Alice & Dinah is the friend ship between Alice and Dinah from the Alice in Wonderland fandom.

Canon[]

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland[]

Dinah is with Alice and her sister when the latter is reading, which the Disney adaptations changed to her sister giving her a lesson. In the movie, Alice sings a song to Dinah about how much she dislikes this world and would prefer to go in a "world of her own". They then see the White Rabbit, which causes Alice to chase after him and Dinah after her. When Alice falls into the rabbit hole, she says goodbye to Dinah, with the movie adding a shot of Dinah waving goodbye to Alice with a stunned look on her face. In the book, while falling Alice has time to lament what Dinah would do without her.

When meeting the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, Alice mentions Dinah again, but tries to keep quiet as the Dormouse is understandably afraid of cats.

Dinah is with Alice when she wakes up, with the movie implying that everything past the White Rabbit had been a dream.

Alice Through the Looking Glass[]

In the Looking Glass Lands, Alice mentions that Dinah had two kittens as the White Queen and the Red Queen remind her of them. In the end, when Alice gets furious at the Red Queen, she grabs her majesty and violently shakes her... only to wake up with one of Dinah's kittens in her hands.

American McGee's Alice[]

For years Alice believed the report of Dinah starting the fire that killed her family and deeply traumatized her. With everyone believing that the family cat had simply knocked over a lit old lamp that was left in the living room, while everyone else was upstairs. All while forgetting Dinah's true role and location that night. When Alice started to ask questions about that night in order to patch up her shattered memories that were affecting Wonderland, she recovered her suppressed memories. Dinah was in her room that night, while the lamp she was accused of knocking over was outside her bedroom door. Realizing that Dinah was not only innocent, but was also the reason she managed to escape the blaze. When Dinah popped onto the window ledge of the opened window to get outside, Alice followed after her. As Alice continued on she uncovers the true culprit.

Fanon[]

Although Dinah is a minor character in the original Alice in Wonderland story and it's many known adaptations over the years, people still feel drawn to the bond Alice has with her pet cat. With how some like to include or simply have Alice mention Dinah in their AiW fanfics and art. Some like to believe that Dinah might be connected to the Cheshire Cat, with how Wonderland has appeared to be dream or a figment of Alice's imagination, in some versions. Since Alice Through the Looking Glass has the White and Red Queens remind her of Dinah's two kittens and had even woke up to find one of them in her hands, after grabbing and then shaking the Red Queen. Supporting the theory.

There are theories that the cat who appears next to Alice at the end of American McGee's Alice, was either Dinah or possibly a stray that simply reminds Alice of her cat. Deciding to take the cat with her after being released from the asylum. Some fans of the AMA games, or the AiW fan base, didn't like the way Dinah was portrayed as a cat version of the "cow who knocked over a lantern that started a fire." Until Alice: Madness Returns cleared Dinah's name, as well as reveal that Dinah had played apart in Alice's survival that night.

When Dinah didn't appear in the Tim Burton films of Alice in Wonderland, fans were upset about it. Until they took into account that they focus on an much older Alice and the real world locations weren't places that one would being their pet cat to. There was also the possibly that Dinah in the Burtonverse might have passed away sometime before the events of the two films.

Since Dinah's role in the original animated Disney film was very small, fans of the Disney Junior spinoff cartoon, Alice's Wonderland Bakery liked the way that Alice's great-granddaughter has her own cat that is not only related to the original Dinah, but is also the spitting image of 1951 Dinah and was even named after her. As she serves as one of the main recurring characters and season 2 had AWB Alice and Dinah make a cameo reference scene to Disney's original take on Alice and Dinah. Alice saying "goodbye" to Dinah as she falls through a portal-like tunnel to another world, as the two wave to each other. Some have even wondered if the relationship that original Alice has with her Dinah is anything like the bond their AWB descendants share.

On AO3, there are currently 3 written works.
