Akian is the het ship between Akito Shinonome and An Shiraishi from the Project SEKAI fandom.

Canon[]

Akito and An are part of the street music group Vivid BAD SQUAD. They were previously competing as two separate groups. They went to the same middle school and currently go to the same high school, Kamiyama High, where they're both second-year students and classmates. They're rivals and often bicker with each other about who's the best between the two, often insulting and teasing one another; though, the two recognize each other's talent. Often, An stops Akito from teasing Kohane too much. Akito is normally annoyed by An's lively attitude. The two of them became immersed in music after witnessing An's father and his group RADders host and perform at the legendary event called RAD WEEKEND. The two are the more passionate duo of their group, striving in hopes of pulling off a performance that is equally hype "in order to surpass that night." The two frequently practice together alongside the rest of their group.

In Vivid BAD SQUAD's Main Story, Akito was immediately interested in asking An to become part of his and Touya's street music unit after being recommended, having seen her perform at her father's café and considering her to be of equal skill and drive. However, upon asking her to join, Akito was disappointed as An had rejected his offer in favor of partnering with Kohane, who she had met a few days prior. Akito felt that An's belief in Kohane would only drag her down due to Kohane's lack of musical experience not matching An's talents, leading him to instead, along with Touya, compete against An.

During An and Kohane's first live show, Mita Kotaro, Akito's friend, deliberately cut off the audio track during their performance to sabotage the two. This caused Kohane to get struck with stage fright, forcing An to cover for her. Despite having not doing it as well as getting upset when the music was cut, Akito took the blame for the incident. He cited that he believed that he and Touya took their music more seriously than An and pointed to Kohane as evidence for it, leading Kohane to run off. With this, An angrily tells Akito that she expected better of him and that she was proven wrong.

Later, after winning back Kohane, the girls are approached by Kotaro, who apologizes then clarifies that Akito wasn't the one who sabotaged their concert. Realizing her mistake, An and Kohane band together to make up with Akito and check on him after his fight with Touya.

Following up them group becoming Vivid BAD SQUAD, it is shown that Akito is one of the first people to usually notice and point it out when something is wrong with An or she is feeling doubtful.

Singing in Sync[]

In Episode 1, Akito instantly asks why An told Kohane that she'll cover for her in the unlikely event that anything goes wrong during their battle event at STAY GOLD. An doesn't understand what Akito means by it and he decides not to bug An more despite his suspicions.

In Episode 3, after Kohane runs out and An laments the fact she failed her and couldn't protect her, Akito immediately calls her out on this, making her realize she doesn't consider Kohane her equal. When Akito then says they need to discuss and make sure they won't fail the same way, he specifically asks An if she was listening. At the end of the event, An then thanks Akito for making her open her eyes to her conflict.

STRAY BAD DOG[]

In this event, An shows her worry for Akito who's been overworking himself immensely.

In Episode 5, after Akito is disheartened by the encounter with Arata. Akito trails off and says he needs to call An after discussing the group’s practice tomorrow. The next day, Akito discusses his plan to enter an event solo, prompting An’s shock. She later adds with a smile that she doesn’t mind, and that solo events can give valuable experience. An asks Akito when he’ll be practicing solo outside of team meet-ups, and he answers that he’ll practice at night. Kohane shows incredulity towards Akito’s plan and Touya offers to help Akito, but he refuses both of them. This leads An to frown and say, “What’s going on here? Something feels really wrong!” After Akito explains he and Touya ran into Arata and lost a battle, An exclaims asking if he’s serious. Afterwards, Akito promises he won’t bother any of the three, and An sighs saying she won’t stop him. Akito thanks her and heads off, and Kohane asks An if she’s sure about this; An smiles, answering that she’s not and how nothing she said would have convinced Akito otherwise. Toya worries and asks An if Akito will be alright, and determined, she explains that Akito might calm down after a bit.

In Episode 6, An and Kohane catch up to Toya who’s attempting to change Akito’s mind. Afterwards, An worries and wonders to herself what’s going on with Akito, and Kohane suggests that An’s father talk to Akito. An frowns and explains they already tried that, and how Akito shrugged off her father’s advice. Toya is shocked that Akito wouldn’t budge even after Ken’s advice, and An wishes they could learn what prompted Akito’s shift in behavior. When the three head to Crase Cafe in the Street SEKAI, they discuss what lies behind Akito’s worries with the VIRTUAL SINGERS. An thanks KAITO for his advice, and the team heads back to real life, with An attempting to dial Akito before Kotaro interrupts. Through their conversation, Kotaro tells the three that people are badmouthing Akito’s talent, leading to An glaring and exclaiming how awful that is. When Toya heads off to the BROWN live house to find Akito who’s performing there, An yells at him to wait so they can head together with Kohane.

An fistbumping Akito

"Let's really sock it to them!" – An fistbumping Akito

In Episode 7 when Akito is reaching his limit and falling further disheartened, he's interrupted by the rest of VBS. An remarks that the event is over but asks Akito if they could crash the party, and Akito widens his eyes in confusion. An asks Akito if he’s still able to sing, and upon his suspicions, An tells him, "You’re not alone anymore. Vivid BAD SQUAD is here!" The group joins Akito on the stage and once they blow away the crowd with their synced performance, Akito stares in shock.

An then asks him, "Are you finally starting to get it?" to which Akito hums in confusion. An then lightly scolds Akito saying she doesn't care if he wants to try things on his own, but that they're going to surpass RAD WEEKEND as a team. She adds that it isn't just Akito's dream, and Akito stares in shock, coming to a realization before apologizing. After Arata leaves the venue, An smiles and beams about how Arata is great at singing and seems so nice. Akito frowns, annoyed, and questions her assertion, saying Arata is going to be their rival from then on. An tells Akito to relax, saying she knows. Afterwards, Akito promises the three he’ll work together with them. Later in Kohane's side story focused after the events of STRAY BAD DOGS, Akito again shows his annoyance after An brings up Arata.

In An’s STRAY BAD DOG card’s first side story, Vivid BAD SQUAD is seen practicing at Shibuya Park after the events at the BROWN live house. Kohane comments that Akito seems to be back to his old self, and An agrees, saying she was really worried but now glad everything worked out.

In Touya’s STRAY BAD DOG card’s first side story, he heads to Weekend Garage and hears An and Akito speaking of the topping on Kohane’s coffee. Touya asks about the situation and Akito comments on how many calories Kohane has on her drink, and An scolds him for bringing it up “when a girl’s enjoying her drink.” When the group continues to talk, An brings up her qualms with how she prefers tea over coffee, rendering her left out regarding toppings. Akito recommends her honey with milk tea, and she excitedly agrees. An then pauses and muses on how Akito is normally uninterested in this sort of discussion—Touya agrees, and Akito grows nervous, explaining he’s just joining in from time to time. An smiles smugly and teases Akito saying how he isn’t denying it. Akito frowns and says, “Quiet, you. Just leave it…

Akito then suddenly apologizes to Touya for making him worry, and An widens her eyes and teases, “Whoa, hold up! An actual apology.…?! What’s gotten into you, Akito?” Akito responds in annoyance how he’s just trying to do the right thing, and he then urges they should now start practice. Kohane giggles and tells An she’s glad Akito is feeling better, and An promptly agrees, reminding they’re going to beat Arata as a team.

In Kohane's STRAY BAD DOG card's second side story, she arrives at Shibuya Park and only finds Touya there. She asks him about An and Akito's whereabouts, and Touya explains they won't be able to make it. Kohane worries that something happened between them, and Touya then trails off before the scene switches to Crase Cafe, where Akito and An are groaning about studying for their exams. Akito and An get jittery as Touya scolds them (with Kohane attempting to lift them up), before KAITO asks An and Akito how many points above failing they were at. An responds gloomily, "Eight points." and Akito, "Nine." Kohane is shocked that An and Akito have to take make-up classes when the points were close to ten, and An is angered as she agrees. Akito nods in agreement, and Touya denies Kohane's reasoning, saying An and Akito were below average and therefore need to take the test once more.

KAITO tells the two to try their best, and Akito thanks him sadly. MEIKO tells them she'll give them some drinks, asking them to promise they'll study hard. To this, Akito and An say in unison, "Yes ma'am...", disappointed. Touya then lays out the study plan, explaining he'll help Akito with English and Kohane will help An with Classics. Kohane points out that An missed many points in the vocab section, and Toya points this out in Akito's scores as well. Touya scolds Kohane for spoon-feeding An the answers, and he tells her that An and Akito will be put on a blacklist then. Kohane shows shock, leading to An and Akito denying Touya's claim. After Kohane gets worried that An will be ridiculed for being on the blacklist, she starts to make An memorize everything on two pages in ten minutes. An is exasperated at Touya for bringing up the blacklist, and he urges her that'll help, now moving to Akito and ordering him the same.

Bout for Beside You[]

During the event, Akito and Miku help An realize she is afraid that Kohane will eventually surpass her in singing and leave her behind.

Vivid BAD SQUAD was in a dedicated practice sessions for their upcoming performance. Upon completion, An exhibited signs of discomfort or unease, catching the observant eye of Akito, who expressed genuine concern for her well-being.

Then, Akito took his time out to directly message An, asking to meet privately in the Street SEKAI for a conversation. An was curious, since they’d always talk in the group together, but she went ahead to meet up with him. Once they were alone, Akito approached the subject of An's recent emotions when practicing, expressing from his own perspective, "Something seems to be weighing on your mind lately, enough to evoke sadness or concern." Caught off guard, An sighed awkwardly, admitting, "Ah... So you noticed, huh?"

In a comforting and advising manner, Akito provided advice and offered guidance to An on how Kohane won’t leave her. Then the unexpected company of Miku and Len, noticed them together. Len remarked, "It's unusual to see you two together."

After giving valuable advice to An by Akito, Miku and Len. Akito then realized how they were running behind practice. Akito mentioned how they needed to address some 'awkward questions,' leading to playful jokes among fans who interpreted it as a couple joke.

In the Bout for Beside You after show, Toya mentions how Akito looked more relaxed that An is ALSO relaxed and back to her normal demeanor. TLDR, Akito was very concerned about An that Toya also noticed.

The Legend Still Vivid[]

The event story has a bit of a focus on Akito and An and them reminiscing the past, as the plotline revolves around the group revisiting RAD WEEKEND's venue.

Vivid BAD SQUAD heads to see the place where RAD WEEKEND was hosted, the four end up arriving thirty minutes earlier than scheduled. Kohane comments on this, leading to An excitedly saying the four must have been looking forward to this day so much that they woke up early, adding, "Even Akito!" Akito, annoyed, reminds An they're not children on a field trip. Touya then says An might not be far off, resulting in Akito telling Touya to be quiet.

Once the group head towards the building, An and Akito stand beside each other with An reminiscing on the past and how many people were lined up by the side, with Akito agreeing and saying years have passed with a smile. Once they enter, the place is dark and difficult to navigate through; Akito tells the group to not slip and fall, and An agrees with him. Once the lights are on, the four, with Akito and An standing beside each other, watch in awe as they examine the venue RAD WEEKEND was hosted at. An then comments on how small the place is compared to how she remembers it. Akito then tells her it's likely because they both were young children, and how they were likely shorter back then. An laughs and comments they must have grown up a lot since then as the two smile fondly at one another. Kohane thinks to herself how An and Akito are awestruck.

The group heads backstage, and both Akito and An comment on how tiny the place is. Akito and An are shown beside each other as they examine the backstage smiling. Once the four head onto the stage, Kohane starts singing after Miku's prompt, leading to An, Akito, and Touya following suit.

A Gentleman Thief's Thrilling White Day?![]

In Akito's "No Compromises When Making Chocolates" card's second side story, Akito is explaining his "performance" at the chocolate factory on White Day, but when he mentions he brought Chocota back to the green room while Mizuki helped Tsukasa make chocolates, An asks, seeming intrigued, "Wait, how did you get him [Chocota] out of there?" Akito takes a moment to think back to that moment, making him blush in embarrassment. An starts giggling hysterically at his embarrassment and teases him, even saying she couldn't picture him ever saying what he did as she continued to laugh. As Akito furrows his brows in annoyance at her teasing, he replies, "Will you quit laughing already?!" but later into the story, he teases An back.

Screaming?! Welcome to the Forest of Wolves![]

After Kohane told her teammates about her class cultural festival, An expected it to be a maid cafe, however when Kohane said it was a horror / scary theme, An instantly freezes up in fear, making Akito look at her confused. He then remembers from The Vivid Old Tale that An is horrified of ghosts, so he teased her about being scared which resulted in An blushing out of embarrassment.

An from Akito's pov

An smiling after winning against Akito

During New Year's, the members of Vivid BAD SQUAD go to a ski resort. An and Akito face against each other in snowboarding and An manages to win the current round. During the snowboarding match, sparkles are visibly shown in the background and An's card, which is from Akito's POV, has sparkles in them as well. It is also worth noting that An's card title is "enough to light up the ski slopes", indicating that Akito thinks she was "enough to light up the ski slopes" in that moment. Rin then mentions that the two have been competing for two days now and so far An has managed to get three wins, three losses and three draws. Akito sighs how they're tied again and when An says they need to declare a winner before they leave the resort, he tells her to not underestimate his stamina. They stop their competing for time being and go back to talk to Touya and Kohane.

In An's card's second side story, she competes against Akito in a skiing race. An watches Akito go and thinks to herself how he's still got it before she speeds up and manages to overtake him. An manages to reach the goal line first and cheers, and then Akito comments how she wanted to win so badly she couldn't almost stop. She then retorts that she went for it because she knew she would win and that she managed to stop in time. Later on, An suggests they all have a snowball fight. Akito teams up with Kohane and he tells her to not go easy on An and that "she'll be in tears once we're done with her".

In Akito's "No Way Out In Sight" card's second side story, he invites Vivid BAD SQUAD to a cafe that wasn't Weekend GARAGE or crasé cafe, when he ordered something that wasn't pancakes, An and the others were shocked. Akito then got annoyed at their shock and said to them "What do you guys think I am?", making An back saying "A pancake lover with sweet tooth.", making Akito make an annoyed face. In the official EN translation, An calls him "The pancake monster".

After they finished, Akito realized how An looked happier than before, giving a soft smile to her, another instance of his worry for her. An then thanks him for inviting them.

Other Stories[]

In An's Colorful Festival card, where she goes into a SEKAI of the Vivid Street in her memories, she mentions to Len and Rin that Akito inspired her and how he also kept telling her they'll make their dream of surpassing RAD WEEKEND come true one day. In this card it's implied that An wanted to ask Akito to be partners based on the dialogue where she says, "Yeah, but, he also found his partner pretty soon after he started, y'know?"

In Rui's first side story in his Words of Encouragement card, Vivid BAD SQUAD goes to congratulate Tsukasa and commend his show. Rui reveals that Akito helped him to the first aid tent, and An is visibly shocked, so she jumps to tease Akito, calling him a good boy. In response, with a frown Akito tells her to be quiet.

Fanon[]

Akian is one of the most popular het ships in the Project SEKAI fandom with its popularity being primarily owed to the fact that the two are in a co-ed unit together, something rare in and of itself due to the games distinct lack of male characters in units compared to the vast number of female ones. Because they're in the same unit, they have more interactions with each other along with their fellow unit members than they do with any of the characters outside of their group. Because of these common interactions, it is seen as a rival to Anhane, AkiToya, Akikoha and Touan. It is often shipped together with Toukoha.

For fan reactions, Akian fans tend to see Akito and An's dynamic within their unit's main story and additional materials as entertaining in their rivalry, and their similar passion towards their goals. It also helps that in their pairing you can find some pretty famous romantic tropes like "tsundere" or "like an old married couple". In the Eastern part of the fandom, one of the most popular prompts is to make Akito flustered by An's "too close" sense of distance. At the same time, fans of other ships often criticize Akian, accusing its of being less interesting than the slash ships with Akito and An, not least because of the friendship theme and lack of too explicit ship bait, slash pairings seem to get more development and attention from the author than the straight pairings. But one way or another, in the end it often comes down to choosing ships from the het and slash options in general. It has gained quite significant popularity since the start of 2023, with many former Akian haters warming up to the ship or even shipping it.

It is both An and Akito's 2nd most written ship on AO3. In Pixiv, they have 948 works in total (238 illustrations + 88 manga + 622 fanfictions), making them the 3rd het ship with most fan content in the branch after Ruinene and Emukasa.

Some people are against Akian because they see An and Akito as siblings. This is likely because An’s father has acted as Akito’s surrogate father since Akito’s middle school years and because An and Akito often bicker like Akito and his older sister.

Ship Weeks[]

The first Akian Week was held on July 20th-27th, 2023, under the AkianWeek2023 hashtag on Twitter. Prompts for the first day were "confession", "jealousy or Hanahaki disease" for the second day, "wedding or picnic" for the third day, "Gimme×Gimme or Traffic Jam" for the fourth day, "royalty AU or sunflower AU" for the fifth day, "free choice or future" for the sixth day, and "An's Birthday" for the seventh and final day (since the week ended on her birthday).

The second Akian Week was held on July 20th-26th, 2024, under the akianweek24 hashtag on Twitter. Prompts for the first day were "studying or stargazing", "running away or burnout" for the second day, "sick day or lazy mornings" for the third day, "video games or sports" for the fourth day, "future AU or detective AU" for the fifth day, "unrequited love or fake dating" for the sixth day, and seventh and final day was free choice or similarly to the first week, "An's Birthday".

Trivia[]

  • Their ship is referred to with the "🥞🎧" or “🧡🩵” emojis.
  • They have a 16 cm height difference, with Akito being 176 cm and An being 160 cm tall.
  • Their Kizuna Rank titles are: "Bad at Studying", "Team Lively", and "My Partner is the Best".
  • Some of their Cheerful Carnival Team names are "Guessing & Cramming Skills" and "Just Don't Get a Failing Grade".
  • As mentioned above in their Kizuna Ranks, Akito and An both tend to have trouble studying, to the point where they need to take supplementary classes.
  • In the fandom, Akian duet alt vocals are regarded as a bit of a meme, most of the time due to their bad mixing. As such, some have even claimed that "Colorful Palette must hate Akian" or that someone in the development team is trying to sabotage them constantly.
    • In the third Vivid BAD SQUAD Archive, they covered Gimme×Gimme. Aside from being criticized for its horrendous mixing and quality compared to the other VIVID BAD SQUAD Archive entries, some anti-shippers have pettily used it to justify that "Akian truly has no chemistry".
    • At the end of the GimmexGimme cover, there was a kiss that can be heard. Akian fans tend to headcanon that they kissed at the end. At the same time, some have also called it a stretch as the kiss/smooch sound effect is also part of the original VIRTUAL SINGER version.
    • They performed this song along, with only them being in the cafe together.
    • Their another vocal duet for Egoist was so badly received due to its line distribution that Colorful Palette released an official apology and promised to add an updated version for the duet later. On September 26, 2023, they updated the alternate vocal, which has now been added in the game.
  • Akito and An have another vocal duets for ECHO and Traffic Jam together. In addition to this, An sings Akito's parts in her and Kohane's version of RAD DOGS.
    • In An's Machi alt vocal cover, throughout the full chorus, Akito is singing with her in the background.
  • In Vivid Old Tale's set, Akito and An have matching sunflower earrings, and Akito has a butterfly earring just like An's hairclips.
  • In the Project Sekai Manga Anthology, Touya says how Akito and An are acting like Kohane's parents.
  • In the "Walk on and on" event, it is revealed that both Akito and An are in charge of composing their unit's songs.
  • When Wedding An's event banner was released, Fumiya Imai (Akito's voice actor) commented on it saying she looks beautiful in it. Some people, especially in the Western fandom, took this as confirmation that Akian is canon or that Imai is an Akian supporter and even harassed him for it, to the point where he deleted his tweet.
  • Together with Toukoha, they also have an unofficial fanartist event called "YOU-hollllic STREET", which has been now run for three times (found under the #youholic_01, #youholic_02 and #youholic_03 hashtags in Twitter).
  • There is a running gag of An's cards with Akito's POV having sparkles/anything akin to a "doki doki" scene in a romance anime. Fans joke that this is confirmation of Akito having a crush on An.
  • An knows that Akito’s height is approximately around 60 fluffy pancakes stacked on top of each other, making Akito a bit flushed.
  • In Version 1 of their birthday cards, they both have rings on their index finger.
  • There has been two instances where the official EN translation of a line between Akito and An is different and more than the accurate original JP line. The first was in "Bout For Beside You", where the original line is Akito stating that the others will be worried if he and are late. However, in the EN translation, Akito says he and An will have to answer some "awkward questions", insinuating a couple joke. Another instance was Rui's "Words of Encouragement" side story. An calls Akito shy for not telling them he helped Rui, while in the official EN translation, she calls him a good boy. Fans of Akian are delighted by this and sometimes joke that the official ENSekai translators ship Akian.
