AkaAkem is the het/family ship between Shuichi Akai and Akemi Miyano from the Detective Conan fandom.
Canon[]
Manga[]
Five years prior to the start of the series, Shuichi Akai plans to infiltrate the Organization. His mission is to date Akemi Miyano in order to get into contact with her younger sister, Shiho Miyano. Shuichi joins the Organization, but his cover eventually gets blown three years later. When Shuichi reveals he is an FBI Agent to Akemi, she isn't surprised. When Shuichi asks why she never said anything about her being used by him, she hints it's because she genuinely loves hm. Shuichi, who had been dating Jodie Starling during the infiltration, breaks up with Jodie. He had genuinely fallen in love with Akemi.
Akemi planned to escape the organization with her sister. On the day of the bank heist, she sends a text message to Shuichi asking if he would be her real boyfriend after she escapes. There is a P.S. after her message but it isn't revealed to the readers. However, Akemi is unable to escape because Gin killed her, despite her succeeding with the heist. Shuichi keeps her final text message months after her death.
Neither Shuichi nor Akemi were aware of being maternal cousins.
Anime-Only[]
The anime expands a bit on their relationship by showing their first meeting. Shuichi intentionally walks in front of Akemi's car, resulting in her hitting him. Akemi calls for an ambulance and stays by his side until he wakes up. Akemi apologizes to him, but Shuichi isn't angry and asks for her name. Akemi introduces herself and Shuichi introduces himself by his fake name, Dai Moroboshi.
Fanon[]
There are currently 117 works for the romantic tag AkaAkem and 43 works for the platonic tag on AO3. Due to the relationship having started and ended prior to the start of the series, it is not as popular as the rest of the ships for Shuichi Akai.
Controversy[]
Shuichi and Akemi's relationship was first mentioned in Volume 58, which was released on July 18, 2007. Volume 99 was released on April 14, 2021 where it is revealed that Shuichi's mother, Mary Akai, is the older sister of Akemi's mother, Elena Miyano. This reveals that Shuichi and Akemi are maternal cousins.
Fans find this revelation to be controversial due to the two having been in a canon relationship, which would mean that it was incest. In Japan, first cousin marriages are still legal. Still, many fans are put off by cousins being in a relationship, especially since it took Gosho Aoyama over ten years to add it. Many fans considers the familial revelation to be extremely unnecessary due to, despite four years after being revealed to be cousins, it hasn't played any major role in the story. Another ship that has gone through this controversy is KaiShin.
