The Adventure of the Great Departure[]

In the actual case itself, it's revealed that the two were both at a 'high class establishment' restaurant, talking about Asougi and his government-funded trip to Britain to study the law.

The case's crime involved Naruhodou being framed for a murder that he didn't commit. Asougi took up his defense, albeit only three days after Naruhodou was arrested and had to quickly notify the change of attorney. During the prologue, a bailiff calls Naruhodou a murderer but was quickly shut up by Asougi, telling the bailiff that he should "stem the flow of garbage coming from his mouth" and that he had no rights to call Naruhodou a murderer, since he hasn't been proven guilty. After the bailiff backs off, Asougi tells Naruhodou that he believes in him. Naruhodou's inner monologue about Asougi - which he tends to blurt out verbally, calls Kazuma his best friend and that despite being the same age and same university year, Naruhodou thinks that they're completely different.

“This is my best friend, Kazuma Asougi. He's a second year student just like me. But to be frank, he and I are worlds apart. He's the pride and joy of our university.”
— Naruhodou

But soon things take a sharp turn when Asougi's mentor, Mikotoba asks him if he's Asougi's best friend and then tells him that Asougi must not stand in today's trial. Telling him that Asougi's trip to Britain would be cancelled if he loses the trial today, Naruhodou reacts in shock and wonders why Asougi would take the risk to defend him. When the trial finally started, Naruhodou acted as his own defense attorney, much to Asougi's dismay.

“I'm disappointed. You think that, if I was your attorney, we would lose this trial.”
— Asougi to Naruhodou
“N-No! Absolutely not. But.. If there was even a chance that you'd.. because of me.. ”
— Naruhodou to Asougi

Throughout the trial, Asougi stands by his side and acts as his aid. All the while displaying the close friendship between the two, with the frequent sarcastic jokes that Asougi make about Naruhodou such as if Naruhodou made another mistake in front of the court and embarrass him, Asougi would pull out his katana and "slice his head off" in a threatening joking manner. This behavior present throughout the entire trial - whether or not the player gets them wrong so that it demonstrates their strong, best-friend relationship.

Nearing the end of the trial, when the true culprit revealed themselves in court, the leading prosecutor says that he's been outwitted by an amateur student. Asougi then spoke up, telling the prosecutor: "The prideful men of old will be toppled by the younger generation. A hundred generations may pass, but your descendants will never rival those of this man." referring to Ryuunosuke & Phoenix. Naruhodou's final verdict was Not Guilty, and the first one to congratulate him in the court lobby was none other than his best friend, with Naruhodou thanking Asougi. Later on, Naruhodou tells his best friend, Asougi that he would be the greatest attorney in the world. Asougi soon shuts him down, telling him that maybe Naruhodou was the one meant to be an attorney all along. Not long later, Asougi tells him that he has a heartfelt request for him, but is quickly interrupted.

The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band[]

Asougi sneaks in Naruhodou with him to the ship that he's taking to Britain, using a large suitcase and hid his best friend as a stowaway. What he didn't know was, he would soon be accused of taking Asougi's life while hiding in the very same cabin as his best friend. Prior to his death, when Naruhodou asks him about why he went so far as to bring him along, Asougi tells him once again that he has a talent for being an attorney, and that he had a selfish reason for going through with the plan. Asougi tells him that there is something he must absolutely do, and that he would be grateful if Naruhodou would see that through with him in the very end In the investigation, he meets Asougi's legal assistant Susato and a detective named Sherlock whom help him gather clues about Asougi's sudden death. In the near end of the investigation, it's revealed that Asougi's final moments was thinking about talking to Naruhodou inside the wardrobe, but was misinterpreted by the culprit. At the very end of the case, Sherlock persuades Naruhodou to take Asougi's role as an attorney, and Susato gives the sword of the Asougi family to Naruhodou, saying "Kazuma would wish for this as well."

The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story[]

Naruhodou tells his own experiences of being a defendant to his client, telling the story about the murder case in The Adventure of the Great Departure, saying that he had convinced himself none would believe him, but there was one man that took up his defense no matter what. Even though Asougi had took up his defense, he still thought deep down that maybe even Asougi suspected him but was proven wrong. Asougi really believed that he was innocent. It was then when Naruhodou learned to place his trust into others so that they trust him.

“Naruhodou, is there anyone that trusts you more than me? Leave it to me, all you have to do is trust me.”
— Asougi
“I was so happy, that I started crying.”
— Naruhodou, to Asougi

The Great Departed Soul[]

Whilst visiting the leading prosecutor Barok van Zieks for the case, Naruhodou notices a man that he's never seen before whom is van Zieks' hooded disciple who wore a mask and didn't speak a single word. When he approached the masked man with a greeting, he didn't get a reply but Naruhodou states that even though its their first time meeting each other, he couldn't help but feel like they've met before and even goes as far as to say that he 'knows this man.'

When both Naruhodou and Susato face van Zieks and his disciple by his side, Susato states that she has a strong feeling it's Asougi and that he was alive all along, which Naruhodou replied to by saying that they can't get any information out of him since the masked disciple had lost all of his memories.

Reunited[]

“Carrying this with me made me feel like you were always watching over me.”
— Naruhodou, talking about the Karma katana.

After the end of the trial for The Return of the Great Departed Soul, when van Zieks decided to reveal the identity of a vital point in the case, a wax statue of The Professor who was brought up in the case - was revealed to be Kazuma Asougi's father. After Kazuma had started to regain his memories due to the statue, Naruhodou immediately recognized Asougi as soon as he took off the mask. For the past year that he thought his best friend was dead, and now he's standing right in front of him. Asougi thanked him and Susato for all the work they've done, and for taking care of his katana.

When van Zieks got arrested under suspicion of murder, Naruhodou soon learned that the appointed prosecutor for his case was Kazuma Asougi. Shocked by the news, Naruhodou wonders worriedly if Asougi standing in court only after 8 days of regaining his memory is alright. Asougi thanked him for what Naruhodou did for him, saying: "You crossed the ocean to this place, holding my duty in your heart. And you fulfilled that duty magnificently." and soon told him that he wanted Naruhodou to watch him complete his mission, right in front of him seated in the defense's bench.

Fanon[]

This ship is the most popular ship in The Great Ace Attorney, although due to Dai Gyakuten Saiban / The Great Ace Attorney not having an official localization for several years, the fanbase & fandom is quite smaller compared to the main Ace Attorney line due to the game being exclusive to Japan for so long.

It has the most content out of any DGS ship. Many people compare the two to NaruMitsu, due to their similarities in their stories and that both can be classified under Friends to Rivals to Lovers. Most people ship them due to the very first case of the game, along with the second case.
