Samatoki thinking of Nemu

Samatoki thinks of switching sides after offered a better place for Nemu

Samatoki and Nemu are the Aohitsugi siblings, with Samatoki being Nemu’s older brother. Samatoki is described as highly protective and overbearing towards Nemu, always making sure she’s safe and sound. Samatoki and Nemu were raised by their abusive father whom was murdered by their mother before she ended her own life. Since then, Samatoki raised Nemu on his own and became a criminal in order to protect her and provide money, going through hell and back for Nemu’s sake, only focused on her wellbeing, shown when he was willing to join sides with his enemies when they offered to get a better place for Nemu to live at.

He describes Nemu as being so adorable she has to be protected. Despite hating Samatoki’s impulsive aggression, Nemu understands that he only cares for her, though she’s unafraid to scold him. She often tagged along with Mad Comic Dialogue to keep a watch on Samatoki to make sure he isn’t overly violent. Nemu is aware of the effort he’s put to give her a good life, which motivates her to encourage Jiro and Saburo that their older brother feels the same. Despite their mutual care, they have many differences, such as Samatoki being a violent and provocative individual while Nemu prefers peace and unity. Nemu is also implied to have come to terms with her mother’s death, while Samatoki is still burdened by their past. Nemu in fact used their mother’s protective charm to make matching bracelets in memory, giving one to Samatoki which he wears to the present day.

Since the very start, Samatoki always defended her and displayed his love for her, always making sure she’ll be safe. Nemu appreciates her brother’s kindness and love for her but is sometimes annoyed or irritated. Samatoki always asks Nemu classic questions, such as if she’s going out to meet a boy and declaring he’ll make whoever Nemu is with wish they were never born. In the TDD manga, Samatoki always encourages Nemu to choose what sort of life she wants to lead. Samatoki and Nemu enjoy spending time together, and Samatoki often cooks up banquets for her, especially when it’s a special occasion. Samatoki puts aside his fiery and impulsive tendencies when Nemu asks him to calm down or shut up.

Samatoki is often made fun of for being so overprotective, crudely called a siscon by Ichiro and accused of being obsessed with her. In the past, Sasara and Kuko noticed Samatoki’s soft spot for Nemu, as they frequently described Samatoki as being “whipped” for Nemu. Sasara and Kuko also made fun of Samatoki by suggesting that Nemu has a crush on Ichiro, resulting in his rage and threatening to kill them. When Nemu tries cooking Ichiro’s favorite food for Samatoki, Samatoki ends up seething as he realized he was used as a practice for the Yamadas. Samatoki ends up inadvertently expressing his jealousy whenever Nemu talks to Ichiro for too long, which is much noticed by his teammates. Nevertheless, Samatoki made it his mission to keep Nemu out of harm’s way. This is the very tool used by the Part of Words and Stairway to Heaven where they kidnap Nemu to truly provoke Samatoki in his rawest and furious form.

Whenever Nemu is kidnapped, Samatoki always lowers his aggressive and furious side when his enemies threaten to hurt her. In the Stairway to Heaven Mozuku incident, Samatoki gladly stabs his eardrums with drumsticks as it meant he'd safely bring back Nemu. Afterwards, he gets overly violent with the perpetrators, much to Nemu's horror.

After Nemu was hypnotized by Ramuda’s clone, she was kidnapped by the Party of Words and used once again as bait. Samatoki, unaware it was an experiment, fought in a battle against Ichiro in order to save Nemu. He ruthlessly knocked Ichiro down, aware his younger brothers would die and only setting his eyes on saving Nemu. Noted by many, Samatoki’s rap ability and skill is heightened when he’s angered and determined to protect Nemu. Eventually, Samatoki was absolutely heartbroken and struck by anguish after Nemu refused to go back with him and joined the Party of Words. With this, Samatoki is determined to get Nemu back and promises to make Nemu see reason, hating and blaming Ichiro for Nemu’s turn.

After Nemu’s departure, Samatoki became increasingly depressed as apartment became a mess. He frequently smoked and drank bottles and bottles of alcohol, and around this time was when the yakuza flagged him for his increasingly violent nature. Around this period, Samatoki went around and beat up random yakuza and citizens alike to take out his anger, anguished every time he thought back on Nemu’s last words, “I never want to see your face again.”

Samatoki's care for Nemu reaches even to his daily tasks, as he takes the role of being an older brother seriously, an example being when he goes to stop a robber who took a bystander's younger sister as a hostage. His ideals could be summarized as when Samatoki snaps at the bystander saying, "You're her older brother, so act like it." before staring fondly at the siblings reuniting.

On top of that, when Sasara begs Samatoki to do a comedy routine with him, he finds no success, so he lies saying he wants to make his younger sister smile with the comedy routine. Sasara expects this attempt to fail, but he gets scared after Samatoki switches up and fervently agrees and calls Sasara the best big brother. After that, Samatoki watched 100 comedy skit videos and practiced them over and over in a single night and was severely into their skits after believing the lie so that he could help Sasara’s faked younger sister. Later, Sasara asks why he’s so gung-ho about their comedy routine, and Samatoki bashfully explains he has a younger sister of his own, sharing that he started taking care of her on his own after their parents died. Sasara realized he messed up after hearing the story and after confessing he was lying, and a result he got comedically beaten by a furious Samatoki.

Reunion[]

The Party of Words heads to arrest Samatoki, with Nemu leading the unit. Samatoki is heartbroken to see Nemu after years, begging her once more to explain what happened as he angrily attempts to talk to her. Nemu refutes all his words continually, telling Jyuto and Rio to back off as she explains she can't stand the fact Samatoki still exists.

Nemu starts to cry

Nemu cries from Samatoki's words

However, Samatoki asks Nemu why she isn't wearing the charm bracelet she made for him years ago, and to this her brainwashing begins to fade slightly. She retorts that she has no recollection of any charms, but Samatoki adds that he knows Nemu isn't acting herself. Samatoki explains why he's so sure of her change, pointing out how she's crying. Nemu finds this odd, confused why she's unable to stop her tears, and Samatoki explains that his status as her older brother will never change as long as they live.

Samatoki tries to snap Nemu out of it

Samatoki tries to snap Nemu out of it

Samatoki grabs her arm and tries to snap her out of her trance, but she slaps him away and yells that his voice is doing things to her head. As they engage in a battle, Samatoki declares he'll bring back Nemu no matter what, and as she begins to groan in pain from the mind hacking, Samatoki worries and tries to help her.

Nemu screams at him to shut up, barely slipping from the brainwashing as she starts to rap and knock Samatoki down. Though, Samatoki is determined and raps back into verse, rendering her on the ground and slowly slipping free. Samatoki rushes to her side and tries to help her, and Nemu begins to switch from her normal self to her mindhacked version. Nemu begins to cry that she missed Samatoki so much, but she changes once more and knocks Samatoki back and explain she isn't sure why, but that she needs to defeat him no matter what.

After Nemu is called back by Ichijiku and walks off, and Samatoki quickly follows after her. He says he doesn't care what horrible things she says about him, and that he only wants her to remember that he's her older brother, and that he'd do anything for her. Nemu is affected by these words before rushing off.

Fanon[]

This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.

Samatoki and Nemu’s relationship is one of the most popular sibling dynamics within the fandom, as many fans enjoy the classic protective older brother trope and how it plays a big theme in the grand scheme of the plot. The romantic pairing between them is unpopular since the two are siblings. Mainly, fan works depict Samatoki’s anguish after Nemu left him and play into the theme of MTC vs. the Party of Words.
