89 is the non-binary ship between Eight and Nine from the Battle for Dream Island fandom.

Canon[]

When Eight mentions that Six has been spinning around the sky screaming for months, Four thinks that Nine will have a plan to help them. Eight doesn't understand why they need to involve more people and is confused when Nine enters the scene. Though, when Nine introduces themself to Eight, he wonders if they know anything about getting Six down from the sky. After being interrupted by Seven, Nine comes up with a plan to use. With nothing briefly happening afterwards, Nine asks for Eight to wait for a scene transition when he gets confused again. Four, X, Eight, and Nine all stand on Seven to form a stack so Four can grab Six. After Four catches them, Seven pushes the other numbers off of his head.

When it's Nine's turn to be in the sub count, they ask Six a favor to help them kick Eight out of it. Six explains to Nine that they were able to kick Seven out because of them being light, while Eight is much heavier and harder to kick. The two brainstorm of how to kick Eight out, getting a machine from X that will help them. After getting a stone boot from it, Nine and Six approach Eight in the sub count and warn him of his incoming demise. However, Eight is unfazed by their threats and the boot and willingly gives up his spot for Nine. As Nine is confused about not needing to kick him out, Eight tells them he knows how numbers work and gives the spotlight to Nine. Nine is saddened that their plan with Six was useless and wonders how else they could've spent the time it took to make the boot.

While playing a game of cards, Eight overhears Nine groaning in the sub count and asks Five what their issue is. Nine complains about having to stand in place for a long period of time, making Eight suggest that they should be let go while Five insists that they must finish their time in the sub count. Eight still doesn't understand and gets into a disagreement with Five about whether Nine really must continue staying in place. Later when Eight doesn't recognize who Ten is, Seven, Six, and Nine explain to him how Ten has always helped them with problems in the past.

After Six and Nine take the place of Fifteen, the numbers think that they are the real deal and Eight welcomes them back. As Eight asks if Six and Nine are with them, Fifteen says nervously lies that they ate them, although the numbers don't seem to mind. Two days later, Eight watches Fifteen grows tense and splits up into Nine and Six. He and Ten end up having to break up a fight between the two. Nine then approaches Eight and asks him and Seven to take their place instead since the two add up to fifteen. Eight is unsure of what to say and Seven declines, leading the numbers to argue over who should be in the sub count as Fifteen.

Eight and Nine play a game of Jenga with Five, Six, and Ten shortly before Seven joins them. Later on when Fourteen, disguised as Seven, plays pranks on each of the numbers, he watches Eight and Nine playing cards. Eight and Nine pick up cards of themselves labeled with insults, causing Fourteen to laugh on the floor from this prank.

Fanon[]

89 is fairly rare within shipping for the algebralians. Them developing an early dynamic compared to some of the other ships within the numbers boosted its recognition as a ship. Video edits mainly capture how shippers see them, gaining fans on platforms such as TikTok and Twitter. Outside of the ship, the two are more often grouped together in larger fan art with the algebralians. Their more popular pairings such as 96 and 810 tend to get shippers to overlook the pairing.
