AkenoYorii is the familyship between Akeno Tsugikuni and Yoriichi Tsugikuni from the Demon Slayer fandom.
Canon[]
In the Sengoku Era, the birth of twins was seen as a harbinger of misfortune, and the Tsugikuni family faced an unexpected challenge when Akeno Tsugikuni gave birth to not one, but two sons: Yoriichi and Michikatsu. The presence of an unusual mark on Yoriichi's forehead, which was later identified as a Demon Slayer Mark, only intensified the family's distress. Fearing the worst, Yoriichi's father initially decided that the newborn should be put to death. However, Akeno refused to let him do so, intervening and saving Yoriichi's life. Instead, it was decided that Yoriichi would be sent to a monastery when he turned ten.
Akeno was very religious and often prayed to the god of the Sun for there to be no disasters in the world. Akeno also harbored immense love for her children and constantly worried for them. It wasn't stated when, but Akeno began battling an illness that slowly affected her entire body. Yoriichi was able to see through her sickness due to him being born with the Demon Slayer Mark, and was often seen clinging to his mother during his childhood because of her declining health. Yoriichi was constantly supporting Akeno by her left side, where she was most affected. At first, Yoriichi never spoke with his family, leading Akeno to believe he was hard of hearing. Akeno crafted him Hanafuda-charm earrings and prayed to the Sun god, hoping it would cure his deafness.
Akeno wrote her experiences down in a diary, expressing her thoughts until she succumbed to her sickness. The same morning Akeno passed, Yoriichi went to inform Michikatsu about her passing before fleeing. Michikatsu would discover her diary and find out that Yoriichi had known about Akeno's disease the entire time, and that the reason he clung to her was in an attempt to support her. Akeno also wrote that she wanted her husband to live happily with their two sons, and to support her wishes, her husband went looking for Yoriichi but ended up unsuccessful.
Yoriichi wore the Hanafuda earrings his mother made for him for assumably more than 20 years until he met Sumiyoshi, to whom he then gave the earrings. The earrings became a form of symbolism especially within the Kamado family, and were passed down through generations. These earrings eventually came into the possession of Tanjiro Kamado, linking him to Yoriichi's legacy.
Fanon[]
AkenoYorii isn't noticed in the fandom, since Akeno was a minor character in the franchise and because of her being introduced in the manga, particularly a segment that is yet to be animated. Despite Akeno's minor role, she still added a lot to Yoriichi's development, such as her crafting and gifting him Hanafuda earrings, to Yoriichi's constant support towards her when she was experiencing pain on her left side. Akeno and Yoriichi's relationship helped Yoriichi progress as a character. His Hanafuda earrings are an important asset in the story, and Yoriichi's helpfulness towards her made him learn what helping others was like at a young age. It also started Kokushibo's hatred towards him, a major aspect of Kokushibo and Yoriichi's backstory. Fans of the mother-son duo often call Yoriichi a “Mama's Boy,” since he was always seen clinging to his mother and tried his best to assist her when she experienced hardships.
A more popular mother-son relationship is Kyōjurō Rengoku and his mother, Ruka. When Kyōjurō was experiencing his last moments, he was envisioning his mother. However, the relationship isn't as popular as it was when Mugen Train Arc was airing. Mother-son relationships aren't popular in the fandom due to most fans focusing on romantic pairings or sibling relationships, which are more focused on throughout the series. Another reason for the lack of popularity is that most characters' parents are deceased, specifically their mothers, with only one character who's mother is still alive. Yoriichi is among with characters' with deceased mothers, with him being deceased himself.
The duo currently has 2 works on AO3. Despite their limited presence in fan works, those who appreciate their relationship see great depth and significance in it. Fan-made artworks of Akeno typically feature her children, Michikatsu and Yoriichi, with a particular focus on Yoriichi due to him being visibly closer with his mother. Works due to highlight their close bond and the significant impact she had on his life.
