Dick is the first of Bruce's wards that came into both sides of his life, as he helps Batman keep Gotham safe as the boy wonder, Robin. Bruce was there when Dick watched his parents die in front of him, and since he too had watched his parents die right before his eyes, Bruce decided to take him in. Like he was seeing his child self in Dick. Because Bruce hadn't raised a child before and had forgotten what it was like to be one, he had treated Dick as a solider. This is what got Alfred to step in and give Bruce parental advice, along with helping to keep the peace between Bruce and Dick on bad days. At first Dick had wanted to become like his adoptive father, but as time past he realised that he wanted to be his own person that is nothing like Batman. Feeling that he was trapped in Batman's shadow was one of the reasons he felt the need to become Nightwing and go out on his own. This led them to stop talking to each other until they were able to form a truce between them, that allows Batman and Nightwing to work together like the old days. When Bruce started to take in other young boys who became the next Robin, before they too went out on their own, Dick acknowledges them as his brothers and has served as their "Batman whisperer" whenever they are having trouble with him; knowing from experience that the mission tends to get in the way of father and son bonding. There have even been times when Bruce has turned to Dick for advice or when he needs someone to trust, besides Alfred. As Dick being the first Robin has also made him Bruce's second-in command of sorts; depending on the universe. When Bruce had disappeared and once believed to be dead, Dick became Batman in his place; until Bruce returned. Allowing Dick to become Nightwing again.

Because the animated series of Batman had Dick in his late teens and was living at one of the bromes at Gotham University, he didn't appear very much the first two seasons. That had him as Robin, before he became Nightwing. The episodes that did have Dick in them, he and Bruce worked well together as the iconic demotic duo. Dick had even mentioned how school had kept him from going on portal with his partner, along with making a joke on how he should have brought his homework with him for stakeouts. Sometimes when Batman's cases have ties to his ward's school or something that people like Dick are exports in, like the video game that was created by Riddler, Bruce turns to him for help and insight on the matter. The flashback events of the two part episode, Robin's Reckoning reveals how the two had met in this animated universe.

Like in the original comics, Bruce was there when Dick had watched his parents fall to their deaths and because he saw the man who caused it, Gordan got worried that Tony Zucco would try to silence him. Bruce choosing to stay after the incident to see if the boy is alright and if he had anyone to take him in, along with Gordan sharing his concerns for Dick is what got Bruce to offer his home as a safe house to shelter Dick in, temporarily as there were people at the circus who had offered to take him in. Dick was given Bruce's childhood room and was mostly cared for by Alfred, while both sides of Bruce's double live kept him from spending time to with Dick. Because of his family's killer was never caught, he didn't want Dick to go through the same thing and made it his mission to find and bring Zucco to justice. Luckily Alfred manged to convince Bruce that Dick needed a friend more than he needs a crime fighter, as it gets Bruce to make time for Dick. The two started to bond over the shared pain of losing one's parents and the thoughts they may have had on how they could have prevented it. The scene of Bruce teaching Dick fencing had shown that the two had grown pretty close, before Gordan came over to give Bruce the news of Zucco's plan to skip town and how it meant that Dick doesn't have to keep staying him with. Dick heard all this and didn't want his family's killer to leave Gotham, as it would prevent the police from finding him. Sometime after Dick had ran away to prevent this from happening and had manged to find Zucco, Batman arrived just in time to save Dick from the man when Zucco had caught him before he could call the police. When it looked like that Dick was going to get justice for his parents, the boy fell into the raging water and Batman had put his life over the need to bring Zucco in. Dick wasn't happen about that and had blamed Batman for letting his family's killer get away, after the Dark Knight had manged to save him. Instead of dropping Dick off at the manor when he brought him home, Batman brings him to the Batcave where he asks Dick how much he wants to bring Zucco in, before he reveals his truce identity to him. Alfred comments on how it meant that Dick would be staying with them in defiantly, while Dick smiles at the thought.

During season one, that has Dick as Robin before he became Nightwing before the events of the second season and video game, Dick has been shown to respect his mentor and have a good working relationship when facing Mr. Freeze. At first Dick had wanted to be the leader of the team in order to make Batman proud, but ends up leaving that role to Garth until he was ready to take up the mantel. Like the other heroes who mentored Dick's young teammates, Batman was a little over protective of Robin and forbid Dick to share his true identity with the others (who aren't Wally), along with having him wear dark shaded sunglasses to serve as a second mask for his out-of-costume wear.
