Why I ship certain pairings? The yaoi has me in a chokehold and it won’t let me go, I unfortunately have no choice but to be obsessed with them until they fade away from my mind and get replaced by a new dumb thing I like
In regards to how much hate I’ve received for it, not much, I very rarely talk about any of my pairings (toxic or not) in spaces where I risk facing hate for them
Most of my ships are more than likely not considered problematic in the way that you mean by this, but I wanted to share anyway

From what I know it started in the Star Trek fandom around the 1960s to differentiate between platonic and ship fanfiction, (ex: Kirk & Spock would be platonic, and Kirk/Spock would be romantic, like AO3 tags) and it stuck, so new terms started being made around that word, and “slash” became the standard way to refer to gay shipping
