Aragorn and Arwen first met when he was twenty-one years of age, Arwen having been alive for over 2500 years by that point. Aragorn, wandering in Rivendell, happened upon Arwen, whom he had never before been told of. Having been singing of Arwen’s ancestor Luthien, whom she apparently greatly resembled, Aragorn briefly believed her to be a vision of that legendary maiden. Arwen corrected his mistake, and explained that she had lived for many years among her mother’s kin in Lothlorien.
Though humbled by the revelation of Arwen’s lofty lineage, Aragorn nonetheless fell in love with her. Arwen did not initially return his feelings, and her father Elrond warned Aragorn that even if she ever did, Elrond would bless their union only if Aragorn became king of both Arnor and Gondor. Aragorn thus departed into the wild and spent nearly thirty years traveling and aiding the cause of the Free Peoples. Eventually he came to Lothlorien, where Arwen was once again dwelling.
Seeing Aragorn come to full stature and great nobility, Arwen’s heart turned to him. They spent some months together in Lothlorien, and pledged themselves to each other. In doing this, Aragorn warned Arwen that she must be prepared to sacrifice the immortality that might otherwise be hers. Arwen accepted this, and the two parted for a time.
Bilbo Baggins, who befriended Aragorn at some point, became aware of the affection that Aragorn and Arwen shared. This led him to question Aragorn’s absence from a feast held in honor of his nephew Frodo, at which Arwen was present. Aragorn acknowledged that he had been aware of this, but had been occupied with other matters. However, he afterwards visited with Arwen in Rivendell’s Hall of Fire.
When Aragorn and the rest of the Fellowship of the Ring were ready to depart from Lothlorien, Arwen’s grandmother Galadriel asked whether there was any gift he would ask of her. In a veiled reference to Arwen, Aragorn noted that Arwen’s lengthy visits to her grandmother had in effect made Galadriel guardian of the only “treasure” in which he had any interest. However, he also noted that, even if Galadriel wished to do so, it was not within her power to “give” Arwen to him. Galadriel acknowledged this, and then revealed that Arwen had left a gift for him in the event he once again passed through Lothlorien. This proved to be the Elfstone, an heirloom of Galadriel’s line, and the namesake of Aragorn’s destined royal title of Elessar.
It was later learned that Arwen had long been preparing another gift for her beloved. This was a standard bearing the ancient tokens of his royal lineage, fashioned with the most precious materials in Middle-earth. Arwen eventually delivered it to Halbarad of the Grey Company, who brought it in turn to Aragorn. Arwen also gave Halbarad a message for Aragorn, and through it Aragorn was able to identify the nature of her gift.
With Sauron’s defeat, Arwen and Aragorn were at last able to wed. Arwen traveled to Gondor, where she became Queen of Men and Elves and ruled alongside Aragorn. Bilbo was invited to their wedding, but due to his great age and the destruction of the One Ring he was unable to make the journey. Arwen explained this to Frodo, and in token of the part he had played in Aragorn and Arwen’s happiness, offered to him her place aboard the ship that would bear her father Elrond out of Middle-earth.
Arwen and Aragorn would have one son, Eldarion, and several daughters. When Aragorn was 210, having been married to Arwen for over 120 years, he stepped down from the throne and prepared to exercise his power as a Numenorean to give up his life before death claimed him. Despite the long years of foreknowledge of this eventuality, Arwen found herself unprepared for the grim reality. She found that she could at last understand those Men who, in fear of death, had turned to evil and folly.
Though he could offer his wife little comfort, Aragorn was brave in the face of his end. He told Arwen that she had the choice to die as he was about to, or to journey to the Undying Lands and be forever sundered from him. However, Arwen responded that the latter option had long since been lost to her by her choice to be with him. With Aragorn’s death, a heartbroken Arwen found no joy left in her life. She bid farewell to her children, returned to a now desolate Lothlorien, and soon joined her husband in death.
