Canon[]

In Episode 2 of Season 3, "Paul Lynde to Block," Frank meets Chet for the first time. Throughout the episode, the two bond over their shared military experience in Korea. Frank invites Chet and his wife, Nguyen-Nguyen, to the drive-in movies with him to avoid his wife. During the movie, Frank goes to get Sue a pizza but ends up alone with Chet. In their conversation, Frank somewhat vents about his situation with Sue.

In Season 3, Episode 4, "Mr. Murphy's Wild Ride," there are several interactions between Chet and Frank, which have led some to speculate that Frank may have a crush on Chet due to the line, “If I didn’t go to hell for loving a man, I’ll kiss you.” In this episode, Chet helps Frank obtain some lumber from an army base to build his baby's room. They drink beer together at the base, and Chet even fulfills Frank's dream by taking him on a fighter jet. However, Chet plays a prank on Frank in this episode by pretending that the jet has run out of fuel and is about to crash.

In Season 3, Episode 5, "Battle of the Sexes," Chet visits Frank's house to plan their baby's room, but becomes jealous when other people are interacting with Chet. Frank refers to the night as a "Chet and him kind of night." In this episode, Sue, Frank's wife, refers to Chet as "Frank's boyfriend" and makes a similar comment in Season 3, Episode 6, "Punch Drunk." She sarcastically tells Frank to "go to make-out mountain" with Chet as an insult.

Throughout the season, Chet reveals his true sadistic nature by building a baby's room for Frank, only to tear it down later due to the lack of a permit. Their final interaction is in Season 3, Episode 9, "Frank the Father," when Frank visits Chet in the hospital after being poisoned by his wife. Chet seems genuinely concerned, asking Frank to hold his hand, but at the last moment, he insults him with a homophobic slur.

Fanon[]

Army Dreamers is a popular slash ship in the F is for Family fandom, with the ship name inspired by Kate Bush's song due to Frank and Chet's shared military experience.

Many fans believe that Frank Murphy may be bisexual because of his interactions with Chet in Season 3, and it's a common head canon within the fandom. It is also a common head canon that Chet is a closeted gay man. This may be attributed to Chet's unusual interactions with women and the homophobic slur he uses towards Frank in their final conversation. There are differing opinions among fans about this interpretation; some believe that Chet may be dealing with internal homophobia, while others disagree.

The "Army Dreamers" ship is viewed as an "enemies to lovers" trope within the F is for Family fandom, given Chet's antagonistic behavior later in the season. Despite the resurgence of the fandom in 2025 and its newfound cult following, many still believe that Frank had romantic feelings for Chet due to his attachment and neediness. Frank's bisexuality is often used for comedic effect in the series.

While it is not explicitly confirmed, the third season of F is for Family hints at Frank's potential bisexuality. Unfortunately, the ship lacks an abundance of fan content due to the smaller size of the fandom. Army Dreamers is a niche pairing due to F is for Family being niche, yet it remains one of the most popular among fans.
