Life is Strange: Before the Storm[]
The prequel to the first game, Before the Storm shows how Rachel and Chloe first met, how they bonded so fiercely and why Rachel was so important to Chloe.
Episode 1: Awake[]
In 2009, late at night, Chloe attends a Firewalk concert at the old mill. As she is making her way to the stage, she knocks into a man, spilling his beer. The man is furious and unannounced to Chloe follows her upstairs when she can’t get through a few other people downstairs. The man and his friend threaten to attack Chloe when a girl shows up, yelling to get the men’s attention off of Chloe. Chloe is able to get away and runs to the girl’s side. Upon seeing the girl up close, Chloe is surprised to see that it’s Rachel Amber of all people. Rachel grabs Chloe’s hand, pulling her back downstairs, through the lounge area and then to the front of the stage. Frank Bowers sees the commotion, leading to him physically blocking the two men as they follow back downstairs. From his help, Rachel and Chloe mosh and dance together, enjoying the concert.
The following morning, Chloe wakes up in her bedroom, pondering what happened the previous night, questioning if that really was Rachel Amber she was with. She can check her computer to see a photo of her and Rachel that was posted to social media.
David Madsen drives Chloe to Blackwell Academy, where after having explored the school’s front grounds and spoke with other students, Chloe goes to enter into the building when Rachel bursts through the door, taking her hand and pulling her to the drama room. Rachel interrupts a rehearsal of The Tempest to ask for the people’s opinions of her outfit. While the people respond that she looks good, Chloe says, “Rachel looks awesome”. Rachel proceeds to twirl, winking at Chloe when their eyes meet.
After a small debate over Dana Ward’s character’s lines, Rachel will go into the dressing room and ask Chloe to bring her belt to her. Once Chloe fetches the belt, she has the option to hand it to Rachel or toss it over the changing divider. If she tosses it, the belt will hit Rachel, leading to Chloe apologizing. If she hands it to Rachel, Chloe will walk in on Rachel in her bra, becoming embarrassed. Rachel doesn’t seem to mind, noting how Chloe reacts to her half-dressed status. Once she’s finished dressing, the two speak about the events of the previous night, Rachel remarking how she wished it “never had to end”. Wanting to have more fun, Rachel asks Chloe if she’d like to join her on a “field trip,” which Chloe agrees too. However before they leave to ditch school, Rachel takes notice of Chloe’s blacken eye that she had sustained that night. She offers to cover it up with the some makeup, which Chloe can accept or decline.
They arrive to the junkyard to see a train steadily picking up speed on the nearby tacks. Chloe half heartily mentions if they should have taken the bus instead, only for Rachel to proclaim that if they’re “going rouge,” they’re going to do it right. Rachel runs to jump into an opening on the train, with Chloe questioning to herself what she’s getting herself into, but she too runs after Rachel, also jumping into the train. Rachel helps pull her up and the two find crates to use as seats.
As Chloe seats across from Rachel, she tells herself to “play it cool,” before asking herself if this is what nervousness feels like. Rachel comments, “it’s kina weird that they’re hanging out,” indirectly addressing how different they are. She asks Chloe that she bets Chloe is wondering what they’re doing, with Chloe confirming. Rachel tells her that all she wanted was “some company,” leaving Chloe confused, asking “that’s it?” Rachel repeats, verifying. Rachel suggests that they play “Two Truths and Lie,” with Chloe agreeing. The two play with different outcomes depending whether the Chloe played fair or cheated. Once the game is finished, Chloe decides she’d like to listen to music, pulling out her ear buds. She can either share with Rachel or listen alone. A short time later, Rachel realizes that they’re “here,” telling Chloe to jump off the train. Chloe is shocked, and can either jump, impressing Rachel, or Rachel will push her off.
The two arrive to the Overlook Park, where Rachel wants to play one of her favorite games. She attempts to get a viewfinder to work, only to discover it’s out of order. She asks Chloe to fix it and Chloe is able to use a nail file, given to her by Rachel, to remove a placard from a park bench. She then uses the placard to pry open the viewfinder, retrieving a quarter inside. They insert the quarter into a different viewfinder, where together they look through it, watching people around the park and making up stories about what they see. Rachel focuses the viewfinder on a man and a woman kissing, becoming visibly upset. Her sudden shift in mood startles Chloe, taking her aback.
Wanting a drink and seeing a nearby couple having a picnic with wine, Rachel convinces Chloe to steal the wine. Rachel fakes having a medical emergency, gaining the couple’s attention. With the couple distracted, Chloe goes in for the steal. She is spotted however, entering into a backtalk challenge against the concerned couple. Should Chloe fail, the couple sees through the deception, leading to Chloe grabbing the bottle of wine and running away with Rachel. Rachel jumps up at the last moment if Chloe succeeds, thanking the couple for their help. Still none the wiser, Chloe secretly swipes the bottle of wine.
Rachel and Chloe walk along the train tracks, drinking their stolen prize. They come across a junkyard that Chloe wants to excitedly explore. Rachel is standoffish and while Chloe doesn’t understand why, when Rachel throws the wine bottle in frustration at Chloe asking questions, Chloe mentions that she can “work with that”. She finds a baseball bat for Rachel to get “smashy,” only for Rachel to throw the bat, wanting to be left alone. Chloe finds Rachel’s behavior to be incredibly rude, calling her out. Rachel decides she’s leaving, only for Chloe to beg her not to, claiming that she “doesn’t want to ruin [this] the way she ruins everything else in her life.” Rachel asks what she means, leading to Chloe either telling her a “friendship” or “something more”. Should Chloe choose “friendship,” she’ll stutter while saying it. She’ll attempt to explain that she doesn’t want to be alone anymore. Should Chloe choose “something more,” she’ll say it’s “friendship, but more” and that whatever is going on between them is special. However Rachel is still in her bitter mood, resulting in her leaving the junkyard anyway.
Chloe begins to cry and becomes enraged, destroying things around the junkyard with the baseball bat. After some time, she falls asleep, waking up later that night. Back at the Overlook Park, she comes to find Rachel standing underneath the same tree that they saw the man and woman kissing under earlier. Rachel is glad that Chloe showed up and soon begins to explain why she was so upset earlier. She states that the man was her father, James Amber, kissing his not-wife. Chloe is sympathetic. Rachel shows Chloe a photo of her father and her that she’s been carrying around for the past five years. Rachel remarks that Chloe is a badass and that she’s brave following her earlier actions at the old mill Firewalk concert. Chloe claims she wishes to leave Arcadia Bay, with Rachel agreeing too, saying they should leave together. Rachel asks for Chloe’s lighter, then proceeds to burn the photo from in a trashcan. Full of emotion, Rachel kicks the trashcan over and screams, causing the tree to be engulfed in flames, leaving Chloe visibly shocked.
