457 is the slash ship between Hwang In-ho and Seong Gi-hun from the Squid Game fandom.

Canon[]

Season 1[]

Gi-hun learned about the Squid Game through an invitation from the Recruiter/The Salesman. He accepted the offer to join the Squid Game in hopes of winning a large sum of money to pay off his substantial debts and his mother’s hospital bills, regain custody of his daughter, and ensure a better life for himself and his family. Throughout the games, as he witnessed the increasingly brutal nature of the challenges and the participants' growing despair, Gi-hun gradually lost his desire to win money and instead focused solely on surviving. Meanwhile, In-ho (known as the Front Man) monitored Gi-hun's progress through the games via screens, enjoying jazz music and sipping whisky throughout the events.

The Front Man later reappears alongside the VIPs in an observation deck, overseeing the final game between Seong Gi-hun and Cho Sang-woo. When asked about the final game, the Front man explains to the VIPs the rules of Squid Game. Once the final game is concluded and Gi-hun is the champion, The Front Man and the VIPs disappear from the observation deck. Following Seong Gi-hun's victory, In-ho escorts a bound and blindfolded Gi-hun in a limousine, being transported by a large ship back towards the mainland. The Front Man congratulates Gi-hun on his victory, but a scarred Gi-hun ignores the compliments and instead questions In-ho about why they created the games. In-ho compares the Squid games to that of horse-race gambling, only with human participants as their horses. When Gi-hun questions the identity of who he is talking to, In-ho suggests that Gi-hun should just view the whole game as nothing more than just a dream, and for him, it wasn't a bad one. However, Gi-hun is persistent and continues to ask "Who are you?" In-ho simply remains silent as he puts on his mask and the limo is filled with a sedative gas that renders Gi-hun unconscious. Once on the mainland, Gi-hun is dumped out of the limousine with his prize, a gold debit card with the promised 45.6 billion won.

One year later, Gi-hun was about to board a plane to reunite with his daughter when he discovered a new game was being prepared after seeing the same man, who had manipulated him trying to do the same to another person. Not wanting anyone else to suffer as he and the previous players did, he makes a call to threaten stopping the games. The Front Man warned him not to have any reckless ideas and advised him to board the plane for his own good. However, Gi-hun chose to forgo the flight, determined to find a way to stop the game.

Season 2[]

Following the address on the card Seong received from the Recruiter/The Salesman. Woo-seok, Jun-ho, and Gi-hun arrive at a party, where a pink lair leads Seong to a limousine. In there, Gi-hun and the Front Man converse without facing each other directly. Gi-hun requests that he end the Squid Game once and for all, but when the Front Man insists that the game will not end unless the world changes, Seong asks to return to the game, encouraging the Front Man to allow him, sharing that he believes the VIPs would love to see a former contestant return. Then filled the limo with sedative gas, causing him to fall asleep again.

After Gi-hun wakes up and reenters as a contestant in the 36th Squid Game. He tries to warn the players during the first game, "Red Light, Green Light", to help everyone survive. Fearing that Gi-hun will ruin the games, In-ho uses his anonymous identity to play the games as Oh Young-il, Player 001, and presses the O button to continue the game.

Gi-hun stayed up all night to watch over the revolt. In-ho came over to talk and shared a story about why he joined the game. He revealed to Gi-hun that his pregnant wife was ill and needed a liver transplant. This made Gi-hun sympathize with him and trust him more because his story was very believable and it was the truth (it occurred during 2015, In-ho simply switched past tense to present tense to make Gi-hun believe that his wife was currently dying). In the "Six-Legged Pentathlon" game, Gi-hun and In-ho cheered and rejoiced together when the other team crossed the finish line. Then, they teamed up and were the last team winning the game. In the third game "Mingle", all players must form a team according to the number announced and displayed on the large screen and enter one of the many rooms together; failing to do so results in death. In the first round, the number called out is 10, Gi-hun and In-ho form a team with others and enter a room. At that moment, the others are eliminated and shot. Gi-hun anxiously looks outside, while In-ho looks at him. In the second round when 4 players are needed, Gi-hun decides he's going to go, but In-ho beats him to it and tells them he'll instead find a team. After the round ends, Gi-hun with his team reunite with In-ho again. When the amount of players needed is called out to be 3, the two take Geum-ja with them as she was left alone without her son. They were also together in the forth round when they needed 6 players. The two survived Mingle successfully.

After a scuffle in the bathroom, a fight breaks out among the contestants hoping to win the prize. Gi-hun leads his group to survive the massacre and later organizes an armed rebellion with the guards' weapons. In-ho, with his excellent combat skills, saves Gi-hun once. As they approach the control room, In-ho suggests finding the control room with Gi-hun, but he refuses and chooses to go with Jung-bae. After they get closer to the control room, In-ho realizes he must end the rebellion and convinces the other two contestants to find another route to the control room while communicating with Gi-hun. After they ambush the guards, In-ho betrays the group and kills the two contestants he recruited to find the control room with him, staging the event over the radio as though they were killed by the guards. In-ho likely enters the control room, changes into the host's outfit, and resumes his role as the host. The plan fails and Gi-hun is confronted by the Front Man, asking him if it was worth it and kills Jung-bae, leaving Gi-hun devastated.

Moments[]

  • In-ho stares at Gi-hun. A lot. Most notable scenes with his stares being,
    • After the first vote when In-ho is smirking at him.
    • During Six-Legged Pentathlon. At any given time.
    • During Mingle after they enter a room with 10 people.
    • During the Special Game when they're under the beds.
  • During their conversation in the airport over the phone, at first In-ho is talking to Gi-hun without his voice modulator but the moment Gi-hun reverts his way back and chooses not to go on the plane, he has the voice modulator on again.
    • This is also supported by the subtitles as when In-ho is speaking the subtitles say it's In-ho talking, but after Gi-hun choses not to go on the plane, the subtitles say the Front Man is talking.
  • During Six-Legged Pentathlon, In-ho saves their team by pulling his leg, which subsequently pulls Gi-huns as well and that causes it to touch the Jegi, ultimately winning them the game.
  • After In-ho has told his joke about Gi-hun's surname that nobody else laughed at except for him, Gi-hun is shortly seen smiling after from the side.
  • Gi-hun looked worried when he and his team were seperated from In-ho during the second round.
    • He was relieved to find out In-ho alive and told him he was worried about him.
  • In-ho had tears in his eyes, as if crying when talking over the radio with Gi-hun during the rebellion.

Fanon[]

Initially a rarepair, the ship quickly gained popularity after Season 2 was released. Shippers would compare the two with Hannigram because of Hwang In-ho's similar features to Hannibal, including his dynamic with Gi-hun that is mirrored with Will Graham. Some shippers would even make Hannibal AUs for the ship. Additionally, fans often compare 457 to In-woo x Hyun-bin from the film Bungee Jumping of Their Own, where Lee Byung-hun, who plays In-ho, also portrayed In-woo. The three-legged race scene in the film is likened to the Six-Legged Pentathlon in Squid Game, featuring moments of cheering and intense stares between the two pairs. These parallels and similarities have inspired fans to headcanon Gi-hun and In-ho as a reincarnated version of In-woo and Hyun-bin.

Popular tropes like "enemies-to-lovers" and "villain x hero" were also the reasons why the ship grew popular, sparking interest to many fans with the potential dynamic that they have unlike the previous season where they had fewer interactions.

Many fans have made jokes about In-ho and how he looks at Gi-hun throughout season 2, saying that In-ho had romantic feelings for Gi-hun and feels jealous when seeing Gi-hun talking to his best friend, Jung-bae.

Since the ship’s growth mostly began on TikTok some established memes were made in the fandom. For preexisting memes it’s common to see comments on TikTok and YouTube use the "I don't like *insert* at all," *insert* says, as *insert* suddenly trips and falls to the ground and multiple pictures of *insert* fall out of *insert* bag. "Wait!" *insert* frantically cries out. "These aren't mine!" prompt, usually inserting the text as a shipper of 457 lying that they don’t like the ship to which the pictures say otherwise or it having In-ho saying this about Gi-hun. The other one is the “He wants that cookie so effing bad”. Meanwhile ones made from the show itself is the infamous meme/statement on how much In-hun is “eyefucking” Gi-hun, another common one is fans making shitposts of In-ho watching the Dalgona Game scene on his big flat screen tv where he's watching Gi-hun desperately licking the cookie with the focus being on how the camera angles and a certain “cake” are focused usually combining the scene of In-ho drinking his drink with “one hand” it's often dubbed as "No wonder why the Dalgona Game was cancelled". Another scenario that people like to imagine is on what happened between the two in the limousine back in Season 1, after Gi-hun fell asleep because of the sleep gas. Since Gi-hun had no problems speaking when he was awake but had to cough out a debit card after he was dropped off on the streets, fans like to assume that it was In-ho who inserted the debit card into his mouth, as they were the only ones in the salon. This promted some interesting works and fanart like this, as well as more jokes about how In-ho is freaky.

A common AU for the ship is the "Gi-hun joins as the second Frontman" this AU usually has Gi-hun agreeing to In-ho's offer of becoming the second Frontman not out of genuine interest but more so because of In-ho letting the others leave the game (or something along those lines usually) only if Gi-hun joins by his side. Gi-hun reluctantly agrees to this or In-ho just forces him to be the second Frontman, later Gi-hun is usually shown wearing a white version of In-ho's Frontman outfit, or it’s also just presented as your typical classic corrupted/morally gray couple AU. Some even try to include Gi-hun's daughter, Ga-yeong as like a family in this AU as well with it centering on In-ho somehow being able to separate her from her family and bring her back to Korea where he uses her as a way to get Gi-hun to say with him, whichever reason Gi-hun accepts. Again usually showing Gi-hun wearing a white verison of In-ho's Frontman costume while Ga-yeong wears a gray or light gray version of said costume, contrasting with In-ho's black costume. An AU coined by twitter artist, @ShangGuanAfun is the "Gihun as a Pink Guard" AU as this usually depicts Gi-hun working as a guard, with no objections as In-ho often gives Gi-hun a pass on the "you die if you show your face" rule and just overall featuring it as a “evil Gi-hun” au. Another one that is pretty popular on Twitter is the “Jessica Rabbit Gi-hun” AU, coined by twitter artist,@TEAL_DR0P the au features Gi-hun with his red-hair dressed up as Jessica Rabbit along with having bits of her personality, later on In-ho would be seen dressed up as Roger Rabbit, this is AU is not mutually exclusive to 457 as it is also seen in Gihun's Harem/Red Flag Magnet/Sanginhun content.

457 alongside Sangihun and SalesHun are oftentimes compared as a ship to be Gi-hun collecting deranged homicidal freaks. A love triangle between 457 and Sangihun (or sometimes SalesHun instead or alongside it) is common to see be discussed upon. Sometimes JunHun and Junghun is added into the mix. This quickly formed the meme and ship of Gihun’s Harem.

The ship is usually commonly referred to as 5 names. Giho, Ginho, FrontHun, Inhun and 457. 457 and Inhun being the most used out of the five specifically Inhun is used the most for the sake of tagging as with 457 it's most used as an name to call the ship as, so it's common to find shippers refer to the ship as 457 in any social media platform along on Youtube even if they tagged it as Inhun.

On AO3, the ship currently has 1.7K+ works, making it the most written ship in the Squid Game fandom. It is mostly rivaled by Sangihun.

Trivia[]

  • In-ho and Gi-hun are both previous winners of the Squid Game, with In-ho winning in the 28th game and Gi-hun in the 33rd game.
  • In-ho and Gi-hun are the “first” and last player.
  • Ordering In-ho's and Gi-hun's numbers, 132 (In-ho's previous number in 2015) and 456, will result in 123456.
  • Both In-ho and Gi-hun experienced the loss of someone they deeply loved during or after their participation in the Squid Game, being unable to save them in time. For Gi-hun, it was his mother, and for In-ho, it was his wife.
  • In-ho went back to the Squid Game with the intent to enlighten Gi-hun, aiming to change his perspective on the world and humanity.[1]
  • They both have a moment in the show where they don't drink the regular milk offered to them, specifically In-ho simply says he doesn't drink milk while Gi-hun says he can't drink it because he cannot digest regular milk.
  • Gi-hun is known as stubborn, determined, and reckless which ironically is the same traits that In-ho's wife had.
  • Lee Jung-jae (Gi-hun's actor) and Hwang Dong-hyuk (creator of Squid Game) revealed that they have seen fan edits of 457 while reacting to fan-made videos of Squid Game.[2][3]
  • Hwang Dong-hyuk, while watching a fan edit of 457, remarked that it “almost feels like a slight gaze of love.”[4]
  • Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he once sent a shipping fan edit to Lee Byung-hun, who plays In-ho, and Lee was reportedly shocked by it.
  • The official Netflix Twitter account tweeted an image of Gi-hun and In-ho looking at each other, with the official Squid Game account retweeting it.[5]
  • The creative decision to bring In-ho into the game in Season 2 was driven by the fact that Gi-hun only recognizes his voice, not his face.[6]
  • Lee Byung-hun, the actor who portrays In-ho in Squid Game, has shared that In-ho feels a sense of reflection and sees a part of himself in Gi-hun. He believes that, perhaps unknowingly, a small part of In-ho hopes that Gi-hun’s thoughts and ideals are correct, rooting for him in a way.[7][8]
  • Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, thinks that In-ho harbors a strange inferiority complex or sense of defeat when he sees Gi-hun. He also suspects that In-ho holds a bit of respect for Gi-hun.[6]
  • The creator of Squid Game also believes the main storyline of Season 2, and continuing into Season 3, is the clash between In-ho and Gi-hun.[9]
  • The official Squid Game Netflix account on Tiktok has posted snippets of Season 3 under which a comment has stated, referring to a snippet of Gi-hun being handcuffed, "OMGGGG THEY GETTING FREAKKKKY". They replied with, "😏".[10]
  • There is a Yahoo article talking about the ship.[11]
  • Gi-hun and In-ho are the only Squid Game characters who have appeared in all 16 episodes of the show (combining both seasons) so far, making them the two main and most important characters of the series. While in Season 1 (and overall) In-ho acts as the main antagonist and Gi-hun as the main protagonist, in Season 2, In-ho for most of the time takes the role of the deuteragonist, working side by side with Gi-hun, although with hidden intentions.
