I didn't know you cared so much about me. Does that mean that you still need my power? But given the way I am now... there's a chance I won't be able to give you everything you need. Hmm? All you really care about is... me? In that case, then let us act out our future journey together!

Archon Quest[]

Chapter IV: Act I - Prelude of Blancheur and Noirceur[]

Furina welcoming the traveler

Furina welcoming Aether to Fontaine.

Furina and Aether both meet one another during the fourth major Archon quest chapter, when the latter arrives at the nation of Fontaine along with Paimon, his traveling companion. This is the fifth nation that they have visited thus far, after Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, and Sumeru. Because of this, Furina has long heard of Aether's previous experiences and deeds in various other nations, and welcomes him to the nation of Hydro, becoming the only archon so far who has done so. It can be seen that Furina is a very flamboyant and confident archon with a bold and bratty personality, as she even challenges Aether to an "epic duel", who prepares for battle despite having just arrived in Fontaine. Furina is extremely surprised that Aether was ready to fight her, presumably because nobody had even dared to retaliate her actions in the past, as she becomes a little nervous and acknowledges his bravery by saying: "Few have the courage to draw their sword against a god. He is obviously a true warrior", before clarifying that the duel that she wanted to face off against him in was in court, as she claims that they have broken one of Fontaine's laws, and orders their arrest. Unbeknownst to everyone, however, Lyney (a magician that Aether and Paimon met almost immediately after arriving in Fontaine), pulls off a clever trick which completely negates the charges that Furina had against the traveler, as she departs not long afterwards. This would be the first encounter between the two, and definitely not the last.

Furina at the Opera Epiclese

After spending some time with Lyney, along with his siblings Lynette and Freminet who inform them of their upcoming magic show, Aether and Paimon head off to the Opera Epiclese to go watch their performance, when they run into Neuvillette, the Chief Justice and Iudex of Fontaine. It turned out that he was also there to witness Lyney's magic show, as he introduced himself before informing Aether that Furina was also present to watch the performance, and that she was sitting on her seat from above, striking a pose to get his attention and have an "elegant and impressive" first impression. As Aether took notice of Furina, she giggled and had a satisfied look on her face, as everyone else then slowly entered the opera house one by one, waiting for the show to begin. Shortly after, Lyney would make his way onto the stage and introduce himself as the "star of today's show", along with Lynette as his assistant, which marked the beginning of the performance. Furina, Aether, and the rest of the crowd would then watch closely as Lyney impressed everyone by making Lynette seemingly disappear out of nowhere inside a water tank, before coming back onto the stage. Everything seemed to be going well, until the final act went horribly wrong, when the water tank which was hanging above fell onto a box that was supposed to contain a random audience member as part of a "box swap" act, killing whoever was in it instantly. This shocked everyone, including Lyney himself, as clearly something terribly wrong had just happened.

Furina accuses Lyney

Furina accusing Lyney of being the main suspect.

After some investigations, it was confirmed that the person who was killed from the falling box was one of Lyney's assistants, not the random audience member that was supposed to be inside it, who was now missing from the audience completely. Furina connected the dots with what had just happened along with a current ongoing series of disappearance cases relating to young women to determine that Lyney was now the main suspect of this case, as it was only during his magic show that the audience member had vanished from thin air. However, Aether trusts Lyney and does not think that he was the person behind all this, as he was in the box on the stage the entire time, meaning that there was no way that he could have tampered with any of the equipment. He decides to become Lyney's attorney in his trial in order to help prove that he is innocent, as Furina can't help but wait for the trial to begin, so that she can finally claim her "victory" against her duel with the traveler, once and for all. As the Chief Justice, Neuvillette schedules the hearing to begin in exactly one day, as Aether and Paimon begin to investigate the scene of the incident.

Aether and Furina in court

The next day, Lyney's trial begins as along with the help of Aether as his attorney, he will attempt and prove his innocence from the death of his assistant during his magic show, as well as his involvement with the serial disappearance cases of young women. Furina starts off by informing everyone in the opera house that Lyney and Lynette are actually members of the House of the Hearth, an orphanage which is led by Arlecchino, one of the eleven Fatui harbingers. This is shocking news for everyone, as not only was Aether unaware of the fact that Lyney and Lynette were from the Fatui, but he himself has clashed with them several times in the past. In fact, the information was so surprising, that he requested a brief adjournment in order to discuss some things with the two of them. Furina seems to be surprised that Aether would still even consider supporting Lyney after what has just been revealed, but she remains confident and tells the audience to "let the joy of victory steep for a little while longer." During the discussion with Lyney and Lynette, Aether listens to everything that they have to say, and comes to the conclusion that despite being from the Fatui, there was no possible way that they could have been responsible for the murder that occurred on the stage. Once the trial resumes, both Aether and Furina let out several key points and arguments to the case, however in the end, with the help of the Spina di Rosula, an organization that dedicates their time to helping people and investigating matters, Lyney is proven innocent and Furina admits defeat, though she is clearly unhappy as she wasn't even left with a bit of dignity.

Aether and Friends riends Departing Photo Shoot

Aether and his friends before departing for Natlan

When Aether is about to leave Fontaine and depart for Natlan, Charlotte appears and takes a photo of them, having heard that they were about to depart. Navia, Clorinde and Furina also arrive to bid farewell to Aether and hoping that their journey in Natlan would be uneventful, though Furina is the one who gives Aether some details about Natlan. Charlotte prepares her Kamera to take a final photo of Aether and Furina with other female companions. After the photo shoot, the Traveler and Paimon depart for Natlan. This is the Aether and Furina's last meeting in the meantime.

Animula Chioragi Chapter: Furina's Story Quest[]

Act I - The Little Oceanid[]

It starts off with Aether and Paimon looking for a commission to finish in the Adventurer's Guild. They later find out about a musical that's in need of a replacement actress as the original cast member ran into some issues, and cannot perform the role. Unfortunately, they can't pay for a replacement actress as the troupe is experiencing financial difficulties. Talking to Lauwick, a member of the troupe, Aether and Paimon suggests to ask Furina to be the replacement. After deciding over it, they were about to look for Furina, but she was said to have moved out from the Palais Mermonia. Thankfully, Katheryne went there in time to inform them about what Furina's address is.

Aether and Paimon now went to where she lives. Paimon starts doubting whether Katheryne gave them the correct address, until Furina walks in to warn Paimon about common courtesy. She turned out to be on a shopping trip, buying tons of macaroni as she ran out of it. Furina thought they were just there to ogle at her fall from grace, and she wasn't taking guests at that time, so she tried to shoo them off.

Aether now tries to ask Furina for her help, explaining the troupe's plans for their final performance. Unfortunately, Furina declined their casting request due to present circumstances. She already made a decision to retire from the stage, as playing the role of being the Hydro Archon left an indelible mark on her. Paimon insists, saying it's just a one-off part to fill in for someone who's experiencing sickness. But then, Furina makes it clear to the both of them that she will no longer perform. Paimon says that they'll figure out a different plan instead, and Furina says her goodbyes to them both as she needs to take a rest now.

Roses and Muskets[]

Musketeer Pictures

Aether and Furina as part of the Musketeer Pictures crew.

Aether is involved in a production of a new Fontaine film, so Chiori and Xavier, a film producer, decides that they go to Furina's house after finishing matters with the Kamisato siblings. Furina says that she stayed up late at night reading novels and that's why she slept until the afternoon of the next day. Prior to this, Aether had already gotten Furina's favorite dessert, the Fontinalia Mousse, and decides to have Xavier give it to her. Xavier and Paimon revealed that he would work on the new adapted "Two Musketeers" film with Aether as the Kamera operator and Furina as the director. At first, Furina doubts Aether's abilities with the Kamera, but she is impressed after seeing Aether filming in action.

Later, arriving at what would be the scene of the movie, Furina, still sleepy, finds Aether again at a meeting with Chiori, Ayaka, Yoimiya and Chevreuse, asking for coffee, so Yoimiya and the others decide to go to bring you one. While waiting for coffee, Furina has a talk with Aether about Yoimiya's secret. After everyone got together, they found their film company "Musketeer Pictures" and began working on the film.

At the end of the movie, Xavier and the others gather to take a photo as a reminder that they once worked together. In the photo, Furina is posing with the trophy and is next to Aether, in the center. Finally, Aether overhears Xavier wanting to take more photos of Furina and leaves them for the moment to continue his adventures through the Teyvat region.

Whirling Waltz[]

Aether arrives with Kinich at the Chevalmarine Festival by chance, and while they're talking, Lépine-Pauline and Navia appear. They both tell Aether about the festival. Navia asks Aether to help her organize it properly, as it has a very high popularity potential and that Furina is the mastermind behind it and if Aether helps, they will distribute the Mora earned, with 60% being Furina's personal earnings. From then on, Aether became the head of the theme park for the duration of the Chevalmarine Festival.

When the Chevalmarine Festival became very popular in Fontaine, Furina herself appears in person, asking Aether to help her making a poll to the customers, before offering herself to be an advisor. Escoffier served Furina a cake while the three talked. Aether and Paimon play along, making a few gestures to make it seem like they're introducing the chef to Furina. When Aether finishes his work, he meets with Escoffier and Furina to discuss a fun topic about a supposedly new Escoffier's cake with pepper. Navia shows up to join in. As a souvenir, Navia gives Aether a map of the park where the festival took place, featuring portraits of Aether, Furina and other contributing characters. Furina grants Aether the privilege to add a moustache to her portrait.

Fanon[]

Fandom[]

Aerina is a generally popular ship in the fandom and the direct competitor against other ships of Aether and Furina like Xiaother, Ayather, Neuvifuri and Arlefuri. Due to the official scriptwriters' tendency to use suggestive imagery in depicting the emotional relationship between Aether and Furina, it is pretty easy for people to feel the inner emotional relationship between the two when reading the plot, which is why the ship rose to popularity. There are also many similarities in the experiences between Aether and Furina, one example being that the two have each gone through their own journey for around 500 years, with Aether trying to find his long lost sibling, Lumine, and Furina playing the role as the Hydro Archon to save the entire nation of Fontaine from the prophecy. They have both suffered for a huge amount of time, so it makes sense that many artists will often depict the two of them comforting one another, in a wholesome way.

Oftentimes, shippers will also incorporate elements of Furina's unique personality into their artworks, such as her two main sides of being confident and bold, but also considerate and thoughtful. Most people generally find their relationship to be long and developing, similar to the Neuvifuri ship, as Aether spends his time in Fontaine getting to know Furina better.

Aerina Ahoge

Art by MaTrex

One subtle thing which some people may not know about that makes Aerina such a popular ship is their matching ahoges. In Anime and Manga, Ahoge (アホゲ in Japanese, translating to the literal words "foolish hair") refers to a long and noticeable strand of hair that sticks out in a different direction from the rest of a character's hair. It is usually added to give cuteness to a character and indicates some specific traits that they may have, and sometimes may appear to defy gravity and other laws of physics. In the case of Aether and Furina, it was discovered that when facing each other, their ahoges would line up to match a heart shape,[1] which prompted many artists to ship the two together and create artworks that included the heart shaped ahoge, with one example being visible to the right. This made the ship the most popular Aether's het ship in Fontaine, overwhelming Aevia on Aether's side, and Neuvifuri on Furina's, and many of the top posts in both the Aether and Furina subreddits include artworks of the two together as a ship.[2]

Another reason for it's popularity is also because Furina is one of the most popular female characters in the entire Genshin Impact cast and Aether generally being considered as the canon main character for the game due to him frequently appearing in the official version trailers for Genshin Impact, as well as the story teaser: We Will Be Reunited. Even some fans tend to compare it with CaeFly, the male main character, aka Caelus' most popular hetero ship from Honkai Star Rail, due to how Caelus/Firefly and Aether/Furina are similarly in a Dancer/Warrior archetype, not to mention that Furina and Harmony Caelus wear their respective French hats.

Due to Furina using a sword in game, she became a new member of Aether's Swordgirl Harem, making her rival Keqing, Kamisato Ayaka and Nilou and their respective ships with Aether: Aeqing, Ayather and Aelou.

There is currently extensive debate about whether Aerina is considered to be another Traveler ship with an Archon or not. (Due to Furina being a human species created by Focalors, the late Hydro Archon of Fontaine and many fans debate whether Furina herself is considered to be an Archon or is just a pure human form of Focalors.) It is worth mentioning that all the Archons, except those of Mondstadt and Liyue, are female. Due to HoYoverse frequently portraying Furina with other Archons in official art like the ones specialized for an anniversary patch, this would make Aerina a relatively popular "Traveler x Archon" ship alongside Venther and ZhongLumi.

Gameplay[]

In terms of gameplay, META players consider Aether and Furina to have a mildly decent synergy. Despite her being the most used character in the entire Genshin Impact cast in most difficult challenges like the Spiral Abyss and Imaginarium Theater, some of Aether's available elements can't be favored by Furina. She can't buff Elemental Mastery when Aether uses his Anemo or Dendro elements in any Transformative Reactions; while both can also cause Hydro-Crystallize to create a shield to protect themselves, Aether's Geo element cannot buff Furina's Elemental Skill damage due to her not being a Geo element. And in case of Electro Aether, they can't make a decent Electro-Charged damage against their enemies and this reaction is not popular.

Still, Furina compenses this with the high damage her pets can deal to enemies with her Elemental Skill.

Their best team that the fans could make is the Hyperbloom team with Dendro Aether, Furina, Kuki Shinobu and Kokomi. However, META players consider that Furina can't perform well making the Bloom reaction with Aether due to her lightly slow sub-DPS rate than Xingqiu and Yelan and therefore, they recommend replacing Dendro Aether with Nahida and replacing Furina with Xingqiu or mostly Yelan.

Also, players that can't afford or get Neuvillette, some of them team up Hydro Aether with Furina in a team that would normally be Neuvillette Hypercarry. It's because Hydro Aether's Elemental Skill mimics Neuvillette's powerful Torrent but with much lower performance. It can be buffed by Furina's Elemental Burst and to further increase the damage, Kazuha and Xilonen are the most chosen ones, because of them reducing the enemies' Hydro Res and Xilonen healing periodically to compense Furina's HP Draining Effect. However, Hydro Aether's low damage scaling and his single target nature makes this team only effective against Single-but-Powerful Bosses and not against groups of small enemies. Not to mention that Hydro Aether requires very much investment to become at least decent.

These Aerina teams are currently rivaled by other Aether ship related teams like the Aeqing Aggravate Team and Nilother Bloom Team.

These circumstances might change with the release of Pyro and Cryo elements of Aether. Furina shines more in Vape teams and Freeze teams, and she is used more in Vape reactions. For this reason, some fans state that Pyro Aether will have the best synergy with Furina.

Fan-made Organization[]

Due to the popularity of Aerina, fans of the ship have established an organzational account called Aerina Fanclub (aka 空芙同好会) to uniformly post and repost Aerina's global related content every day.

Trivia[]

  • Furina's versatility on many teams, combined with many fans considering the Dendro element to be the best for Aether, makes them two characters that can work together effectively during combat, with the appropriate choice of two other characters on the same team.
    • Aether's Dendro Ultimate Skill (Surgent Manifestation) plants a lotus flower (The Lea Lotus Lamp) that affects enemies within range, damaging them and imbuing them with Dendro. If Furina waters said flower with her Elemental Skill (Salon Solitaire) when she is in Ousia arkje, before someone else does it with some other element, the flower grows larger (Hydro Lotuslight Transfiguration), increasing the range of said flower. In this state, Furina protects Aether's flower from other elements such as Electro and Pyro until it disappears.
    • Aether imbues enemies with Dendro Element in combat with his Elemental Skill (With his sword) and Ultimate Skill (Through the Lotus Flower) while Furina's Elemental Skill, summons bubble water creatures, although many fans prefer the 3 Hall Members that the Ousia Arkje summons, which attack enemies by imbuing them with Hydro, similar to what a Cicin Mage does.
      • If both Dendro (from Aether) and Hydro (from Furina) are imbued on the same enemy, Aether and Furina cause an elemental reaction known as Bloom: they create green seed-like plants known as Dendro Cores, which exlplode dealing damage to nearby enemies after certain time expires. According to most fans, the Dendro Cores are the most versatile ones to use them against enemies, because they make powerful explosions when burned with Pyro element (Burgeon) while they make powerful Sprawling Shots that home into enemies while electrized with Electro element (Hyperbloom). This makes most fans to think that Aether and Furina fit well in Bloom, Burgeon and Hyperbloom teams, despite Furina being uncapable of buffing Bloom with her Ultimate Skill (Let the People Rejoice), which is used to buff the Main DPS instead.
  • Aether and Furina’s striking color palettes (Yellow & Blue) parallels one another when inverted.
KakaoTalk Aerina
  • In an official collaboration of Genshin Impact and KakaoTalk in Korea[4], core examples of the Arlecchino theme show example contacts, two of them being Aether and Furina. However, they can be considered matching as the pictures used for them are the ones in the Version 4.0 illustration.[5]
  • There is an official advertisement of Genshin's Japanese account on Twitter that features Furina exploring with Aether in the first segment. Since the second and third segments feature Kamisato Ayaka and Amber, of which are two characters being shipped primarily to Aether, therefore this implies Aerina is also being catered by HoYoverse.[6]
  • Their names both have five letters in it.
