- “Even if meant crawling out of the pits of hell. Even if it meant being forever surrounded by death. Even if it meant drowning in conspiracies and resentment… “Being a detective is worth it all,” he said, then gently smiled.”
- — Narration; Ayatsuji, on how he has Tsujimura as his partner no matter the circumstance.
Ayamura is the het ship between Yukito Ayatsuji and Mizuki Tsujimura from the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom.
Canon[]
Tsujimura was assigned to monitor Ayatsuji, whom she refers to as “Ayatsuji-sensei” or "Detective Ayatsuji." Ayatsuji refers to Tsujimura by “Tsujimura-kun" or “Agent Tsujimura.” The two started off on cross terms, Tsujimura finding Ayatsuji unbearable and the latter dismissing Tsujimura and insulting her on a whim. However, once Tsujimura agreed to be Ayatsuji's partner, as time went on the two displayed their close bond as partners, and Ayatsuji progressively warms up to her and expresses his disguised concern for her, displaying more intimate emotions and uncharacteristic worry for her. Tsujimura has an attachment to Ayatsuji due to his connection to her mother and implied feelings for Ayatsuji. Although Ayatsuji constantly remarks on her reckless behavior and attempts to seem annoyed by it, he appreciates it, stating he needed her recklessness to defeat Kyogoku. Ayatsuji takes their partnership seriously, going to extreme lengths like betraying the Special Division while putting his life at risk to protect Tsujimura, showing an uncharacteristic intimate and kind side of him when willing to die for her. The two manage to bond over a shared life of suffering from their abilities, as well as having ties to the Reigo Island case which drives the plot of Gaiden.
Despite trusting each other with their lives, the two are prone to argue and bicker constantly, which is a main aspect of their dynamic. Despite having their differences, Tsujimura often predicts Ayatsuji's thoughts and easily finishes his sentences, the same going for Ayatsuji to Tsujimura. Tsujimura remarks how cold-blooded and cruel Ayatsuji is, finding no other way to cooperate him other than threatening him with her authority, irritated by his childish and rude remarks and constantly embarrassed by his teasing. Tsujimura shows great admiration and respect towards Ayatsuji however, jumping to showcase his intellect to others or fawn over it. Tsujimura is always attempting to get his praise and acknowledgment even while posing herself as independent "woman of mystery." She has unwavering faith in his abilities, even to the point of letting down her guard amidst deathly situations in faith that he will solve the conflict. Tsujimura refuses to betray her trust in Ayatsuji and refuses to shoot him despite all odds. Kyogoku even calls her Ayatsuji's familiar spirit because of her intense loyalty to Ayatsuji. Tsujimura admits to having somewhat of an attachment to Ayatsuji, as he is the only person linked to her supposedly deceased mother, and she admits to taking up her job as an opportunity to ask him about her mother. Even in their first meetings, Tsujimura has no qualms against Ayatsuji even with her belief that his ability murdered her mother.
Ayatsuji on the other hand relentlessly teases Tsujimura, finding her reactions enjoyable and frequently insulting her (oftentimes from his disguised concern). Ayatsuji is aware of Tsujimura's weaknesses and knows how to counter her long lectures and threatening facade by bringing up something embarrassing or making a snide remark, which always results in Ayatsuji's victory. He notices her naivety as well, shown when he casually tricks her into making him a coffee and making her believe he bought a maid dress for her. Although Ayatsuji prefers to work alone, he is willing to accept help from Tsujimura, though always demands for a deal in return, such as doing everything he says all day, Ayatsuji cares greatly for Tsujimura despite not showing it, and his concern slowly manifests thoroughly through the duration of Gaiden and his cold demeanor warms up by the end. However his seemingly uncaring attitude, Ayatsuji can read and analyze Tsujimura’s thoughts quite easily, even ones she’s unaware of herself. He refuses to admit his care and seems opposed to the idea of doing anything kind for her, but consistently saves her life and tries to stop her from acting reckless.
When they first met, Ayatsuji would insult Tsujimura cold-heartedly throughout their first meetings, not wanting any help nor a supervisor to watch over him. Despite Tsujimura's great respect for Ayatsuji she is initially fed up with his rude attitude and finds him to be insane when he tortures Junichirou. At Narwhal Manor, Ayatsuji strangely decides to protect Tsujimura from dying via the toxic gas with the deal that she becomes his partner instead. He then shows rare and eccentric joy when Tsujimura agrees to be his partner and promises she'll protect him. Instead of leaving Tsujimura to die, he solves the puzzle and saves her promptly. Kyogoku himself even remarks on how Ayatsuji chose to save her life despite only meeting her that very day.
Ayatsuji’s possibly hinted romantic feelings, or morelike attraction, is a running gag throughout their interactions. Ayatsuji states he didn't run away from the Special Division to save Tsujimura; however, this was later proved a lie as he refused to admit he chose Tsujimura's life over his. He also goes states that he's okay living a life of hell and hardship as long as it's with Tsujimura. Many of Ayatsuji’s hinted attraction stems from his comedic comments, such as how he says Tsujimura looked good in a leash, even buying one for the exact reason and urging her to wear it outside. Ayatsuji responds childishly and teases only Tsujimura, seeming keen on the idea of Tsujimura becoming his servant and pet, wanting to see her lick a leaf, and photographing her after she passes out.
Tsujimura has hinted feelings for Ayatsuji, seen blushing when he teases her or merely responds to her queries, frequently bashful and attempting to cover up her flustered expressions by snapping back at Ayatsuji. In the light novel Tsujimura describes her face to have slowly turn red, her temperature rising, and other signs of attraction. When Ayatsuji "died", Tsujimura was shown to be in intense turmoil and grief upon his sacrifice and in great relief once he turned out to be alive. Tsujimura is bashful when confronting Ayatsuji about his sacrifice for her and quickly gets upset when she believes his excuse.
Tales of the Lost[]
Happy Birthday First Half[]
This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
When Tsujimura is assigned on her first mission to watch over Ayatsuji, she monologues on how she’s read up and memorized every document about Ayatsuji’s ability, history, and the cases he’s solved. She recalls on how Ango warned her to never show emotion around Ayatsuji, but she feels that she can easily succeed, excited about the task.
In front of Ayatsuji’s office she barges in after mustering confidence and begins to take on a reprimanding speech, only to be interrupted by Ayatsuji torturing Tanizaki and tying him upside down in the office being cooked alive. Tsujimura is shocked and hits her head on the door frame.
The next part of the story cuts to Tsujimura, stammering, asking Ayatsuji what he’s doing. He asks her to wait a moment and that he’s busy, turning the fire to high heat and beginning to torture the boy. Tsujimura interrupts and asks Ayatsuji what he’s doing, claiming that Tanizaki will die at this rate. Ayatsuji remarks asking if the suspect will confess anything with gentle heat. This shocks Tsujimura who realizes the suspect snuck in and worries she may get fired due to this situation. Ayatsuji tells Tsujimura it’s good she’s understood the gravity of the situation, and tells her to wait in a corner, to which she complies. To Tanizaki, Ayatsuji monologues on how hanging upside down restricts circulatory function, and that smoke hinders oxygen intake. While remarking he wants to test out which one will happen first, Tsujimura interrupts and points out Tanizaki is gagged, therefore he’s unable to confess anything.
Ayatsuji is confused by Tsujimura’s statement, who claims it seems Tanizaki is attempting to say something. Ayatsuji asks her if she’s an imbecile, offending her as she realizes she’s not taking the initiative nor taking change. Tsujimura attempts to command Ayatsuji by saying his name, but he responds by saying, “No.” Confused, Tsujimura points out that she hasn’t said anything yet, but Ayatsuji responds that she’s meddling with the interrogation. He asks if it is due to not wanting to appear as a rookie, making Tsujimura mumble. Ayatsuji tells her to speak up, and she tells Ayatsuji he’s right. She asks the point of analyzing her as such, to which he remarks that the “simpleton population” in the room has increased by one. He tells her everything was written on her face already, prompting her to claim he’s lying. But when met with silence, she asks if her claim was true. Though he simply rebuttals that he feels a headache coming on, and that he should’ve expected the worst.
Ayatsuji tells himself he knew it would be a terrible day, perplexing Tsujimura. However, Ayatsuji brushes this off and promptly asks Tsujimura to pick a number between one and ten. She responds, “What?” as Ayatsuji tells her to say whatever comes to mind — once Tsujimura picks seven, Ayatsuji announces that within seven hours she’ll voluntarily put in a request to be transferred, and that he’ll use threats, reports, and manipulate information. He gives her “his word” that he’ll go to the greatest of lengths for this, but she angrily calls him mean, and that she’s never going to put in a transfer request. Tsujimura announces that she’ll never mess up since it’s her first assignment.
Ayatsuji tells her it’s not his problem, but he then offers a proposition - that he’ll give her five minutes to ascertain the suspect’s identity, and if she succeeds he’ll admit she can take charge, otherwise she must enter the transfer request, which leaves Tsujimura speechless. Ayatsuji mockingly asks her if she’s gave up and landing to complain that he was a bully. Tsujimura demands him to take her seriously, but is determined to question the suspect to win.
At the end of the first half, Ango reveals that the reason Ayatsuji remarked that he knew "today would be a terrible day" is because today is Ayatsuji's birthday, and Tsujimura responds with adequate shock, confused.
Happy Birthday Second Half[]
Eventually, the story leads the duo to visit the Narwhal Mansion behest a request, along with Kyougoku. When Ayatsuji and Kyougoku solve the puzzle easily, Tsujimura is impressed, to which Ayatsuji remarks that the puzzle was "unacceptably simple" for someone like Kyougoku or him. When Tsujimura falls asleep due to the sleeping gas launched by the Architect, Ayatsuji attempts to wake her up with threats of stepping on her, and when she doesn't budge, he steps on her with both feet—to which Tsujimura awakes angrily in pain. The two are locked alone in a room, and a collar is around Tsujimura, chaining her to the floor unable to move. When the poisonous gas fills the room as another puzzle appears. Ayatsuji attempts to solve it before the it fills the room, and while doing so, Tsujimura marvels at his intellect and skill.
However, Ayatsuji hits a roadblock in the puzzle and announces they're screwed. Ayatsuji is able to breathe through the air outlet at the ceiling, and he reveals that the Architect's goal here is to tell him to leave Tsujimura to die. Despite the unfavorable circumstance of certain death, Tsujimura has faith in Ayatsuji's abilities.
As Ayatsuji mentally calculates the answer to the puzzle, he prompts Tsujimura for her last words, saying he can still listen "at the very least," and how he's "not sure if it'll provide [Tsujimura] any consolation." After dead silence, Tsujimura asks Ayatsuji to tell her about her mother. She states Ayatsuji was the detective who solved the case when her mother died, and Tsujimura begs him for an answer of how she lived, how she died, the emotions she had, her last words, and throughout this Ayatsuji remains silent. He then asks if that was the sole purpose why Tsujimura wanted the job of monitoring him, so that she could ask him these questions. Tsujimura confirms this and states all the pain of testing and training was nothing knowing she could achieve this goal. Ayatsuji doesn't believe her and states she's betting her entire life on this unlikely opportunity. Tsujimura doesn't budge, and Ayatsuji questions why she's going this far for her mother when their relationship was so terrible. Tsujimura confirms this and states that knowing her is as important as the "very act of being born." Ayatsuji remains silent and affirms her statement, saying "believing that is what makes people think that their birthday is something to celebrate." Tsujimura realizes that's why Ayatsuji hates his birthday.
- Ayatsuji – “Think of me as a partner.”
- Tsujimura – “What do you mean...?”
- Ayatsuji – “With a partner, your life doesn't only belong to you. They put their lives on the line for each other. If you swear that you will do that, I'll put all my effort into solving this problem in time.”
- Tsujimura – “...!”
- — Ayatsuji offering Tsujimura partnership
Ayatsuji, stern, tells Tsujimura to forget about her mother, to stop looking at him as a source of information, and to not look at him like someone to keep watch over; and to instead look at him like a partner. Tsujimura questions him, and he explains, if Tsujimura swears to put her life on the line for him, he'll put all his effort into solving the problem in time before her untimely death.
- Tsujimura – “In my mind, you're the only thing left where my mom exists, and I want to protect that. And that's why I can't afford to die here. So I swear… If the government- No, if fate demands that I protect you... Then I will obey.”
- Ayatsuji – “Well said. I recorded that.”
- — Tsujimura agreeing to the partnership
Tsujimura agrees to being Ayatsuji's partner, stating if fate demands her to stay by his side and protect him, she will do it, reaffirming the connection between her mother and Ayatsuji.
- Tsujimura – “Don't tell me... You finished solving the problem and decided to do that little song and dance to force me into a corner...?”
- Ayatsuji – “What? No. This was to prepare for what's to come. I wanted you to give in.”
- Tsujimura – “Excuse me?!”
- Ayatsuji – “I said I'd make you quit within seven hours, but I've changed my mind. It'll be worse than that. You get to stick by me where I can give you hell.”
- Tsujimura – “Th-that's not fair! It doesn't count! This contract was made under coercion! That makes it invalid!”
- Ayatsuji – “You still surrendered to me. It's just a matter of time before that fact begins weighing on your soul. Look forward to it.”
- — Ayatsuji and Tsujimura bickering
Ayatsuji expresses his content at her agreement, and much to Tsujimura's shock, they escape the manor after Ayatsuji reveals the door's been open the entire time, and Ayatsuji teases Tsujimura about being bound to him via a contract as she angrily objects. Despite Ayatsuji's cold demeanor he seems joyed to have Tsujimura as his partner.
- Her deduction skills may be second-rate. But that foolishness that allows her to act without seeing future consequences is something you and I don't have. And that's when I thought...Cleverness will never be enough to take you down. I need stupidity that is polished like a crystal.
- —Ayatsuji on Tsujimura to Kyogoku
After the ordeal blows over, Ayatsuji remarks to Kyogoku: "She said the life she's been given in valuable. Even when death had her by the throat." referring to Tsujimura during the gas room incident. He goes on to say he needs her second-rate deduction skills and her stupidity polished like a crystal.
After the confrontation with Kyogoku and the Architect and the events at Narwhal Manner, the next day shows Tsujimura angrily telling Ayatsuji to focus on writing his report. Begrudgingly, Ayatsuji offers a trade: if Tsujimura "runs in a circle three times" and barks, and "puts on a leash, act like a dog and make sounds like one while doing her work", then he'll write the report. Tsujimura exclaims how one-sided the deal is, and afterward she contemplates the events at the Manor while she discusses things with Ayatsuji.
As Ayatsuji announces they'll be heading to a brand-new crime scene for investigation, Ayatsuji gives Tsujimura a leash, to which she exclaims in confusion asking if he bought this. Ayatsuji, serious, states that during the gas room in Narwhal manor, he realized how good the collar looked on Tsujimura. He demands her to wear the leash whenever they're outside, switching to a smug smile. The only thing Tsujimura says in response is a retort that she'll knock his head upside with the report paper before they leave.
Now, Tsujimura recalls the events of Kyogoku's schemes, ending by stating "the contest would continue on to that fated evening above the waterfall", referencing the events that are to come in Gaiden.
Gaiden - Another Story[]
Gaiden revolves around the plot of Ayatsuji rivaling his former nemesis Kyougoku who has been supposedly resurrected from the dead. However, the main premise focuses on Ayatsuji’s relationship with Tsujimura and how their partnership heavily influences the plot, as the novel is written from Tsujimura’s perspective and gives a greater insight into how she views Ayatsuji. Their dynamic and interactions are shown in nearly every act of the novel, and both of their feelings are heavily hinted through brief descriptions, storylines, dialogue and so forth. The manga adaptation reinforces this as Tsujimura is depicted to constantly blush around Ayatsuji.
Act 1[]
Ayatsuji is solving the murder of a young child in a church. Shortly after he solves the case and easily pins the culprit, Tsujimura enters the scene to reprimand Ayatsuji for accusing a criminal without permission. We see the two’s unfriendly bickering attitude. In response to Tsujimura's reprimanding, Ayatsuji states he's her obedient dog and goes to mimic dog ears with his hands to make fun of Tsujimura. Ayatsuji tells her that “her time is as graceful as ever.”
The murderer runs towards Tsujimura in an attempt to escape, and Ayatsuji shouts telling her to catch the culprit. Tsujimura kicks him and immobilizes the man with ease, telling him that he has the right to remain silent and the right to employ a defense lawyer if he wants. Ayatsuji provokes her by saying that she has a predilection for these sayings. Tsujimura again gave him a lecture saying that the next time he goes alone he will be reported to his superiors, but Ayatsuji does not seem to care. He retorts asking the murderer why people call Ayatsuji the "Homicide Detective", and Tsujimura reaches out to stop Ayatsuji. He then tells her to release the culprit, which leaves her confused and a little reluctant. Ayatsuji warns her asking if she wants to get caught in "it" too, and in the end, when she releases the culprit, he runs out towards the exit in a frenzy; Ayatsuji’s special ability Another activates, leaving the stained-glass mural above to break and fall on the culprit, killing him. Tsujimura exasperatedly watches as Ayatsuji's ability ends the murderer, speechless and looking down. Ayatsuji walks off states it was a natural phenomenon of his abilities, stating if someone's crimes are revealed by him, "They're 100% guaranteed to-" and Tsujimura cuts him off, finishing his sentence: "-...Die in an accident."
Act 2[]
- Perhaps it was his title… Then again, maybe it was something else entirely… Regardless, there was something powerful about this detective that drew me toward him when he was like this——much to my dismay. I guess you could call it an aura.
- —Tsujimura’s perspective as she enters Ayatsuji’s office
The next day, Tsujimura heads to the Ayatsuji Detective Agency to monitor Ayatsuji, as that is her job for the time being. Before entering the office, Tsujimura poses and says her favorite movie line: "Your biggest mistake was being born in the same era as me." Upon entering, Ayatsuji greets Tsujimura casually, glancing in her direction. Tsujimura notes how something powerful about Ayatsuji drew her to him, despite her dismay. She calls it an aura and wonders if it’s merely his title. Tsujimura greets Ayatsuji but stiffens her tone to hide her timidness. She comments on th at Ayatsuji should have something more important to tel her first, though he feigns ignorance. This causes Tsujimura to huff as Ayatsuji doesn’t take her seriously, snatching his book and glaring down at him, demanding his attention. The latter threatens him, reminding Ayatsuji that depending on the conduct she can shoot him to death.
Ayatsuji muses then remarks how effective the threat was, prompting a deal: he tells Tsujimura he'll give her his upmost respect if she makes him coffee. Tsujimura is startled and surprised by the simple request. She then focuses her attention on brewing the coffee, but soon after, she realizes she's been tricked and gets angry at Ayatsuji, saying she’s not his maid. Ayatsuji remarks on how easy she was fooled.
The two start arguing about yesterday's case and Ayatsuji's conduct. Tsujimura tells him that his oversight is a privilege of the government, and how he should show her some gratitude. Ayatsuji interrupts saying that he is grateful, making Tsujimura blush. However, she gets irritated and flails her arms around when Ayatsuji says he is thankful that someone easy to deal with like her was sent to supervise him. Ayatsuji asks Tsujimura if he could drink the coffee she made anyway, and as he does, and he says that it is not bad. Tsujimura grows flustered and blushes at the sudden compliment, thinking to herself, "He praised me. That really came out of nowhere..."
Though, Tsujimura quickly realizes she let her guard down and fumes, staring that his “smooth-talking” isn’t fooling anyone. She scolds Ayatsuji once again, explaining she’s known as a “woman of mystery’ among her peers and an elite agent, only for Ayatsuji to snap back by asking if she was scolded by her boss prior to arriving. Next, he states she picked up a latte at the coffee shop by explaining he observed the coffee smudge by her lips. He then explains that she likely passed by the narrow book town in District 1 due to her worry of a possible ambush. Ayatsuji states she contacted the sniper team and changed all observation points to D2, and then quoted a movie line before entering. Tsujimura is stunned and questions how Ayatsuji knew all of this as he relays his thought process and observation behind all statements he's made. In a panic, Tsujimura is awestruck and thinks to herself, “A true detective…” before she then frantically questions, in a blush, how Ayatsuji knew about the movie line. Ayatsuji responds flatly, "If you don't want to be heard, keep your voice down." in contrast to his lengthy explanations beforehand. Tsujimura's face turns completely red as she smiles in shock, recalling the event as the most embarrassing moment in her life after weakly covering her face.
While observing Ayatsuji write his report of the case from the previous day. She ponders on Ayatsuji’s special ability. Just as she wishes he were “at least a little more docile and easier to grasp”, she is cut off by Ayatsuji teasing. Ayatsuji asks why she's staring at him so intently, remarking that if she wants to become his maid, she can change into a maid outfit. Tsujimura denies and blushes at this, pondering how this is the type of person Ayatsuji is, before wondering to herself why he has a maid outfit and if he purchased it himself. Ayatsuji further adds how a security camera would be more efficient in this case. To this, Tsujimura responds that a camera couldn’t pester him for reports and Ayatsuji retorts, “And that’s your added value, huh?” before Tsujimura scoffs and tells him to finish his report.
Ayatsuji muses on her anger before promptly finishing the report and handing it to Tsujimura; startled, she reads over it and questions the final section before Ayatsuji teases, “I thought reading was your forte, Agent Tsujimura.” to which Tsujimura threatens she’ll punch him. Ayatsuji and Tsujimura go back and forth discussing the odd details of the crime the previous day and the possibility of a third-party. Tsujimura tracks the criminal’s GPS activity quickly, eliciting Ayatsuji’s praise of her quick work. Tsujimura rubs the back of her head and blushes, then Ayatsuji adds, “The agents beside you, I mean.” She then frowns and asks Ayatsuji why he hadn’t told the Division of the details beforehand, and Ayatsuji “sincerely” apologizes much to Tsujimura’s annoyance. Ayatsuji then comments on how Tsujimura always repeats the same lines, such as, “Just carry out your work, and be a good dog while awaiting further orders.”, resulting in Tsujimura sweating and looking away.
Linking the murder of the young boy to an outside abettor and the culprit's activity to a well, Ayatsuji leads Tsujimura to his office basement. In the basement lies a garden of antique dolls that Ayatsuji collects as his pastime, and Tsujimura remarks how creepy the chilling basement and said dolls are, finding Ayatsuji odd. The two discuss the mysterious well known in gossip magazines and such, and Ayatsuji commands Tsujimura to get a request for the Special Division so that they may investigate the well.
Act 3[]
Tsujimura questions a man on intel for the well before she meets with Ayatsuji to recount the story, adding, “Not bad, huh? I gained all that info in a day’s time.” Ayatsuji simply responds, saying he bets that all she did was question the man, asking what the subject’s name was. Tsujimura begins to fumble, sweating and mumbling her answer before Ayatsuji sighs, “Haah. Wow, what an inspector.”
Afterwards, they head to investigate the well. They find four bamboo blades and six round stones. Ayatsuji deduces that the objects are related to a curse and begins to relay the tale of the Deity Akiyama-no-shitabi-otoko. Tsujimura crouches down to inspect the well and is frightened by the story, before Ayatsuji explains they have to check for salt on the rotten leaves, the item connected to the curse. Tsujimura incredulously asks how, to which Ayatsuji darkens and tells Tsujimura to lick it. Tsujimura is distraught but prepares to lick it but stops hesitantly, trembling—she then realizes Ayatsuji is messing with her, blushing and saying they can simply have the lab test for salt. Ayatsuji looks away while frowning, greatly disappointed that Tsujimura realized he was tricking her yet again, saying, “Tch. Oh, you remembered?”
Ayatsuji states he's giving up the investigation, and confused, Tsujimura states they need to lab check the objects, and they have to find other leads-However, Ayatsuji counters this saying that the well is their first and last lead for the case. He then shares about a common thread among ghost stories - that spirits dwell in wells. Tsujimura asks if a ghost is behind this ordeal, and Ayatsuji deduces that the culprit set it up only to look like the well is haunted.
Tsujimura is confused at Ayatsuji’s prompt defeat and attempts to console him with an awkward smile before explaining that the well is haunted. Intrigued, Tsujimura asks if he already identified the culprit of the crime. Ayatsuji deduces the secret behind the six pebbles and four bamboo leaves, and orders Tsujimura to check the vicinity of the well tomorrow. Ayatsuji gives a detailed analysis of the secrets behind the well, and Tsujimura realizes Ayatsuji gave up at the well only because he didn't want to get his hands dirty. Ayatsuji smirks and orders Tsujimura to take a colleague with her and get her hands dirty, making her blush and groan.
He finishes with stating he wishes her every success and dubs her "Detective Assistant." (Or "Ms. Detective's Assistant") The following day, the two meet up and while deciphering a code from the well, Tsujimura seems desperate to impress Ayatsuji in deciphering the mystery, and Ayatsuji throws insults and remarks at a confused Tsujimura.
When Ayatsuji, Tsujimura, and Asukai discuss what their next course of action is to take down Kyougoku, the three are attacked by the police's Special Forces. While Tsujimura is stunned in fear, Ayatsuji grabs her and calls her a fool, quickly saving her from the gunfire and bringing them into a storage room to take cover.
Ayatsuji orders Tsujimura to kill the ringleader without questioning them, and Tsujimura nods. She then starts to panic over whether she’s capable enough of this role, attempting to calm herself down. Ayatsuji notices how anxious Tsujimura is, calling her name and asking in a rhetorical manner what her favorite line is, reassuring and jogging her confidence as she smiles and calls him detestable; to which Ayatsuji leans back and smirks.
Act 4[]
This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
After the incident that claimed the lives of the special forces, Tsujimura is unable to get sleep and muses that it’ll be the worst day of her life coming forward. She drags herself out to meet with Ayatsuji who remarks she must have had a nice morning lap. Tsujimura clutches her head, tired as Ayatsuji compared her to a five year old kid before they head into the Justice Department for her testimony. Tsujimura continues to fidget and panic, leaning against the wall, slumped. She asks Ayatsuji when the meeting is as she groans and explains she tried her hardest.
Ayatsuji then tells her that she’s a rookie and she’ll be making rookie mistakes as word of comfort, asking her if she wanted to hear him say something like that. He adds if her mistake pertained to normal office work, mistakes are alright; as he claims that there’s no next time in the matter of life and death, leading Tsujimura to sigh and confirm Ayatsuji’s words.
Tsujimura then muses on her ability, the Shadowling, which does not follow her orders and which she knows almost nothing about. She views it as a curse and a reminder of her late mother, ruminating and falling into a dark spiral. She then speaks aloud, calling herself, “A murderer…” Ayatsuji knowingly asks if she’s referring to him with a blank expression. Tsujimura then panics and reassures she didn’t mean to call Ayatsuji a murderer, but then goes to ask Ayatsuji while looking down, “Sensei, have you ever wished you didn’t have your ability?” Ayatsuji muses and calls her query a mature question, before going on to state it’d take ten years to answer.
He then asks Tsujimura when her ability was awakened, and she answers with five years. Tsujimura grimly thinks on her past and the Reigo Island Serial Killer case where her mother had died at. Tsujimura remembers the time her ability activated and thinks back on how much of a stranger she was to her mother. She then wonders if the island case was solved by Ayatsuji, leading to her question, “How was mother’s state at that time?” Ayatsuji explains he knows nothing of her mother before asking Tsujimura on the Reigo Island case’s info.
While recalling the case Tsujimura thinks about how much the case means to both Ayatsuji and her, as the event caused Ayatsuji to be supervised and Tsujimura her mother’s death. Tsujimura is interrupted when Ayatsuji then asks her if she became his supervisor in order for revenge against him. This causes Tsujimura to fall silent, contemplating Ayatsuji’s words and unsure what her motive is. Though, the conversation ends when Sakashita rolls in. Ayatsuji warns Tsujimura that Sakashita will bring her hell as they both stare at the Director. Sakashita cuts in between Tsujimura and shakes Ayatsuji’s hand, annoying her.
The conversation drops downhill after Tsujimura takes the blame for the incident. Sakashita ends up degrading and spewing hateful words towards Tsujimura, and Sakashita shortly walks off. Tsujimura, frustrated and enraged, shouts at Sakashita to wait. To this, Ayatsuji urges Tsujimura that she shouldn't be triggered over someone like Sakashita, leading to her protest. Recognizing Tsujimura's anger towards the situation, Ayatsuji leans his head down and explains he'll do a favor for Tsujimura today.
Ayatsuji turns to Sakashita and begins to question him, promptly exposing the man's fraudulent alliance with Kyougoku, much to Tsujimura's shock. He ends up revealing that Sakashita manipulated Ayatsuji's ability to kill off pawns, spiraling into an explosive panic. Tsujimura is shocked, though after Sakashita gets his comeuppance and walks off, she beams widely. She beams, blushing and excitedly flocking to Ayatsuji to tell him how relieving that conversation was. Ayatsuji looks down coldly, though with a smile, and remarks, "I see you still have your usual happy face..." though explains Sakashita will now target Tsujimura exclusively.
Tsujimura is startled and begins to freeze up, muttering, "Then I'll be..." Ayatsuji remarks that in order to "put it in a way a little girl" like her could understand, he explains she'll likely be fired. Panicked, Tsujimura runs off to reason with Sakashita as Ayatsuji watches. Though he quickly understands the gravity of the situation and screams at Tsujimura to back away from the trap.
- "Wake up, Tsujimura-kun." Hearing that very close voice, I faintly opened my eyes. I indistinctly see Ayatsuji-sensei's face. I can't grasp his expression well.
- —Tsujimura's perspective on Ayatsuji after the elevator's fall
The elevator Sakashita is in ends up falling seconds as Tsujimura approaches, leading to her injury and the descent of multiple agents. Tsujimura collapses to the floor after believing herself to have saved Sakashita, her vision darkening before Ayatsuji worriedly runs up and crouches down to her. Ayatsuji beckons Tsujimura to wake up, and she does so while asking what happened. She quickly looks at the elevator as Ayatsuji explains it fell, asking if she had saved Sakashita successfully. Ayatsuji responds that she did, but only half of him, leading Tsujimura to observe that Sakashita had been cut in half.
Upon meeting up with Asukai, Tsujimura watches Ayatsuji discuss Kyougoku's scheme with Asukai. Ayatsuji remarks that Kyougoku prepare this case specifically, only for Tsujimura to explain for him that the challenge is directly fixed to target Ayatsuji. He walks off and alerts Tsujimura and Asukai to begin the inspection, to which the three observe the security footage. Tsujmura engages in a short conversation with Asukai regarding the danger of their job. Asukai asks if she wants revenge on Ayatsuji, to which she grimly denies, explaining she's strictly confident in Ayatsuji's abilities.
Tsujimura is taken aback when Ayatsuji cries out, "Shit!", slamming the table as Ayatsuji points to the security footage. They are both dumbfounded when the person in the footage has a missing left finger, showing that the figure is the Engineer. Ayatsuji begins to tremble, seething as Tsujimura darkens, asking if Ayatsuji is serious that the Engineer is involved with the elevator case. After a brief investigation, Tsujimura shows concern at the anguished and angered side of Ayatsuji, the latter walking off and preparing the next steps of their siege. Asukai heads off with his subordinates after Ayatsuji's order, and in the brief silence Tsujimura jumps to Ayatsuji and announces she wants to join the mission as well. Ayatsuji reminds her that her job is to supervise him and not arrest criminals, to which she yells out desperately, "But...! He's Engineer!", explaining she's still never heard anything of her mother.
She reasons solemnly that Ayatsuji should be responsible for helping, since the case is linked to the Reigo Island incident. Ayatsuji declines and Tsujimura grows more desperate, only for Ayatsuji to shift the tone. He takes out his kiseru and smiles slightly, explaining he'll help out with the case if Tsujimura does everything Ayatsuji orders of her on a set day. Tsujimura is visibly startled by the bargain, turning red as she hesitates before agreeing. Tsujimura enthusiastically breaks into a run to get the car, before Asukai questions Ayatsuji's decision of allowing Tsujimura's assistance, to which he falsely declares he killed Tsujimura's mother.
Once Ayatsuji and Tsujimura are in the car and driving to the closest facility, Ayatsuji looks out the window, leading to Tsujimura exasperatedly asking if he's listening. He smiles giddily, muttering, "What should I do, huh...", making Tsujimura confused as she asks if he's referring to Engineer. Ayatsuji unexpectedly answers, "No. With you." Ayatsuji smirks and asks if her "sunshine brain" had already forgotten their deal, and Tsujimura darkens comedically while glancing in the rearview mirror multiple times to observe Ayatsuji. He gets awfully talkative as he lists out their agreement, adding that she has to listen to hundred or two hundred of his commands, mentioning that it’s like the old tale of “three wishes” except not. She realizes she's been set up and angrily tries to cancel their agreement, sweating immensely to which Ayatsuji threatens he'll report her breach of contract.
Tsujimura scowls and Ayatsuji hums, "Ooh, that face." and goes on to say he finds her "frustration face" immensely entertaining. He says to himself, with flower effects at his speech, that he should preserve her expression with help from a doll-maker. Tsujimura seethes and thinks to herself how despite being the agent, she constantly forgets she has Ayatsuji's life in her hands. Tsujimura tells Ayatsuji she doesn't mind his teasing, but that she could report he's on a "dangerous rampage" to her higher-ups and get him eliminated. Ayatsuji remarks that she'll be betraying the trust of the Division with a false report, leading her to seethe even more from his remarks. Ayatsuji ends the banter by declaring he hopes she'll become an excellent servant one day, to which she blushes and flails her arms around, protesting.
At the railway tracks, the Division corners Engineer. As Ayatsuji talks to the criminal, he suddenly calls to Tsujimura and tells her how she’s been piling up in stress lately, telling her to handcuff Engineer and twist the binding as much as she’d like. Though, she quickly points her gun at Engineer when he takes out an explosive, as Tsujimura observes Ayatsuji’s countenance. She then approaches Engineer and threatens she won’t hesitate in shooting him, feeling herself grow further enraged and disgusted as she explains how Engineer was the one who caused her mother’s death.
Act 5[]
This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
Ayatsuji displays his horror after Kyougoku alerts him of the Port Mafia’s attack on Tsujimura. Ayatsuji falters as Kyougoku explains the situation, referring to Tsujimura as “your Miss Tsujimura.” As Asukai and Tsujimura are cornered by the mafia grunts, she panics and wishes she had Ayatsuji’s advice in this situation. As Ayatsuji starts to solve the impossible case demonstrated to him, with the deal that he will be given information to save Tsujimura, he grows tense and weary. Kyougoku himself remarks on this, wondering why he’s so tense. Tsujimura passes out presumably from exhaustion, and Ayatsuji takes a photograph of her during that state.
Act 6[]
Once she's alerted that Ayatsuji disappeared after framing an innocent, Tsujimura investigates Kubo's death and contemplates Ayatsuji's betrayal, conflicted and clueless why he decided to frame an innocent. When she's called by Ayatsuji, Tsujimura is startled and shocked, as Ayatsuji asks if she ate the tea cakes from the office cupboard without permission. Tsujimura instinctively yells out that she didn't, before shakingly asking Ayatsuji where he is and begging him to come back. Ayatsuji then jumps around the issue to keep the later revealed truth hidden, then he bids farewell. Tsujimura wells up in tears, confused by her emotional outburst as she wonders if Ayatsuji was truly selfish as she contemplates the events they went through together. Under the impression of his betrayal, she angrily screams at him how selfish he is, yelling with her rhetorical words, "That selfishness of yours was what killed my mother, wasn't it?!" Ayatsuji remains silent for a dreadful interlude, before coldly responds for her to quit investigating Kubo's murder and saying the case is impossible to respond. He tells her next time to not be in charge of a dangerous ability-user like himself, before hanging up. Tsujimura trembles and glumly mutters, "Suit yourself..."
Tsujimura remains hopeless and weary after the conversation, tired and depressed as she attempts to forget Ayatsuji for the time being, though doubting her detective skills in retrospect to Ayatsuji whom she relied on. When Tsujimura is ordered to dispose of Ayatsuji by Ango, she grows hesitant and unsure. Tsujimura thinks to herself how her heart unexpectedly aches after the shoot-to-death order. Later on, upon contemplating the intel behind the case, she promptly realizes the truth behind Ayatsuji's actions.
Tsujimura recalls the event in order to realize the reality; that she had murderous intention whilst unintentionally trampling Kubo with her car during the drawbridge incident. Therefore, in order to prevent his ability from activating, Ayatsuji betrayed the Special Division to prevent Tsujimura from being killed inevitably. Tsujimura realizes Ayatsuji's selfless actions and his motive behind the betrayal, conflicted for the time being before she talks to Asukai.
- I inhaled, then exhaled. 'That selfishness of yours was what killed my mother, isn't it?!?!' At that time--when I talked with Ayatsuji-sensei on the phone, I lashed out in anger and said that. But, that was a mistake. Ayatsuji-sensei didn't run away out of selfishness or anything. With even a tiny grain of carelessness, you'll end up drowning in grief rising from the throat up.
- —Tsujimura regretting her words to Ayatsuji
Tsujimura regrets her words to Ayatsuji, fully realizing that he ran away to save her life. She devises a plan to save Ayatsuji from Kyogoku and is plagued by doubts and hesitance. She's unsure whether she can catch up to Ayatsuji or not, but she tells herself she's sure of one thing: that she won't shoot Ayatsuji no matter what, even if it's the right thing to do.
- “Ayatsuji-...-sensei......! I'll find you...wherever you are......! Thinking of me...like a little girl......! Gone without sayin' a thing......! Don't give me that, you cold-blooded man......!”
- — Tsujimura, out of breath, trying to find Ayatsuji to save him
Tsujimura realizes she has to confront Ayatsuji before the Division can arrive at the waterfall; out of breath and with her lungs about to collapse, she climbs up the mountain trail. She describes herself at feeling no pain despite the treacherous path from her sheer will, and later says to herself there's “something she has to say to Ayatsuji no matter what.”
Tsujimura hears three gunshots ringing from the waterfall and she instinctively panics, wondering if Ayatsuji shot Kyougoku or vice versa. She calls out his name and brings out her pistol and reaches Ayatsuji, begging him to step away. Ayatsuji speaks in a gentle tone, musing on how she went as far to travel to the waterfall on his behalf. Tsujimura interrupts him saying they have no time and screams that they have to arrest Kyougoku in order to sake Ayatsuji. Kyougoku takes notice of Tsujimura and tells Ayatsuji, "Ignoring the organization's orders and coming here on her own? Your familiar spirit is loyal, eh? You're making me jealous." to which Ayatsuji responds saying Tsujimura isn’t his familiar spirit, though seems bemused by the idea.
Tsujimura realizes that Kyougoku is nowhere to be found, resulting in her screaming and panicking, fearful as Ayatsuji puts an arm on her shoulder telling her it's no use. Ayatsuji explains to Tsujimura that Kyougoku was never there to begin with, and she exhales in shock, unbelieving before the Division arrives and prepares to shoot Ayatsuji. Tsujimura screams that Ayatsuji is innocent, desperate before Ango interrupts her and explains Ayatsuji's disposal is now in command. Tsujimura attempts to stop the twenty-two assault units and six sniper units before one of the soldiers holds her back.
Tsujimura screams with all of her might begging Ayatsuji to tell the Division the truth behind his actions, thinking to herself how this was the first time she felt genuine fear towards Ango, realizing his cold-heartedness in preparing to shoot Ayatsuji. Tsujimura describes herself as her throat hurting like it's burning and her body hurting all over as she screams at the Division to stop, with Ayatsuji taunting Ango to simply shoot him. Ango approaches and aims the gun at Ayatsuji, thanking him for the cooperation.
- Ayatsuji-sensei looked at me. Sensei's eyes and mine met. As he looked at me-he smiled at me for the first time. Then, he opens his mouth and tries to say something―
- —Narration; Description of the scene from Tsujimura's perspective
Tsujimura watches as Ayatsuji is shot in the head and sent down the waterfall; her "soul shrieks out" as she loosens the grip of the soldier holding her down as she springs into a futile run, asking madly why Ayatsuji had done that for her, anguished and watching in disbelief as she realizes Ayatsuji will never be found again.
- “Emotions piercing me head to toe—the feeling that Sensei died in order to protect me—devoured my body down to every cell.”
- — Tsujimura believing Ayatsuji's faked death
Once Tsujimura is shocked with grief and turmoil upon Ayatsuji's death, Asukai reveals himself to be the real perpetrator behind Kyougoku and his rise, Tsujimura is unable to believe what had happened, and is then shot in the thigh. Asukai points the rifle to the back of her head, spiraling her into questioning and reflecting on her life, as she's seconds away from death. Tsujimura falls into grief and misery realizing Ayatsuji sacrificed himself for a woman who's about to die anyway, being her. As her life flashes before her, she inadvertently calls out for her mother’s help in desperation, before calling out for Ayatsuji.
- Tsujimura – “Help me......Mother.......Help me..................Sensei......”
- Ayatsuji – “'Help me'? You really are such a top-notch agent, aren't you, Tsujimura-kun?”
- — Ayatsuji revealing himself from the "dead" before Tsujimura is killed
Once Ayatsuji remarks on Tsujimura's moment of weakness and reveals his sacrifice was an act to catch Asukai and lower his weakness. Tsujimura is shocked and relieved as she realizes the act, greatly relieved and calm in mind after realizing Ayatsuji is alive, though unable to process the circumstances at hand. Asukai is distraught as well, unable to shoot Tsujimura and threatening to kill her as Ayatsuji explains the situation. Ayatsuji walks towards Asukai, gaining Tsujimura's protests as Ayatsuji remarks, "Lovely reaction." Tsujimura then contemplates on how Ayatsuji's "presence isn't that of a human anymore", and that he's the "very presence of Death itself leaking from the absolute zero of the netherworld." Ayatsuji lifelessly watches as Asukai shoots himself in the head multiple times.
Shortly after, Ayatsuji then approaches Ango explains everything was staged, resulting in Tsujimura's horror as she beckons the two to explain why she hadn't been alerted previously. Ayatsuji and Tsujimura discuss the identity of Kubo; the conversation shifts to Tsujimura bashfully thanking Ayatsuji; he asks, "What for?" and Tsujimura explains in a stumble, "That's why, the.....that, I mean..... Sensei, you, the.......the reason you disobeyed the Special Division's request and fled, I mean that's why, my..." Ayatsuji raises a brow and states he isn't sure what she means, allowing Tsujimura to continue: "No, I'm saying that's why, my......on my behalf, the...... [My face is slowly turning red.] Ah, by any chance, is that what this is? Sensei, are you trying to get me to say it on purpose even if you already know the pattern?"
Ayatsuji stubbornly responds that he "doesn't have the faintest of idea", before Tsujimura is angered and thanks him, "Ayatsuji-sensei, you ran away to prevent me from getting killed. Right? That's why..........I'm very much happy about that! I want to say thank you!" Ayatsuji cracks a smile and muses before he explains he didn't run away with the intention to save her, and only to catch Asukai off guard. Though, his statement is later proved false in the epilogue. The novel describes Tsujimura's temperature to rise and her soul leaping out as she trails off. Ayatsuji then remarks how she's still unable to properly thank him, adding that they'll need to intensify their training policy to make her a good servant.
Tsujimura leaps out at Ayatsuji and swings her fist, to which he predicts this and dodges. Tsujimura threatens she'll throw him off the waterfall again. Though, Tsujimura is interrupted by her injury and ends up collapsing, though Ayatsuji hoists her arm around him and supports her balance. Ayatsuji calls her an idiot before suggesting they head to the hospital, though adding, "I need my servant to return as soon as possible." Tsujimura protests to this name once more, and Ayatsuji then reminds her of the deal they made where Tsujimura will listen to everything Ayatsuji says in a day, proclaiming the deal will start tomorrow. Tsujimura objects, "Hang on! I'm injured!" to which Ayatsuji snickers while lending her his shoulder, "Now that's pretty honest." The paragraph and Ayatsuji's words indicate that Tsujimura wasn't opposed to the idea. The chapter ends on Tsujimura groaning about how horrible Ayatsuji is.
Epilogue[]
Two weeks after the event, Tsujimura runs into Ayatsuji's office with news. Ayatsuji looks up curiously and asks her if she's finally learned how to tie her shoelaces, and Tsujimura shows him the gossip magazine covering the events of Kyougoku's terror. Afterwards, Tsujimura then prompts Ayatsuji asking why Kyougoku had picked the two of them for the 'ceremony', and Ayatsuji says he has no idea. Then, he's haunted by Kyougoku who explains that the reasoning was as Ayatsuji and Tsujimura share "Tsuji" in their names. Tsujimura watches in confusion as Ayatsuji throws a spoon towards Kyogoku, and Tsujimura gapes and laughs on how Ayatsuji showed a new side of anger. Ayatsuji slowly looks over his shoulder and asks, as a warning, whether she would like to repeat her 'training' in 'obedience and honesty' they did during her hospitalization. Tsujimura's face turns white as she collapses to the floor and begs him not to, causing Ayatsuji to smirk and mutter, "Good, you understand your situation." Ayatsuji drops the topic as Tsujimura sighs in relief, and they head into her car.
Ayatsuji enters the library where he meets Tsujimura’s mother, known as Assistant Director Tsujimura. She is revealed to have been alive all this time, contrast to Tsujimura’s belief that she had died from Ayatsuji’s hands years ago. The two share a brief rapport before Assistant Director Tsujimura asks how her daughter is doing, leading to Ayatsuji describing her as a runaway horse and explaining she "bellowed out" another movie line. Assistant Director Tsujimura then muses saying it must be tough before saying she’s glad that Tsujimura is under Ayatsuji’s care. Ayatsuji blankly responds saying he’ll make Tsujimura a splendid servant, and her mother retorts, “You don’t mean that.” Ayatsuji then exhales and contemplates whether to respond or not before he changes the subject to Tsujimura’s shadowling and how she had a run-in with Chuuya Nakahara. Afterwards, Ayatsuji explains to Assistant Director Tsujimura that Kyougoku picked him and Tsujimura as the finale stage in plans for the very reasoning of their names sharing "Tsuji" in it.
- Weighing between your own life and my daughter's life, you chose my daughter.
- —Tsujimura's mother recognizes Ayatsuji's true motive
- “I leave my daughter in your care, Ayatsuji-kun.”
Assistant Director Tsujimura shakes her head in disbelief before she asks Ayatsuji one last question: she tells Ayatsuji she noticed a lie in his report where he had wrote how running away from the Division was a cover-up act to lure out Asukai. Assistant Director Tsujimura explains that Ayatsuji hadn't known of the Shadowling's command, meaning Ayatsuji had ran away with the intent to sacrifice himself and save Tsujimura's life. Ayatsuji blankly responds to her claim how he isn't sure what she's going about. Assistant Director Tsujimura laughs about how Ayatsuji can't even make up a lie, before she claims she'll leave Tsujimura in Ayatsuji's care.
Afterwards, Ayatsuji enters Tsujimura’s car, and she asks who she had met. He responds he caught up with an old friend, then as Tsujimura explains a new case they got, Ayatsuj begins to contemplate all the events that have happened so far—he’s then haunted once more by Kyougoku, screaming at him angrily before Tsujimura turns her head and worriedly asks Ayatsuji what had happened. He then brushes it off and tells her it’s nothing, before abruptly calling her name, and Tsujimura nods and waits for his question.
The two are described to have “gazed” at one another’s faces as Tsujimura expresses her curiosity, before Ayatsuji begins to think: how for the rest of his life he’ll be haunted by his ability and Kyougoku, speaking of how drama and conflict will never leave his life, as well as how blood and lamentation will surround him for the rest of his time. But he then adds to his thoughts, “But…” and the novel describes Tsujimura’s pale-colored eyes staring at Ayatsuji, before he continues to think, “But even so, if it’s with—“, and this part heavily implies that Ayatsuji was referring to his partnership with Tsujimura, also mentioned in by the novel’s translator.
Ayatsuji then stops his train of thought and orders Tsujimura to drive safely, and she rebuttals that she’ll send the car flying, making Ayatsuji shake his head in amazement. He then thinks of lengthy metaphors of how it’s going to be hell and overflowing death in the road ahead, cutting himself off before he could say Tsujimura’s name. He speaks aloud saying, “How lucky I am as a detective.” before gently smiling, marking the end of Gaiden and showing Ayatsuji’s care for Tsujimura.

Fanon[]
Ayamura is a common ship to find within the Gaiden spin-off fanbase, while in the grand scheme of the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom, it is rather rare to see fans. Ayamura is overshadowed by the pairings with smaller screen time but more popularity, TsujiChuu and Angomura. Since Ayatsuji and Tsujimura are not popular characters in the fandom, only appearing in the game and light novel (with Tsujimura's brief appearance in Dead Apple), they are often referred to as the "Blond Dazai" and "Blue Higuchi" duo. Due to their minimal acknowledgement, Ayamura as a whole is rather unknown, and most fans of the franchise have not read the light novel compared to the unfinished manga adaptation, therefore restricting knowledge of the pairing. However, with more fans reading the light novel, Ayamura has become the most popular ship within the Gaiden spin-off, although having only 17+ works on AO3.
Fans began to ship them since they are the two protagonists of the Gaiden brand, with majority of screen time dedicated to their relationship. Seeing Tsujimura, uptight and strict, work with Ayatsuji, lax and teasing, led fans to ship them due to their similar air to pairings such as Kunikidazai. Tsujimura being more expressive while Ayatsuji hardly shows emotion gave wake to fans finding an interesting dynamic between them, especially with Ayatsuji showing the slightest bits of emotions around Tsujimura.
Specifically, many enjoy the partnership and trust between Tsujimura and Ayatsuji. The parallels of their relationship to Dazai and Chuuya’s are often pointed out, which led many fans to pair Chuuya and Tsujimura platonically, imagining them to share qualms over their troublesome partner, as well as Dazai with Ayatsuji.
It is believed that Ayamura is one of the few ships to become canon, as the romantic aspect of their relationship is hinted multiple times in all their interactions, additionally their gradual development throughout Tales of the Lost and Gaiden, all noted with romantic and sexual subtext. Frequently, their relationship is played in a romantic manner for comedic effect, though, they share many heartwarming and intimate moments that fuel the small fanbase of Ayamura shippers. Fan works involving angst playing off of Ayatsuji's failed attempt to save Tsujimura is very common. Both of them having hard childhoods revolving around the Reigo Island Case and their “abilities”, and finding a common ground over it, was another appeal for fans.
Aspects like Tsujimura admiring Ayatsuji yet “hating” him for being annoying and cruel is something fans enjoy, due to a possible conflict of Tsujimura’s feelings for Ayatsuji, and a love-hate relationship on Tsujimura’s side. Many fans have accepted that Tsujimura's admiration for Ayatsuji is in fact a crush. However, on the other side, it's often discussed that Ayatsuji has feelings for Tsujimura after Act 6 and the Epilogue; wherein Ayatsuji plans to give his life to save Tsujimura's and thinks to himself how he is willing to go through everything tortuous as long as Tsujimura is by his side. Fans feel that Ayatsuji's way of expressing his feelings towards Tsujimura is through his teasing and alluding remarks, all easily seen as ship tease. Fans find Ayatsuji's obsession with Tsujimura being in a maid outfit and collar amusing and relate it to Ayatsuji's possible attraction to Tsujimura, as well as the suggestive “special training” in the epilogue.
