Ariadnysus is the het ship between Ariadne and Dionysus from Greek Mythology.
Canon[]
Ariadne was a princess of Crete, daughter of King Minos, she had fallen for Theseus and assisted him in slaying the Minotaur. But after Theseus took her with him on his ship to elope, Ariadne suddenly woke up abandoned on the island Naxos with Theseus nowhere to be seen. That is where Dionysus finds her, charmed by her beauty, he offers to take her with him to Mount Olympus. Ariadne reluctantly agrees, though mostly out of urgency as some versions have her not only stranded, but mortally wounded when Dionysus finds her. Thus, Ariadne ended up on Olympus, with Dionysus declaring her his wife. He takes her tiara, the one thing tethering her to the mortal realm, and throws it into the sky. There they witness the headdress turn into the constellation Corona Borealis, a symbol for their union. Ariadne was never stated to have been unfaithful to Dionysus, some sources claim that Dionysus stopped having lovers because he saw how hurt Ariadne was.
A later version claims that Dionysus visited the sleeping Theseus in his dreams, he was actually the one who persuaded him to leave Ariadne. He supposedly justified it by claiming that Ariadne was prophesied to become his wife, thus asking Theseus to step down so he could marry her.
Dionysus taking Ariadne with him to Olympus is often interpreted as following her death. In The Odyssey it is mentioned that after Theseus took her away, Artemis killed Ariadne on the island Dia (sometimes conflated with Naxos) with Dionysus as witness. One scholar of the original Odyssey text outright claimed that Dionysus is indirectly responsible for Ariadne's death, as he was angered by Theseus making love to her on sacred grounds and informed Artemis of it, causing the goddess to kill Ariadne. Another version has her die by her own hand after Theseus abandoned her, with Dionysus venturing to the Underworld to retrieve her and his mother Semele, then marrying Ariadne after turning her and Semele into goddesses.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians[]
Dionysus is interpreted as hostile towards so-called "heroes" in this continuity, with The Titan's Curse having him interrupt Percy's quest to tell him how he met Ariadne. His hatred of heroes started with Theseus as Dionysus deeply sympathized with Ariadne and couldn't fathom why a man could be so cruel to her and still call himself a "hero". Percy later sees Ariadne by Dionysus' side during the celebrations, with them looking genuinely happy together, which Percy notes is a rarity for Dionysus.
Hades[]
In the first game, there's a chance that Dionysus would talk about Ariadne after Zagreus had fought Theseus. However, he never clarifies whether they're married in this continuity or just dating.
Kaos[]
Though the series clearly set everything up for Ariadne and Dionysus to meet, they haven't done so during the events of the first season.
Fanon[]
Ariadnysus is a very popular romance in Greek Mythology circles, though it doesn't get as much attention as other pairings. Notably, fans of BBC's Atlantis series sometimes pair its version of Ariadne with Dionysus, even though he is only mentioned in that series.
Many Kaos fans had also immediately started writing fix fics allowing them to meet with the news that the series might not get a second season.
