Ayuairi is the femslash ship between Ayumi and Airi Momoi from the Project SEKAI fandom.

Canon[]

Ayumi and Airi are both third-year students at Miyasamazuka Girls' Academy. The two met first in middle school during 7th grade and ended up quickly becoming friends, but eventually drifted apart in high school as Airi became busier with her idol activities and was unable to hang out with Ayumi as much. Ayumi is first introduced in Airi's fourth focus event, Friendship Rebuilt.

Friendship Rebuilt[]

While Minori is entertaining the idea of switching over to Miyasamazuka's credit-based course, Airi goes to the Stage SEKAI in order to calm her mind. There she finds Shizuku talking with KAITO, and Airi finds out she was asking for help on organizing schedules. KAITO proceeds to ask what Airi had in mind, and explains to Shizuku and the others how Minori is thinking of switching over. Miku wishes Minori to find an answer that fits her and Airi agrees how she definitely will, but admits that she isn't sure if Minori switching over would really be all for the better, and that she is worried Minori might drift apart from her classmates and friends as a result of getting even busier with work. KAITO decides to ask if Airi would be willing to tell about her past experiences and how she herself drifted apart from her friends when she decided to switch over to the credit-based course. She agrees saying it might not be a fun story to listen to but she'll do it if everyone's willing to listen.

While in her first year of high school, Airi thinks to herself that she doesn't have work for a change and is able to eat lunch at school. She notices Shizuku not being around so she decides to go over to a friend's classroom - that friend being Ayumi, who is attending Miyamasuzaka's regular course. Airi asks if she wants to have lunch together and Ayumi agrees, before mentioning how they haven't managed to hang out at all ever since Airi switched over to the credit-based course. Ayumi asks if she can invite some of her classmates and tells Airi to go and wait in the courtyard. While eating, one of Ayumi's friends asks how she and Airi became friends. In 7th grade, Airi and Ayumi sat next to each other and quickly hit it off as they started talking. Ayumi's classmates ask more about what Airi was like in middle school, and Airi mentions how Ayumi helped her out when she was attempting to become an idol. Ayumi asks what she had exactly done, and Airi laughs replying that it might have not seem like such a huge contribution from her perspective, but the fact that Ayumi never made fun of Airi's dream and always supported her.

Ayumi then shyly explains that she was just telling Airi how she felt, and that Airi has always "had this brilliant aura about her" and how Airi was the one who helped her out, when Ayumi was worried over not being in the same class as her friends. As a result, Ayumi immediately started believing that Airi could make it as an idol. Airi thanks her and Ayumi's classmates agree how kind Airi is and wishes they could be as close with Airi as Ayumi is. A few weeks later, while in her room pondering about her schedule, she thinks how grateful she is to Ayumi for constantly inviting her to have lunch together even though Airi hasn't been able to join them due to how busy she has been. Airi then receives a message from Ayumi who asks if she has heard about the second-years' field trip to Phoenix Wonderland, and invites her to go around together. Airi bitterly smiles before checking her schedule and declining Ayumi's offer due to having work on that day. Ayumi responds later saying it's okay and Airi agrees that they hang out another time before thinking whether they really will have a chance to do so again.

A few days later, while Airi is going home after work in the evening, she runs into Ayumi and her classmates who were coming back from Phoenix Wonderland. Her classmates proceed to show Airi pictures of their trip and they start explaining just how fun they had together. Ayumi then suggests Airi come with them next time, and Airi thinks to herself that she's afraid of crushing their hopes if she promises and doesn't manage to attend. Ayumi apologizes, leaving Airi confused, before saying that she was thoughtless for sending Airi invitations to hang out even though the latter was so busy with work. Airi denies not being bothered about it and that she appreciates it, but Ayumi, feeling bad about it, just thanks Airi for being polite about it. Airi attempts to say she really means her words, but is interrupted by Ayumi showing her some pictures as well. Airi, while watching Ayumi and her classmate bicker, thinks to herself that this is the path she chose and that she should've expected this to happen due to her prioritizing work over hanging out with her friends, before thinking she'd never realized before how lonely she feels being excluded.

Airi explains to everyone in SEKAI that while she and Ayumi still greet each other in the hallways, they haven't properly talked and messaged each other in a long time. After listening to KAITO's advice about how even if you drift apart, your bond with that friend won't be broken, Airi decides to gather the courage to approach Ayumi in the courtyard. Feeling nervous, Airi first asks how Ayumi is doing, and after Ayumi answers, she asks what's gotten into Airi all of a sudden. Airi has a difficulty finding what she wants to say and repeats that she was curious about how Ayumi is doing. She then apologizes for asking and Ayumi assures her it's okay. After a bit of silence, Ayumi asks if Airi has been holding up okay and admits that she watches MORE MORE JUMP!'s streams from time-to-time, and how seeing Airi having so much fun puts a smile on her face. Airi thanks her and Ayumi says she was worried about Airi taking a break from being an idol, and how she feels bad for not being able to do anything for Airi back then. The two then proceed to talk things out, with Airi reassuring that she never thought Ayumi was a bother, how she regrets never telling Ayumi how much her messages encouraged her, and both of them assuring they want to keep being friends.

They also interact in Airi's "Growing Distance" card's second side story. Airi runs into Ayumi in the hallway after her morning dance practice. Ayumi proceeds to ask how Airi and the others manage to exercise in the morning before mentioning how she much fun she had watching MORE MORE JUMP!'s latest stream. Airi asks which parts were Ayumi's favorite parts and what stood out to her the most.

Quotes[]

“Hehe. I suppose it didn't seem like much from your perspective... But you never put down my dream of becoming an idol. You always supported me. What you said that time made me so happy. Most people tended to laugh or snicker when I told them how I wanted to become an idol. So, it was nice to hear someone giving me their support. You gave me so much encouragement.”
— Airi in Friendship Rebuilt Episode 6 "Distance"
“I won't ever forget. I mean, when you first spoke to me that day, you were enveloped in this incredible aura... It's why I thought it was totally possible when you told me that you wanted to become an idol. If anything, I believed you were really cut out for it.”
— Ayumi in Friendship Rebuilt Episode 6 "Distance"

Fanon[]

Ayuairi is a huge rarepair in the fandom. This is mainly due to the fact that Ayumi is a side character who only has appeared in a few events so far and was introduced later in the game, as well as because Airi has more popular ships such as Shizuairi and Airiena. The ship currently has only one work on AO3 and some support on Twitter.
