On the day before the Survey Corps’ 57th Expedition Outside the Walls, Annie awakens to a dream of Marco being eaten by a Titan, which she, Reiner, and Bertolt have caused themselves. While getting ready for the day, she also thinks of the human lives she will have to take for her mission in capturing Eren Jaeger, which is also set for tomorrow during the expedition. But even though she feels sorry, she is already prepared to do it no matter what obstacles get in her way. Annie goes out of the bathroom and asks Hitch a favor to report her as sick for tomorrow’s District Patrol. She adds that it is for some minor business after Hitch asks her for a reason why. Thinking to herself about what might be the result of her mission, Hitch hands her a sketch of Carly Stratmann, a young woman who was reported to be missing for more than five days already. Hitch states that Carly’s case was just given to her by other soldiers a few days back, but she finds it boring as it was not a “juicy” one. As payment for Annie’s favor, Hitch passes the case once more to her.
Annie takes a carriage to the mansion of the Stratmann family to find information about Carly. Elliot Stratmann, Carly’s father, tells her the details of the days he spent with her prior to her disappearance, their relationship as father and daughter and how he knows little about her. Soon, Annie leaves the mansion and continues searching for more clues. After a few more interrogations and some fistfights, Annie finally spots Carly later that night, and the two meet for the first time. In a private room, Annie and Carly speak together. Annie asks her what her secret is, to which Carly responds that she isn’t ready to move into a jail cell quite yet. Annie reveals she doesn’t have plans on arresting her just as long as she comes back home, so Carly finally confesses to her involvement in the coderoin trade and that her father is the trade boss. Carly then asks her to pretend she was not found so Annie forges a Wall Rose travel permit for her.
At the Pit Lidors, Carly bids farewell to the patrons and gives the bartender, an old friend of hers, a large sum of money for safe-keeping. Annie asks Carly what made her want to be so kind to people like them, and Carly says that maybe it’s because they don’t know that they can’t get something back once lost. She asks Annie if she had ever rebelled against her father and tells her that it is normal when Annie revealed that she had once. When Carly is gone to get food for Annie, who has not had anything to eat since lunch, she thinks back to when she opposed her father by attacking him relentlessly during a training session. Carly returns with a limeade and some donuts. Annie notices her eyes turn red but does not comment on it. Carly is shocked to know that Annie has never had donuts before, so she urges her to try one as she brags that she got it from the best place. Annie enjoys them and asks for more. After a while, Carly admits that she is the only one who knows how to produce coderoin, meaning that it is also over for her father once she departs. Annie grabs the forged Wall Rose travel permit inside her jacket and hands it over to Carly. She asks her why she needs to leave when she could just stop making the drugs. Carly says that she would not stand seeing her father’s condition and that Stohess might be better off once she is gone. Annie understands her and says that she will not try to stop her anymore. Carly reaches out for Annie’s hand while she bids goodbye and gives thanks to her. As she was heading towards the Wall, Carly turns around once more and waves her hand at Annie.

The ship isn't popular within the fandom as it is overshadowed by the more popular Annie ships. Adding to that, Carly is a minor character who only appeared in two episodes of Attack on Titan that aren't considered fully canon.
