The Backyard Gang is the friend ship between Phineas Flynn, Ferb Fletcher, Isabella Garcia-Shapiro, Baljeet Tjinder, and Buford Van Stomm, from the Phineas and Ferb fandom.
Canon[]
Overview[]
Although The Backyard Gang is an iconic group of characters, serving as the main cast of the A Plot in most stories, they weren't always an established friend group right from the start. During the first season of the show, Phineas and Ferb would go through a revolving door of alternate friend group combinations before officially landing on Isabella, Baljeet, and Buford as their mainstays. In fact, Buford was Phineas and Ferb's enemy until the episode "Raging Bully", which would have also been the first time Baljeet appeared in the show.
The first time the five of them, and only the five of them, were seen together was in the episode "Bowl-R-Ama Drama". During Season 2, the show experimented with introducing Irving to the cast as a sixth ranger, with him debuting in "Hide and Seek" and giving him a few episodes with him tagging along. However, he never really seemed to stick and eventually got demoted back to recurring character in Seasons 3 and 4. By Seasons 3 and 4, The Backyard Gang as we know it seemed to have been completely solidified, with the five of them persistently appearing together and only occasionally being separated. On such occasions, such as "Bubble Boys", "Bee Day", "La Candace-Cabra", and "It's No Picnic", the absence of any of the main cast members would be acknowledged as an oddity.
The roles of Isabella, Baljeet, and Buford would be most substantial in episode that would focus on one of them in particular and feature the rest of the gang helping them with an issue they may be having that day, (i.e. "Voyage to the Bottom of Buford" being about the gang helping Buford get his pet fish Biff back or "Primal Perry" being about helping Baljeet make decisions by creating clones of him.) Also, these later episodes would occasionally have a "guest of the day" episode, where one of the other characters would serve as the sixth member of the group, for an episode that focused on them, giving them somewhat of a day in the limelight. Episodes like this include "Oil on Candace", that featured Phineas and Ferb helping Django make a giant painting for his dad, "Nerdy Dancin'", where they helped Jeremy learn how to dance, and "Undercover Carl", where Carl went in disguise as a kid and played with them for the day.
Since then, this cast has hardly been negotiable with the five of them working together and never splitting ways for the rest of the series, and even carrying over into the revival with the same old cast, doing the same old things as before.
Fanon[]
The Backyard Gang is a well-received roster for the main cast of the show, by both the fans and writers alike, with these five kids serving as the main group in the vast majority of episodes and productions as well as most of the promotional material for the franchise. There is a total of 32 works on AO3 that utilize this specific grouping of characters as a friend group. This friend group serves as the mainstay for the overall franchise due to the on-screen chemistry between all five of the characters and the various interactions between all ten combinations of two characters in the bunch. The way the five of them all work together so well on helping turn Phineas and Ferb's daily inventions into realities truly helps to cement them as a strong group of outstanding friends. Although an official name for this friend group has been left up in the air, due to no such official label being given in the series canon, "Backyard Gang" or just "The Gang" is one of the most generally accepted terms for the quintet. Other terms given to them have been "The Group" and "The Troops" and even "The Boys", despite Isabella being included.
Many fanfictions have adapted a sixth ranger into the gang, either due to temporary tag-alongs being seen in a few episodes of the show, as well as unrelated characters being incorporated into the group, due to individual fanfiction writers just liking them that much. Such sixth rangers include but are not limited to; Django Brown, Irving Du Bois, Ginger Hirano, Candace Flynn, and even Perry the Platypus.
