The Sound and the Fury[]
The Youths Who Chase Dreams[]
The Astral Express Crew check in to The Reverie hotel and run into trouble checking in. When they responded to The Family's invitation, Stelle wasn't yet a member of the crew so she isn't on the list of invited guests. Aventurine, who right behind them in line, intervenes trying to speed things up for his turn since time is money to someone important like him. Himeko is able to convince him to use his status to vouch for Stelle by suggesting he forge a new friendship with the crew and name dropping the Watchmaker — a mysterious unknown figure whom they both share a connection with. At first Aventurine sounds like he's not interested but quickly changes his mind when he realizes he can form a friendship with "a righteous Trailblazer like a Nameless" since "nothing is more precious than friends". He then allows the lobby clerk to check Stelle in on his account.
After Stelle talks to Robin, there's the option to talk with Aventurine again. Aventurine apologizes for any perceived slights and offers either 10,000 or 20,000 credits depending on the option the player picks. Despite Stelle's attitude towards him, he remains friendly in all his dialogue.
Stelle goes to her hotel room to find Aventurine inside. Half a system hour ago this room was previously his until he transferred it to her. He mentions how much trouble he went into booking this perfect room (A lucky block number, a lucky floor, a lucky room number) so Stelle should treasure it. Stelle is unaware that he transferred the room to her and he makes it painfully aware just how lucky she should feel for getting this extravagant room. Since Aventurine went through all that to help her, this should mean she should help him in return; all he wants from her is a chat. He goes on about how she can use her power to etch her name across the stars but then makes it clear he knows she has a Stellaron in her body and that his goal is simple and requires her power in order to "retrieve some things that belonged to [the IPC] in the first place". Stelle doesn't have to answer him right away, she can even talk it over with her colleagues if she wants to in fact he "welcome[s] that notion" because "it will also show [her] true value [to him]". He doesn't do deals where he's on the losing end and vaguely hints that he hopes she doesn't let him down.
Before Aventurine leaves, he wants to play another game to "get to know each other better" by having Stelle guess what hand the chip is hiding in; he intends to get a better grasp on her personalty and the way she does things. After he does his coin trick, he asks her to pick a hand. However it doesn't matter which she picks because the "game" has already begun, implying she has no real choice in the matter.
Acheron interrupts Aventurine's threat by asking him what he's doing in her room. Aventurine is confused but only for a moment and switches back to his friendly personality once he realizes his plan to force Stelle into a choice is thrawted. He leaves with a playful warning to be aware of "unsavoury characters" and to stay on her toes.
He leaves one of his tokens with Stelle.
Whodunit[]
Stelle is rescued by Black Swan and returns her to the person that requested Stelle: Aventurine. He assures Stelle that Black Swan hasn't betrayed her, in fact the true enemy is the Emanator Acheron — implying she's the one behind the death of Firefly. Stelle has a hard time believing him but Aventurine continues by revealing Acheron was the one who killed Ifrit, stole his invite and is pretending to be a Galaxy Ranger, painting her as someone untrustworthy and suspicious. Stelle continues to have her doubts but Aventurine doesn't give up on trying to convince her, even going as far as telling her there's a truth about Penacony that she doesn't know about. He offers to wait for her answer, but not for long.
Stelle remains stuck between believing Aventurine or not despite all the evidence he gives her regarding Acheron. She decides to talk to Black Swan again for more answers and the Memokeeper says that Aventurine is a trustworthy individual who needs Stelle for his plans. She also warns Stelle to be on guard when it comes to Aventurine, he's someone who will "go to extreme lengths to ensure his advantage". Despite their shared mistrust of Aventurine, Black Swan thinks it's for the greater good to learn of the "truth" from him.
Stelle chooses to learn the truth and talks to Aventurine who is happy to lead the way down the hall to get to the said "truth". In a similar room as the one in reality, Aventurine reveals the "truth" to Stelle — Robin's dead body.
Cat Among Pigeons[]
The Devil in Velvet[]
The act starts off right after the cliffhanger of the previous chapter — in front of Robin's dead body, sitting upright in one of the dreampools. Stelle is shocked and seems to be having a hard time believing the sight in front of her. Aventurine is sure to clear his name; the first thing out of his mouth being an alibi and reassurance of his innocence by invoking the mention of The Family who can testify for him. The second thing out of his mouth is an explanation of how Robin's body is there in the dreamscape, courtesy of technology owned by the IPC: a basic light cone. Aventurine continues to sow the seeds of doubt against Acheron, going on about how much thought The Family puts into the defense of the dreamscape and how much of an anomaly the Emanator's presence in the dreamscape is. Stelle is having trouble taking all this in but Aventurine reassures her he's willing to wait and that building trust always takes time. He warns her that everyone has their own agenda and that Stelle should keep her distance from Acheron. Black Swan chimes in that perhaps an even deeper conspiracy is brewing, implicating Aventurine behind this conspiracy, but Aventurine changes the subject by letting her know their deal is finished. After Black Swan confirms the light cone is untampered with, Aventurine reveals his reason for roping in Stelle: he wants to personally team up with the Astral Express. He reassures her that he's not after the legacy and he's simply there to do his job of retrieving lost property for the IPC, it's just The Family makes it difficult. They won't return his calls or sit down for negotiations so now he needs Stelle's help to uncover the truth about "Death" in Penacony. He even goes as far to appeal to her sense of justice by telling Stelle they can get justice for Robin in the process. The plan is simple: use The Family's trust in The Nameless to their advantage. All Stelle has to do is talk things over with her group and Himeko should be able to figure something out, after all she's the one who will understand the value of their deal. Aventurine hands Stelle his contact information and leaves her with 50,000 credits before sauntering off. Despite a friendly goodbye and generous gift, Stelle still feels like something is off with Aventurine.
Stelle talks it over with Black Swan who warns her that working with him is dangerous. In one of the dialogue options Stelle asks if she can roll a die to let it decide for her and Black Swan comments that leaving it up to fate like that is "just like how that gambler thinks".
Stelle meets up with The Astral Express crew at Golden Hour to catch up on what they found out. When Aventurine comes up in their conversation, everyone agrees that he's suspicious. While they agree The Family holds no ill-will towards them, Himeko turns to Welt for his opinion on Aventurine; he notes that while the IPC envoy is complex and is seemingly running circles around them, it's not a bad idea to have allies in these uncertain times since their interests align. March is willing to keep an eye on him since Stelle has been getting "bullied" since they've arrived; she's more than happy to use him and turn the tables on him if things don't work out.
Now with a plan in place, Himeko asks Stelle to text back Aventurine their answer to his offer to team up. Aventurine is happy to hear of her favorable response and sends her 200,000 credits for it.
Lost Generation[]
Stelle tells The Astral Express crew that Aventurine is happy with the outcome. She and Himeko discuss what exactly Aventurine is planning to do in order to recapture Penacony for the IPC and Stelle brings up the Astral Express as one of his weapon of choice for bringing down The Family. Himeko considers that possibility as well, believing Aventurine to respect Stelle since he sought her out a few times already and continuously probes her for her intentions. However that doesn't stop Himeko from warning her about Aventurine; he's a born gambler skilled at reading others and good at determining the right moment to strike so they need to be careful when dealing with him. Welt brings up that something concerns him about Aventurine. The way he accuses Acheron without any evidence of her connection to the Memory Zone Meme that killed Firefly, and the reason why he's "stalking her", only makes him more suspicious of Aventurine in his eyes. He believes the gambler is trying to create animosity towards Acheron to make the situation even more volatile and that gaining their trust was never his goal. He warns Stelle to not place all her trust in Aventurine, they cannot afford to be manipulated by him.
When the Sacred Ginmill Closes[]
The Astral Express crew runs into Topaz in The Reverie's hotel lobby in reality. The conversation quickly turns to Aventurine and Topaz reveals just how desperate her coworker is to team up with someone in the Dreamscape as the IPC can't back him up there.
A Walk Among the Tombstones[]
Proven to not be a danger to the crew, Acheron introduces herself to the group. Welt declares she's no threat to them and that Aventurine's prior accusations were based on his own subjectivity. He suggests confronting Aventurine for an explanation, as he believes the gambler's actions must have some deeper meaning to them. Welt even suspects that Aventurine may have been aware of Penacony's secret from the very beginning, his plan of using the Astral Express imperative to unveiling said secret. Worried Aventurine would have them do something unexpected and that the state of affairs "is significantly more intricate than that of Belobog and the Xianzhou", he concludes that having Acheron as an extra ally is a good idea. Everyone is ready to head out, but they're unsure where to start looking for Aventurine. Himeko reassures them that he'll be the one to get them to come to him, which turns out to be true when Aventurine's voice blasts throughout the Dreamscape telling people to show up to Clock Studios's Theme Park for a show.
After the gang shows up to the location, and March points out how flashy Aventurine is being, they notice the place is empty. Thankfully the Hounds drove out the visitors, leaving just the crew and Aventurine. As they walk towards the stage, Aventurine' voice welcomes them to the show. He calls them out for being late and bringing along Archeon, an uninvited guest. Himeko asks for the gambler to come out of hiding, which he does, and he introduces Stelle as the guest of honor. Welt tries to convince Aventurine that Stelle is unconnected to the string of murders but Aventurine disagrees, after all she was the one who saw all three murders so naturally that means she's key to proving The Family's promise of no death in the Dreamscape is "nothing but a sham". Himeko is confused and asks what he means by three murders — only Robin and Firefly have been murdered. Aventurine unveil's his true plan: he'll create the third murder by detonating the Stellaron inside Stelle leading him to becoming the IPC fleet's navigator. Acheron tries calling his bluff but Aventurine is sure, due to his luck, that he'll come out victorious. The lights dim down, alerting the group and causing them to draw out their weapons; as soon as Aventurine's face appears on the giant screen Stelle's lance points straight at him and lets out an angry growl. Aventurine laughs before he casts his dice, the last one hitting Stelle's shoe. He puts up his cornerstone as his bet for this gamble, descending from his spot on top of the monitor already transformed and ready to engage in a fight with the group.
Stelle distracts him with an attack, in order to get Himeko's shot to pierce him from above, but Aventurine's patience is reaching its limit so he readies his tokens to rain down on everyone. He goads Acheron one last time to "match his wager" and it works; his real plan all along was to threaten to use Stelle as a bomb to get Acheron, an Emanator, to stop him by cutting a path to the real layer of "death" in Penacony.
In the black hole space he reveals his threat of detonating the Stellaron inside of Stelle was a bluff, he doesn't have that sort of power even with his broken cornerstone.
Later Stelle receives a scheduled text from Aventurine telling her goodbye and wishing her well on her journey. However she can't reply since he's out of the service area.
In Our Time[]
Small Town Grotesque[]
Before setting off to explore Dreamflux Reef, Stelle stops to talk with Welt. When discussing the slash from Acheron's blade, Welt reveals that had Aventurine not had powers originating from the path of Preservation then the entire Dreamscape would have been affected by Acheron's powerful slash. Welt reassures Stelle that even if she didn't have the Stellaron in her body, Aventurine would have still found a way to accomplish his goals.
The Public Enemy[]
Sunday and Robin offer their help in trying to convince The Family to let the Astral Express crew seal the Stellaron and Welt gathers everyone to come up with a plan. Confronting the Dreammaster, aka the head of The Family, would prove to be a dangerous affair so they'll need to make some preparations. Robin seems like a trustworthy ally but something feels off about Sunday according to Welt, who then asks Stelle to see the token Aventurine left her. As Welt expected, the "token" left by the IPC envoy happens to be a tiny transmitter. He speculates that its intended use is to either track or keep in contact with Stelle if needed. Luckily, the situation at hand could use this device to their advantage. March is confused and asks Welt what the transmitter is gonna to do to help them in their current predicament, after all Aventurine's status is unknown after his little stunt in Clock Studios's Theme Park. Welt is sure to point out that working with the IPC means they'll be able to keep The Family in check. For example: if negotiations go south and The Family shows their true colors by going after the Stellaron, Welt can use thie transmitter to send a message to the IPC — perhaps the perfect opportunity Aventurine was hoping for. Even though they don't know whether he's dead or alive, someone else in the IPC is surely on the other end listening in. The group will use this insurance as their backup plan.
The Sun Also Rises[]
The Astral Express crew emerge victorious from their fight against Sunday and leave the Dreamscape. It turns out that the IPC wants Stelle present as an observer for their negotiations regarding Penacony so they all head to the lobby to commence everything. They meet up with the IPC and Intelligentsia Guild representatives — Aventurine, Topaz and Ratio — right away. Aventurine welcomes the group with a greeting and sincere thanks. Topaz happily announces the relinquishment of Penacony and "unconditional support of The Family's rebuilding efforts". Himeko is speechless at the sudden change in their stance. Aventurine reveals the IPC's true goal: peace and zero benefit for the organization, a price they're very willing to play. After Ratio explains the Intelligentsia Guild's plan for reconstruction in Penacony and just before the Astral Express embarks on their journey, Aventurine congrats Stelle for her hard work.
And on the Eighth Day[]
With Sunday finally defeated, Stelle returns to the Astral Express train and receives a text from Aventurine. After seeing her message, Aventurine replies letting her know he's safe and offers to play a game of dice. If the number Stelle rolls is greater than or equal to his, he'll share bits and pieces of what happened after the theme park incident. Stelle wins and Aventurine tells her that while she was unraveling the secrets of Penacony he was busy roaming the rivers of the Primordial Dreamscape. Despite being thinking he would die, he is happy to be proven wrong and alive; the Preservation's Cornerstone shielded him from the contamination of the Nihility thus shattering it to smithereens. He was able to escape death thanks to Argenti showing up and rescuing him. Now that Stelle and her group of friends were able to shine a light on the truth of Penacony, and with his IPC coworkers in charge of taking care of matters, he can finally take a vacation for all his hard work. However, ever since his entanglement with Nihility he's been having nightmares so bad that he wakes up drenched in sweat. Thankfully things are improving now that the IPC arranged for a Doctor of Chaos to give him a thorough examination. He ends his recollection of events by telling Stelle how lucky she is to get this information from him. But Stelle calls his buff and asks him if he was losing the dice rolls on purpose. Aventurine then admits that friends are few and far in-between especially in a place like Penacony so he has to make do with what he has, implying his choice to involve her in his plans wasn't anything personal. He apologizes for dragging her into said plans and thanks her, hoping he wasn't too much of a bother. He bids Stelle farewell.
After completing The Sun Also Rises trailblaze mission, Aventurine texts Stelle about a new store in Penacony that he's currently visiting. Stelle asks him if he's going to buy her something and gives her the choice between pajamas from the "Horizon" series that is designed to ease the fatigue of travelers, "Night Diamond" series gloves, or a windbreaker from the "Unmanned Flight" series.
If Stelle picks the pajama set, Aventurine wishes that her "every dream be sweet and fancy".
If Stelle picks the gloves, he hopes they make everyone around her envious.
If Stelle picks the windbreaker, he hopes she looks cool in it and reminds her to take a picture of herself in it so he can see how she looks with it on.
Or if Stelle chooses to reject him at the start, Aventurine suggests they check out the store together in person. He ends the conversation with a sticker of Pom Pom's ears in the shape of a heart seemingly sad at her outright rejection.
Farewell, Penacony[]
A Thousand Bells at Dawn[]
Before the Charmony Festival starts, Stelle decides to wander around and talk with guests to pass the time. She passes through the bar and spots Boothill threatening a hologram of Aventurine who happily banters back. Aventurine is the first to notice her as soon as Boothill simmers down from his threats. The IPC envoy puts her on the spot by calling her "a hero" and "dazzling" which causes Stelle to ask him if he's in the habit of greeting others with compliments. Aventurine replies that it's platitudes but only because they have an understanding between them.
Upon speaking with Dr. Ratio at the Terminal Interface for Divergent Universe, he comments that Stelle's performance on the Herta Space Station was adequate, adding that it was 'no wonder that gambler (Aventurine) likes you so much.'
Checking Out[]
During Stelle's time as the The Reverie's hotel lobby manager, the 3 members of the Stonehearts checkout of their individual rooms.
Radiant Feldspar Mission[]
Aventurine sends Stelle multiple gifts congratulating her on her new ship.
Fanon[]
Fans tend to like this pairing due to how much Aventurine spoils Stelle versus everyone else and how shippable their earlier scenes together were. While his intentions at the beginning were part of his plans to win over Penacony for the IPC, he always focused his attention on winning over Stelle specifically. Even though Stelle has a Stellaron needed for his plans, he should have known that also spoiling her fellow crewmates would easily win her over and keep the Astral Express's member's suspicion at bay. When pointed out to Aventurine in The Youths Who Chase Dreams that he should talk to Himeko or Welt if he wants something in exchange, he makes it clear she's the one he seeks. Stelle pointing out that there's others in her group of friends should signal to Aventurine there's others he essentially needs to bribe but he doesn't bother despite his ability to do so giving fans the impression that even if this is all for winning her over there's a part of him that genuinely likes her.
This is even highlighted in the way he gives her her gifts for her new ship. In the group chat between the Astral Express Crew, Himeko sneakily points out that Aventurine gave Stelle all those gifts for her and her alone; no one else on the Astral Express got gifts or credits to try and win them over despite them also playing a role in saving Penacony. Not to mention he sends her gifts and credits even after no longer having a use for her. And interestingly enough, despite Stelle's usual bold personality, she found herself anxious at the thought of thanking Aventurine for his genuine gift.
Whenever Stelle does something that goes against whatever he thought she'd say or do, he responds in a way that indicates amusement, perhaps a nice contrast to the predictable way his luck prevents his plans from failing.
Although he was willing to test out on himself if death truly existed in the Dreamscape, he was not willing to allow others to put their own life on the line according to the Chinese translation of his line in All the Sad Tales[1]; meaning he never intended for Stelle come to serious harm in the first place.
