Canon[]
Angel Investigations[]
Angel, a vampire cursed with a soul, had recently moved to Los Angeles after leaving Sunnydale and his love Buffy behind. Doyle, a half-human half-demon, sought Angel out at his apartment, revealing he had been sent by The Powers That Be to guide Angel on a path of redemption.
Though Angel was initially skeptical of Doyle and resistant to the idea of letting anyone in, Doyle convinced him that he needed to "get into people's lives" and make a difference in the world in order to atone for his past sins. Doyle explained that The Powers sent him visions of people in trouble that Angel was meant to help.
Their first case involved helping a young woman named Tina who was being terrorized by a wealthy and powerful vampire. Though the mission ended tragically with Tina's death, Angel agreed to help those in need, with both Doyle and Cordelia Chase, founding the detective agency Angel Investigations. The trio's partnership began with Doyle as the light-hearted, humanizing influence to Angel's dark and brooding personality.
As the three established the detective agency, Doyle suggested they should party and socialise more. Angel was resistant to the idea, dismissing it, clearly aware of Doyle's crush on Cordelia. However, Doyle persisted, pushing Angel to socialize more and embrace the good he could do by helping people.
Their next case involved a body-jumping demon preying on lonely singles at a bar called D'oblique. Angel struggled with the idea of socializing, but Doyle insisted that they needed to visit the bar to try to identify who might be in trouble. Throughout the case, Doyle provided information about the demon's strengths and weaknesses. His light-hearted quips and banter with Cordelia helped to balance out Angel's intense and often dour demeanor.
Legacy[]
Angel struggled and mourned Doyle's death for several years. He went so far as to plead with The Oracles, asking them to rewind time and resurrect Doyle, but they refused, as doing so would have made Doyle's sacrifice meaningless.
Alternate reality[]
In an alternate reality created by Skip, Cordelia Chase never joined Angel Investigations. Instead, Doyle passed his visions to Angel. This action could only occur when the host for the visions truly loved the person, potentially suggesting some feelings from Doyle. After his death, the alternate Angel had a mental breakdown, unable to cope with the visions given to him.

Fanon[]
Doyle/Angel has some popularity in the Angel fandom, though other ships such as Cangel and Cordoyle are more popular. It is one of the more popular slash ships, though only has a small amount of popularity so it could arguably be a rarepair.
A popular headcanon is that Doyle is bisexual or pansexul, mostly due to Doyle hinting that he is attracted towards Angel in "I Fall to Pieces". He also has an canonical crush on Cordelia.
