AiRina is the femslash ship between Rina Tennoji and Ai Miyashita from the Love Live! fandom.
Canon[]
Season 1[]
Ai is Rina's only friend in the beginning. In episode 1, when Yuu and Ayumu asked Rina about the whereabouts of the School Idol Club, Ai joined them and answered on Rina's behalf.
In episode 2, Ai and Rina are seen feeding a stray cat named Hanpen, discussing whether one of them can take the cat home or not. In episode 3, they protected Hanpen when Setsuna attempted to expel it from the school grounds, but later congratulated Hanpen together after Setsuna takes Hanpen in as the school's unofficial officer.
In episode 4, the two are seen on a bench while Rina pets Hanpen, discussing joining the school idol club after seeing Setsuna's performance. Later, they showed up to the club room together. Ai does most of the talking for Rina, asking Rina if she's excited in the club, replying with a quiet "Yes". Ai later says she's never seen Rina have this much fun before, and that she's having loads of fun as well. Rina then says she's not very good at expressing herself, showing how much Ai knows about her. After Ai's concert, Rina says she feels fired up.
In episode 6, Rina is first shown making friends with Ai during the beginning of the schoolyear. She is initially intimidated and internally calls Ai scary after suddenly appearing behind her. Ai shows that she's nothing to be afraid of, saying she just wanted to cheer Rina up because she looked down. Ai sees Rina's coupon for "Joypoli", calling it super cool. Rina offers it to Ai asks her to go with her friends, and then Ai tells Rina to go with her. Rina monologues on how Ai was the first person she was able to connect with.
Ai is the first one to help Rina when she wants to change her character for Rina's upcoming performance. Later when Yuu, Ayumu, and Ai go to her house, she tells them that she is thankful for them. Ai pulls her into a hug and promises to make her concert a success.
When Rina is feeling down about not being able to express herself, Ai and the rest of her idol group come to her apartment to make sure she's okay. Rina opens the door for them after Ai pleaded. Ai comes up to Rina, who hides herself in a box, and Rina tells Ai she's sorry for not going to practice. Ai asks her what's wrong, Rina responds by saying she was so embarrassed with herself. She talks about her struggles with making friends in middle school, up until she met Ai. Each of Rina's clubmates then encouraging her, causing Ai to cutting in, hugging her box. With the support from Ai and her friends, she performs the concert.
In episode 8, when Kasumi is at loss on what to do with Shizuku's predicament, Rina encouraged Kasumi to be there for Shizuku, just like Ai was there for her. In episode 13 during the school festival, Rina helped to fix a problem on Ai's stage's equipment, resulted in a hug from Ai when it is fixed. Rina wondered that this is the first time that she is of use for Ai, but Ai just patted her head in response, resulting in Rina showing a blushing face with her board. In the closing performance on the festival, the two are dancing together at one point.
Season 2[]
In episode 4, when Ai prepares herself for DiverDiva's debut performance, Rina hugged Ai and assured her that everything would be okay, resulting in a headpat from Ai.
Nijiyon Animation[]
In Season 2 episode 9, after Rina learning about nonverbal communication from Emma, she tried it on Ai the next day.
In Season 2 episode 13, during Kasumi's "Older Sister Contest", Rina (who has won the earlier "Little Sister Contest" in Season 1 episode 9) choose Ai as the winner, resulting in a hug from Ai.
Moments[]
- The two are practically inseparable during the first half of 1st season, with Ai often does most of the talking for Rina
- Ai often hugged Rina and touched her face, which Rina doesn't mind it at all
- Those two are often seen taking care of Hanpen together
Fanon[]
AiRina sailed as a result of Ai's support of Rina and helping her come out of her shell to make new friends. Popular with Nijigasaki fans, some fans may prefer them platonically instead. The ship is rivaled by KarinAi and RinaMia. On AO3, AiRina is the most written ship for both Ai and Rina. It is also the sixth most written ship in the Love Live! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Doukoukai tag. There are currently 90+ written works.
