Akanene is the het ship between Akane Aoi and Nene Yashiro from the Toilet-bound Hanako-kun fandom.
Canon[]
Initially, Akane took in a deep hatred for Nene, albeit temporarily, due to Hanako possessing her body and attempting to kiss Aoi. Akane, thinking that Nene was doing that at will, yelled and dragged her body to the roof, threatening to kill her. When Hanako says that Aoi is actually pretty flat-chested, Akane gets extremely mad, and slaps her, pushing Hanako out of her body and leaving Nene back into hers. Nene then tells him that she wishes to help Aoi in any way she can, and he agrees to help them, and find out her secret. When they, along with Kou and Hanako, spy on Aoi, Akane mentions how he'd always beat boys up who used to force Aoi to go out with them, which leaves Nene terrified.
Akane explains his love for Aoi, to which Nene thinks about how she'd want someone to love her like that. After that, Hanako gets Akane to reveal himself as one of the three Clock Keepers, much to Nene's shock. When Akane goes to get violent with Hanako, Nene stops him and takes them to the infirmary. There, Akane questions Nene and wonders if she's had a pact with Hanako, a fact to which she doesn't deny. When Nene explains what happened to her, Akane mocks her and asks if she's a masochist, swallowing a mermaid scale on purpose. About to continue their conversation, they were interrupted by students who declared that everybody has turned into old people, which Akane says that it was at the hands of Mirai. Nene later goes up to Akane and asks him if he hates supernaturals, and Akane brightly replies with "yes", shocking her. She continues by saying that Hanako may be a little slimy, but not all supernaturals are as bad as he thinks.
In extra pages, Nene asks what Akane does with his watch, and Akane says that he stops Aoi's time, and then claims that he doesn't do anything bad to her, but instead gazes at her the whole 15 minutes. This leaves Nene even more terrified then she was before.
After the severance, Akane and Teru go to Nene's house and invite her on a date. Though, Akane seems tired throughout the date, with eyebags under his eyes. Nene is nervously about to ask Akane about Hanako and Aoi, and Akane tells Nene that he probably knows a general idea of what she knows. Akane mentions that Nene's lifespan expanded, likely sad about how Aoi died in Nene's place. After ordering food, Teru leaves Akane to look after Nene, who just started crying. The two talk and decide to cooperate since they have similar goals. Akane tells Nene that she is someone he can trust.
In the last published chapter (127) Akane told Nene that he was sort of subestimating her, he mentioned that he visioned Nene as a "No brain hopeless romantic" and would always ask himself why Aoi became Nene's friend. But after they passed togheter in the latest chapters, his view towards Nene changed a bit. And he saw how she would do anything to save her friends.
Fanon[]
Akanene isn't a very popular ship, and has a lack of fans throughout the community. It's considered a rarepair and it's overshadowed by ships such as Hananene, Aoinene, Aoikane and Terukane. With Hanako and Aoi being Nene and Akane's main love interests, Akanene can be shipped along with HanaAoi. While Akane and Nene's friendship is appreciated, it only has 15+ romantic works on AO3 and 13+ gen works. There's also a decent amount of fan art for a rarepair.
