- Aether's mind – “She beat them in a duel. So what? There's no reason to be this terrified. Citlali is someone worthy of love and respect.”
- Citlali – “Hey! You can't just... say whatever you want just because it's in your head. [Aether becomes upset]
I'm Granny Itztli — a mere mention of my name, and kids burst into tears. Love and respect? Heh, no one has the guts for that.” - Aether's mind – “[Aether smiles] Well, I do...”
- Citlali – “[Flushed] Wha— You know what, forget about you duty. We really need to fix this mind-reading situation!”

Archon Quest: Chapter V[]
Act III: Beyond the Smoke and Mirrors[]
It all begins when, seeing the warrior potential that Aether has, he decides to ask Xilonen to forge an ancient name for him. Xilonen is unsure if that would be the way forward, so she decides they should consult with Citlali, an expert on all things Night Kingdom and Wayob, though she points out that she's often busy, holed up in her room and obtaining an audience with her was hard.
At this point, Paimon already imagines that Citlali must be a grandmother as she would normally look: much older like other persons such as Madame Ping.
However, two days later, Aether and Paimon return to Xilonen's workshop, who tells them that she did not respond to the letter. However, she might be at the Stadium of the Sacred Flame, though she is not there either. This prompts Paimon to complain about her age just as she actually arrives and scares her. Xilonen apologizes to the Traveler and Paimon for not telling them that Citlali looks much younger than her title suggested, though Citlali herself was also unsure as to how to approach them without making it awkward as she was the last to arrive. Upon learning Mavuika's plan, Citlali decides to examine Aether's past by simply holding his hand. She agrees with Mavuika's plan though she states that the final decision would be from the Lord of the Night. As it is currently in slumber, Aether and Citlali agree with a deal that Aether would track Ororon while Citlali would get the materials for the rite to awake the Lord of the Night.
It turns out that a witness saw Ororon talking to the Fatui and told Citlali about it. She, furious, decides to find Ororon at once and asks the Traveler for help to proceed. In the process, Citlali casts a spell on Aether that allows him to see traces of Phlogiston, something that normal people cannot see. However, the spell has a side effect that by just thinking, one person's thoughts would be mentally heard by the other and thus Aether and Paimon heard Citlali's thoughts. The search leads to the trail splitting into two, so Citlali and Aether decide to split up to search for Ororon. The trail that Aether follows ends, although this causes Aether to fall unconscious, being transported to the Realm of Night. There, it seems that he found Ororon, but with Capitano. Ororon tells the Traveler about the Fatui's plans in Natlan, but asks him not to tell any of this to Citlali. This perception ends when the Traveler wakes up, to the news that Citlali managed to find Ororon's true whereabouts in one of the Fatui camps.
After finishing off the Fatui, Citlali immediately begins to scold Ororon as if they were a mother and son. There, it is revealed that Ororon considers Citlali to be a real grandmother, due to the fact that she raised him. Ororon, upon seeing Aether and Citlali together addresing to him, begins to call them both grandparents, driving Paimon mad at the shock that Ororon began to consider Aether as his grandfather. By Ororon's estimation, Aether is probably hundreds of years old; roughly the same age as Citlali and he has already befriended her and therefore, Aether is Ororon's grandfather.
Later, when Aether was witnessing Capitano's true plan that he wants to carry out with Ororon about "saving Natlan"... The latter sensed that someone was coming, so Capitano quickly disappeared without a trace. However, even though Capitano had erased all trace of himself, he was unable to dissuade Citlali's attention, so she as always scolded Ororon as hard as she could, demanding explanations about him colluding with the Fatui. Ororon decides to leave, not being able to bear Citlali's constant scolding.
Citlali suggests Aether that they talk over a meal, and they head to the Weary Inn. While Aether is enjoying a healthy meal, Citlali prefers to consume alcoholic beverages until she becomes drunk. But she became so drunk that she fell asleep on the same table, drawing the attention of Chanca in the process, who was surprised that Citlali became friends with outlanders like Aether. The side effects of the spell lingered and so Aether and Paimon continued to mentally hear Citlali's true thoughts the entire time she was drunk.
When Citlali finally sobers up (at least partly), she asks them to follow her to a secluded spot in the stadium for a casual conversation. She expresses her true feelings about her life with his "grandson" Ororon and worries about him and she eventually talks about a rite that would sacrifice Ororon, but it failed and Ororon escaped with life.
The next day, Aether is suddenly awakened by the commotion at the inn, where Citlali says that the Abyss has launched an attack on Natlan on a national scale. Hours later after fighting the abyss, Aether meets Citlali again, this time with a gem that reveals Ororon's past. After the memory is over, Citlali is angered again, but she quickly is up to the task.
Act IV: The Rainbow Destined to Burn[]
Because the monsters of the Abyss are constantly attacking the entire Natlan region, Mavuika gathers all the heroes, including Aether and Citlali, and assigns them to different points to defend. While Aether would travel across the nation to help defend the people in danger, Citlali would return to her tribe to do her thing. However, the Abyss seems to be about to consume the entire Natlan region with monsters and when everything seemed lost, Mavuika decides to regain her power and use it massively to destroy all the portals and cores of the Abyss and in the end, deal a heavy blow to the source of the Abyss that was in the sky. At the end of the war against the Abyss, everyone celebrates their victory. Citlali has a premonition that at some point, Mavuika will die in her final fight against the Abyss and tells Aether about it.
It is not yet known what further lies ahead for Aether and Citlali's relationship before he leaves for Snezhnaya.
Iktomi Spiritseeking Scrolls[]
Volume I: Night-Wind Letter[]
Aether and Paimon meet up with Ororon, who asks Aether for help to distract Citlali. He states Aether was the first person he thought of who could deal with her, believing there is something unique about him since Citlali herself treated him like someone special. To further support his claim, Ororon tells Aether "If I had a woven scroll that listed the forty people who can deal with Granny Citlali, your name would be at the top of that list." When asked by Paimon, he says the other thirty-nine would also all be Aether. After Aether agrees to the plan, Ororon gives him the instructions to ask Citlali to read light novels together as a distraction.
Following Ororon to a cave where Citlali was standing, the three discover she is no longer there. Aether sees this as an opportunity for Ororon to freely do what he was planning to. However, the latter feels Citlali wouldn't let him get away so easily, and comes to the conclusion she placed a trap. Ororon then explains he is trying to rescue someone, and urge Aether and Paimon to take a look inside the cave. He assumingly assures Aether Citlali's traps won't do anything to him once they realize who he is.
Inside the cave, Aether and Paimon see someone sitting on the ground unconscious. They decide to call Ororon inside to figure what is happening. Going back outside to find him, they witness Citlali scolding him for trying to do something behind her back. Aether waves at Citlali, much to her shock that he and Paimon have arrived. In her mind, she panics about Aether seeing her yell at Ororon.

- “Granny is actually a very straightforward person. She wears her emotions on her sleeve, you know? It's hard for her to hide what she's feeling. You're the same age as her, right? Or... are you even older? Sorry, I shouldn't ask. That was probably rude... But, if I'm right, maybe you could spend more time together. Granny's been surrounded by people younger than her for a long time, and she's probably had enough. I know she'll be happy to see you.”
- — Ororon about Aether and Citlali's relationship, in his "About Citlali" voiceline.
- “You annoy me too sometimes.
But... I hope you stick around a little longer.” - — Citlali to Aether in Character Teaser - "Citlali: Her Colors"
Fanon[]
Few people started shipping Aether with Citlali before version 5.1 as the girl was a young looking girl, who had the potential to be an alternative to Mualani and her ship, Mualaether. However, when it was revealed that Citlali is actually a young looking grandmother, some fans were discouraged from pairing them together due to the idea that a young boy does not mesh well with an elderly person. Despite this, Citlali is the second female character to have interacted the most with Aether, just behind Mualani, and later, Ororon "pairs" them together as grandparents, causing some fans to pick up this ship again. With Ororon having his own opinion on Aether and Citlali, there are some fans who were more encouraged to pair them together, as Aether tends to be considered somewhat similar to Citlali in the sense that he also has a young appearance despite being hundreds or even thousands of years old. Because of this, shippers have been drawn in by the idea of Citlali finally being able to become attached to someone without worrying about outliving them. Some fans even compare this ship with Aezan, as Faruzan is similar to Citlali.
A number of players note and believe Citlali blushes around Aether in a few cutscenes, as well as her being more intimate with the latter than Lumine if she was the chosen Traveler.
Still, these factors aren't enough to achieve decent popularity, as all of Aether's het ships in the nation of Natlan are too unpopular, as Aether's most popular ships are mostly with boys like Kinich and even Capitano, similar to Xiao. Also, like Mualani, Citlali doesn't use a light sword despite being a seemingly teenage-sized girl (regardless of her grandmotherly personality), so this makes her even more unpopular compared to the light sword-wielding girls that Aether is popularly shipped with in Aether's Swordgirl Harem (like Keqing, Ayaka, Nilou, and Furina).
