"The Song Burning in the Embers" Full Animated Short - Genshin Impact -GenshinImpact
Clervie is first shown in the "The Song Burning in the Embers" animated short about Arlecchino’s backstory. She is a young girl who is ordered by the current Knave to check up on a young Arlecchino (then known as Peruere) who is missing from storytime. Clervie offers cake to a young Peruere who is mourning her spider’s death. Peruere accepts, though mentions that spiders don’t eat cake.
Some time later, Peruere is shown bandaging Clervie’s wounds, asking if it’s normal for mothers to fight with their daughters. Clervie opens a window to look at the night sky, saying how she would like to see the auroras of Snezhnaya with Peruere when they’re both grown up one day.
The next scene, Clervie is shown to have been stabbed by Peruere. Clervie apologizes to Peruere, then thanks her, before dying. After that, Peruere confronts the Knave, who is tending to a dying Lumidouce Bell plant. The Knave comments about how she should’ve snipped the plant long ago (a reference to Clervie, since Clervie would always well a Lumidouce Bell necklace). Peruere is angered by this and attacks the Knave, but is overpowered. While she is down however, Peruere sees a wilted Lumidouce Bell plant next to her, and remembering Clervie, she uses her curse’s powers to kill the Knave.
Clervie is revealed to be Arlecchino’s childhood best friend in "Arlecchino’s Story Quest". They met when they were 6 years old and despite their vastly different personalities, they became fast friends due to both of them knowing the “truth” about the House of the Hearth. After 10 years of trying and failing to escape the House, however, Clervie decides that the only freedom she truly has is the freedom to choose when to die, and has Peruere kill her during a duel.
Arlecchino’s Story Quest centers around a young Clervie that is haunting the House of the Hearth. This young Clervie, at first assumed to be a spirit, is actually an afterimage of Clervie born from Arlecchino’s flames that Arlecchino calls “Clervie’s shadow.” It is implied that Arlecchino has tried talking to this young Clervie multiple times before, but to no avail, as Clervie’s shadow’s memories reset over time.
Clervie’s shadow talks about how the only person in the House of the Hearth that she trusts is her best friend, “Perrie,” a nickname for Peruere. Her wandering NPC model when she is first encountered walks around with a speech bubble that says, “Perrie? Huh... Looks like she's not here either...” When she and Arlecchino finally meet again in the story quest, Clervie’s shadow is happy to see who Peruere grew up to be.
Arlecchino expresses sadness when Clervie’s shadow is finally gone. She mentions how she wanted to tell Clervie’s shadow that the auroras of Snezhnaya were as beautiful as the ones in the pictures - a reference to Clervie’s past wish for her and a young Peruere.
Quotes[]
- “I heard that in Snezhnaya, colored light dances in the sky at night... When we're grown... Shall we go see it together?”
- — Clervie to Arlecchino in "The Song Burning in the Embers"
- “You will be... a great "King." I'm sorry... ...Thank you.”
- — Clervie to Arlecchino in "The Song Burning in the Embers"
- “You never stopped trying to defy fate. At first, no one believed you. You could only vent your frustrations to the moon. In fact, you often sought comfort in the night sky. You wanted to see the aurora, so one night, we promised each other we would go to Snezhnaya to see it together.”
- — Arlecchino to Clervie in "Ignis Purgatorius Chapter"
- “Still, seeing who you grew up to be... Makes me really happy, Peruere.”
- — Clervie to Arlecchino in "Ignis Purgatorius Chapter"
- “May we meet again someday.”
- — Arlecchino to Clervie in "Ignis Purgatorius Chapter"
- “Even without the corrosion, this flame brought her other troubles. Those rendered ash by these fires would leave "afterimages." […] Of course, these were hardly as special as "Clervie's shadow," but they would still appear by Arlecchino's side, driving the clamor away and buying her a moment's respite.”

Fanon[]
Arlevie is a ship that emerged with rapid popularity after Arlecchino's animated short "The Song Burning in the Embers" was released and has grown to become one of the most popular Arlecchino ships. Fans were drawn in by the "doomed yuri" aspect of the ship, with Clervie, who was revealed to be the childhood best friend of Arlecchino, dying in the latter's arms. Fans also like how close the bond the two had was, and how Clervie's death motivated a young Peruere to finally defeat Crucabena, the former Knave.
Fans also enjoy the "Opposites Attract" dynamic of the pairing, with the contrasting personalities of a stoic and aloof Arlecchino and a cheerful and outgoing Clervie. After the release of Arlecchino's Story Quest, fans were pleased to learn that Arlecchino does not like wearing dresses whilst Clervie does, as another affirmation of the "Opposites Attract" trope.
Fans were also quick to point out the difference in Arlecchino's tone when she finally talks to Clervie's shadow. She usually sounds cold and blunt, but after saying goodbye to Clervie's shadow, she is noticed to speak in a softer, sadder tone and more fondly while recalling her past promise with Clervie. Fans speculate that despite knowing about the existence of Clervie's shadow for years, Arlecchino avoided confronting and getting rid of Clervie's shadow until the end of her story quest because she was not ready to say goodbye to her until then.
Many fanarts were created based on the ship's tragic theme, particularly the scenes when Clervie dies in Peruere's arms and when Arlecchino says goodbye to Clervie's shadow. Some fanarts that have gained massive popularity in the fandom portray an alternate timeline in which Clervie never died and lives happily with Arlecchino, both grown up. In both fanarts and fanfictions, a popular headcanon for AUs in which Clervie lives is for her to possess either an Anemo vision (because she longed for freedom) or a Hydro vision (to parallel Arlecchino's Pyro vision) and to be a healer.
For Genshin Impact’s HoYoFair 2024 “Flame Fusion Music and Art Festival,” the two showed up briefly in the fan animation “Lifeline” with Clervie portrayed as a young adult wearing a white dress with black-diamond shapes and a red underskirt, matching Arlecchino’s outfit. Their brief appearance together gained immense attention, and fans of the ship joked that they were getting married.[1]
Arlevie currently has 90+ works on AO3.

Trivia[]
- A young Clervie is briefly shown when several children run past Arlecchino in her Character Demo.
- In the Arlecchino weekly boss's domain, as Arlecchino does her idle animation, three birds can be seen by Arlecchino's side, running around her legs, representing Lyney, Lynette and Freminet, whilst a fourth bird watches from up on the rock, representing Clervie.
- Additionally, after starting the battle the three birds vanish from Arlecchino's side, however the fourth bird stays there the entire time.
- In Arlecchino’s voiceline about Lyney, she mentions how long ago, she had no answer when Clervie once asked her what a “real home” looked like, but perhaps Lyney will have a proper answer for her one day.
