AnneMary is the femslash ship between Anne Bonny and Mary Read, a historical relationship that's been adapted into other fandoms including Black Sails, Our Flag Means Death, and Fate.
Canon[]
Our Flag Means Death[]
Anne and Mary are both renowned pirates. However, they have since taken a break from piracy and now run an antique shop together. They invite Stede and Blackbeard to join them for dinner. When they arrive at Anne and Mary's house, they pair tell tales about their pirating days. They later excuse themselves to check on dinner, where Anne notices that Mary forgot to remove the intestines from the rabbit that they're cooking. They have an argument, which culminates in Anne sticking a knife in Mary's back.
When they return to the living room, Stede points out the utensil. Instead of removing it, Anne begins to play with it, flicking it and causing Mary more pain. However, Mary seems to enjoy this. Stede and Blackbeard look on awkwardly, with the former offering to leave the room. Later, Stede assists Anne with dinner. She flirts with him, before eventually kissing him. However, the kiss is short-lived as she soon begins to vomit from poison that Mary snuck into her glass. Stede is concerned, but Anne admits that this is a common occurrence in their household.
After dinner, Stede and Blackbeard confront Anne and Mary. They accuse the woman of using them as their "playthings" all night. Mary agrees, explaining that because they live in the middle of nowhere and sell antiques to "no one", they have to get their fun where they can. Anne replies that they can leave whenever they want, but that Mary afraid of being too old to be a pirate. Mary calls Anne a bitch, causing Anne to scream and storm out of the room. As Mary tries to explain that she and Anne have an "adult" relationship in comparison to the puppydog love between Stede and Blackbeard, Anne sets fire to the house.
She explains that they're now free to return to the sea together. Mary is shocked, but also professes that Anne is "so hot" in that moment. They share a hug, while Stede and Blackbeard try to warn them to leave the burning house. Ignored, Stede and Blackbeard end up leaving the house together.
Fanon[]
Despite only appearing in one episode, the ship between Anne and Mary was praised by the fandom. Fans were glad to see older queer characters in a long-term relationship with one another, as somewhat of a contrast to Stede and Blackbeard's new relationship. Fans also enjoyed their over the top nature, and violent tendencies. There is also historical evidence that the real life counterparts of Anne and Mary were lovers for some period of time, which caused even more love and respect for the ship.
Due to the general lack of female characters in the show, AnneMary is the most popular femslash ship on AO3. It currently has over 115 works in the Our Flag Means Death fandom, with another 20 or so works spread out across other fandoms; Black Sails, Assassin's Creed, and RPF.
