Alphonica is the het ship between Alfonse and Veronica from the Fire Emblem fandom.
Canon[]
Alfonse is the prince of the kingdom of Askr, the leader of the Order of Heroes, and alongside his younger sister Sharena and Anna, an Askr commander. Veronica is the heir apparent to the Emblian Empire who is afflicted by the blood curse of the dragon Embla, which compels her to destroy Askr and its royal family under Embla's control.
Book I[]
Originally, the kingdom of Askr and the empire of Embla were in constant war, because their respective gods never saw eye to eye: the god Askr preferred peace and the open world while the goddess Embla wanted only more solitude and darkness. This would later manifest itself in its first rulers, Líf and Thrasir.
Veronica, being from the Embla Empire, hated anyone who took part in Askr and planned to destroy it. To do this, she resorted to her way of summoning heroes through contracts with them, unlike Alfonse, who leaves the task of summoning to Kiran and his orb weapon, the Breidablik.
Eventually, Alfonse, with the help of his sister Sharena, his friend Anna and the heroes summoned by Kiran, would defeat the entire army that Veronica sent with the aim of invading Askr.
Book II[]
Veronica, in an attempt to erase her bitterest enemy from the map (Askr), allied herself with King Surtr of Múspell, the kingdom of flames. This also led to a confrontation with Nifl, the ice kingdom and enemy of Múspell, whom Surtr managed to invade even without the help of the Embla Empire. This led one of Nifl's princesses, Fjorm, to forge an alliance with Alfonse and the kingdom of Askr to defeat Embla and Múspell. However, during the course of the war, Surtr proved to be a much crueler king than normal and this is shown when in order to invade Askr, Surtr forced Veronica to give herself as an offering for the Rite of Flames, which led Veronica to doubt whether she should fear him or Alfonse.
Unexpectedly for her, Alfonse rescued Veronica from Surtr's hands. Eventually he would defeat Laegjarn, the first princess of Múspell, and then Surtr twice to finally end the war against Múspell, both of them falling dead. This rescue was not enough for Veronica to trust Alfonse, because she still held grudges against Askr. Lavaetain would success Surtr as the queen of Múspell.
Book III[]
A new enemy, Hel, the Death Sovereign, would cause most deaths to most habitants of the Zenith continent and grew her army with animated corpses of the dead. When she began to invade Askr and Embla, Veronica allied herself unwillingly and reluctantly herself with Alfonse, despite her willings of killing him, to stop Hel, with the fear that she would wipe all the Emblians out of the world. They both would surprised later as they found the alternate dead versions of themselves, Líf and Thrasir. Both Alphonse and Veronica would cooperate with Eir and Kiran to ultimately defeat Hel once and for all. After that, Veronica decides to stay neutral to Askr, as she this time didn't want to be the friend of the Askran people, but also she didn't caused more wars against them.
Book IV[]
Alfonse and his friends were suffering the problem of the nightmares materializing themselves in the real world. A fake Veronica, along with her brother Bruno, would appear to confront Alfonse and his friends. When they seemed too strong for Alfonse, a fairy elf came to help, revealing Alfonse that the fake Veronica was actually a nightmare. The elf introduced herself as Peony, a fairy ljosálfar from Ljósálfheimr and she promised to offer some help against Freyja and her subordinates, Plumeria and Triandra, the dark ellfs from Dökkálfheimr.
Alfonse's experience with a fake Veronica as a nightmare led him to mistake the real Veronica as another one, but later, when Alfonse realizes it, they decided to cooperate instead of fighting between themselves. Eventually Veronica would disappear in one of the tries to save Alfonse from Freyja's nightmares, only to reveal that the Alfonse that was in the dreams was a fake one and his true identity was Kiran the summoner.
After escaping all nightmares, Alfonse, Kiran and his friends woke up and they continued with their diary activities in Askr.
Book V[]
For some reason, Fáfnir, the king of Niðavellir, became mad and he started to invade every other kingdoms, including Askr. After most battles, Fáfnir would be captured and imprisoned in Askr, but some time after, he is freed and he started invading Embla. This led Bruno, Veronica's brother, to ask Alfonse, Reginn and Kiran for help, which would led Veronica to cooperate with Alfonse once more. Alfonse would defeat Otr, Fáfnir and finally, Eitri. After this war, Veronica decided to stay neutral to Askr.
Book VI[]
There, it's revealed the real reason why Veronica became hostile towards Alfonse and the Askran kingdom: she has a cursed blood that is controlled by Embla, the goddess of darkness, who hates anyone who took part in Askr and planned to destroy it.
The goddess Embla started to create darkness and wrapped some villages around it. When Alfonse and the others came to the rescue, they found a girl that can transform into a cow, who resulted to be Ash. She was in trouble when Elm, a human-bat species was hostigating her. Alfonse aided her and they decided to stop the goddess themselves. Veronica was still suffering from her cursed blood and therefore, she asked Alfonse to go away from her before she kills them. With the help of the god Askr, Alfonse manages to free Veronica from Embla's curse but at the cost of Bruno's life. Alfonse would eventually defeat and kill the goddess Embla. Afterwards, Veronica, encouraged by Sharena, made in good terms with Alfonse and the Askr kingdom, which would make it the ally of the Embla empire.
Book VII[]
Veronica has a minor role there, as she is only seen confronting Gullveig. Unexpectedly, Gullveig decided to try to erase Alfonse using her power of time control rather than wiping Veronica out. However, Gullveig was successfully defeated by Alfonse with the help of Seidr and Nerpuz.
Book VIII[]
Some time after Askr and Embla making good terms, some creatures from Yggdrasil are trying to sabotage this. Ratatoskr was sent to kill Alfonse, but she instead went to help them. Meanwhile, Veronica is targeted by another strange creature. It's up to Alfonse, Ratatoskr, Kiran and friends to stop the evil plans from who are targeting both Alfonse and Veronica and trying to kill them.
Other games[]
Supplementary media such as the Chibi Playhouse shorts strongly imply that Veronica has feelings for Alfonse, though no hints have been given as to whether or not Alfonse reciprocates these feelings. In a crossover event with the Dragalia Lost game, they set their differences aside to work together to return to their world after finding themselves in the world of Dragalia Lost.
Fanon[]
Alphonica originally began as a "crack pairing," where fans would only ship them ironically, due to the fact they were enemies. This changed after Book III revealed that Lif and Thrasir, two of the book's antagonists, were revealed to actually future versions of Alfonse and Veronica, respectively. The book also implied that Lif and Thrasir have a romantic relationship, or at least a very close platonic one, as evidenced by the two teaming up as a Duo Hero in the game's 2021 Valentine's banner, where their present selves also appear, albeit as separate Heroes alongside Alphonse's parents. The ship thus became an extension of Lifsir (Lif/Thrasir) and vice versa to many fans, with support of Alphonica gradually increasing with the release of Book VI, which focuses on Veronica's blood curse with Embla.
On AO3, there are currently 10+ written works.
