AloRai is the slash ship between Aloha and Rider from the Splatoon fandom.

Canon[]

Aloha and Rider are occasionally teammates, with Rider substituting Army on the S4. They generally get along well and work together seamlessly, though they argue often and exchange various insults. However, Rider shows less aggression and spite towards Aloha who teases him often. They contrast each other's personalities directly, as Aloha is cheerful and flirty while Rider is stern and stoic. On the battlefield, Aloha is constantly grinning while Rider wears an unamused and serious expression. Though, Rider occasionally smiles alongside Aloha when they coordinate their attacks.

They are seen together outside of competitive battle multiple times, such as when they go to Wahoo World so Rider can buy Aloha a new keychain as compensation, or eating Army's curry together. More often than not, Rider is always seen exasperated at Aloha's antics in the background.

In Volume 1, Rider expresses his respect and fear towards the S4 which includes Aloha, whom he dubs stronger than himself but later rivals and bickers with.

Volume 8[]

Alorai wahoo world

Aloha and Rider at Wahoo World.

Rider spots Team Blue donned in costumes at Wahoo World while he's with Aloha. Rider panics and hides behind the wall, and Aloha, standing behind him, asks why he's hiding, Rider begins to sweat and asks if he looks like the type of guy to be at an amusement park, and Aloha responds, "What? You're embarrassed?" leading to Rider's annoyance. Aloha reminds Rider that they're here because his limited-edition keychain was broken by Rider. He then incredulously asks, "But it's to give to a girl, right?" to which Aloha confirms and explains he gets "super popular with the girls." A flashback of Rider dropping Aloha's keychain plays over as Aloha hums and tells Rider it's his responsibility to get a new one. Rider sweats more and mumbles to himself he can't let anyone see him at Wahoo World without his team.

After Rider joins Team Costume Lovers and engages in a battle with Team Blue (resulting in his loss), Rider tries to reason that he was only here to get a keychain, and Aloha cuts in to explain that he asked Rider to. Goggles asks Rider if he wants his keychain instead, leading to Rider yelling that he'll buy one for Aloha himself. Shortly after, Rider comes back with the keychain and hands it to Aloha, prompting his delight as he thanks him. Goggles suggests they go on rides together and Rider refuses, and back at Inkopolis Square Aloha exclaims how fun it was and that he was glad to come. Later on, Rider is seen scowling at Aloha as they walk beside each other.

Volume 9[]

AloRai

Aloha teases Rider

Team Blue is shocked to see Army injured in a wheelchair. To their further surprise, they see Rider with the rest of the S4 (Aloha, Mask, Skull), substituting for Army. Rider reinforces that he's only teaming up with them for the tournament and explains their goal is to win. Goggles jumps at the S4 in an attempt of pantsing, and only Rider falls for it as everyone dodges; Rider crushes Goggles with his Dynamo and Aloha watches with a smile, explaining he's sure the tournament will be fun. He then stands behind Rider and winks, calling Rider the weakest of them and urging him to try his best, prompting Rider to darken and scowl. Rider says he won't lose to any of the S4, and Aloha along with Skull and Mask darkens as they begin to quarrel over the matter.

Aloha and Rider are seen face-to-face arguing, accidentally getting a stain of Inkfall's shirt, causing him to scream in anger and threaten to beat the S4. They then darken and glare at Inkfall, still arguing in the background before Team Blue walks off. The S4's first battle against Team Inkfall commences, and Rider quickly heads to pick up the clams; Aloha runs beside him and shows shock, remarking, "You don't look good with the clams, Rider." Mask and Skull agree with Aloha, and Rider yells at the three to shut up. Mask and Skull are seen focusing on the game while Aloha and Rider bicker, with the audience sighing at their behavior.

Eventually, Mask breaks the team's barrier, but Aloha and Rider are arguing once more. Aloha brings up how Rider broke his keychain, and Rider quickly counters that he bought a new one for him already, with Skull cutting in and asking who ate his pudding. Aloha and Rider are broken out of their argument after Team Inkfall breaks their barrier, quickly heading to stop the opposing team and fighting determinedly.

Rider growls in annoyance, and Aloha insults Rider by innocently advising to hit their opponents properly. Rider hisses. "Look who's talking!" Aloha and Rider continue to bicker as they approach Inkfall's base, slowly losing the match before they snap out of it. Aloha sweats and wonders if they worried the audience, and Rider scoffs before Goggles' cheering reverts them to their competitive and focused state. The team starts to coordinate and work together, and eventually they win the match while smiling in victory. Aloha poses next to Rider after they win the battle and are later seen celebrating in the background.

Volume 10[]

Aloha and Rider are seen blank-faced in the back when Skull and Goggles rapidly eat together. The match between the S4 and Team Blueperor begins its preparations, but instead of practicing for the match, Aloha takes souvenir pictures and tells an annoyed Rider he's in the way. Once the match begins, Team Blueperor takes ahold of the Rainmaker and approaches S4's base, and in the shadows Aloha hums, "Okay. Oookaay.🎵" to Rider as he responds by grunting. They both jump up to counteract Blueperor's attacks, and Goggles points out that Rider and Aloha changed their weapons. Aloha winks and asks, "Cute, huh?" while Rider glares at Blueperor for their slow observation.

Goggles fires at Aloha, though he throws a splash wall to block the attack and says, "We're not going to lose either!" Specs calls out to Blueperor to watch out as Aloha and Rider go in for the attack. However, they suddenly split ways to Blueperor's shock. Goggles wonders if they went to the bathroom and Emperor tells Rider and Aloha they can use his private lavatory, to which they both decline angrily. Rider and Aloha come back to the field with their specials charged, activating double Booyah Bombs as Rider then smiles.

Rider and Aloha shocked by Goggles’ antics

Goggles watches in awe and says the S4 must be great friends with their coordination; Aloha and Rider scream out that this is only for the tournament, before Aloha and Rider simultaneously throw their booyah bombs at Goggles and take the Rainmaker. As the battle commences fiercely, Aloha calls Rider and Mask his bodyguards, to which Rider protests to this nickname. Aloha then responds, "C'mon, just keep protecting me. 🎵"

Aloha and Rider fight alongside each other as the battle continues. Team Blueperor ends up winning, and Rider ends up smiling alongside Aloha by the end of the match.

AloRai is a generally popular ship within the fandom, though it's often overshadowed by many of Aloha's rival ships like AloAmi or AloDiver, as well as GoRai on Rider's side. Many fans prefer GoRai, as it's the 'original' Rider x 'carefree happy character' ship; on the other hand, some fans tend to enjoy AloRai more, as Rider expresses less antagonism against Aloha compared to many of their rival ships. AloRai has around 38 works on Ao3. Since MaSkull often third-wheels AloRai's unending arguing, it's sometimes shipped alongside.

The ship became popular after Rider and Aloha went to Wahoo World together so Rider could buy a new keychain for Aloha as compensation, which fans deemed as something out of character and strangely kind for Rider.
