Bilbo kept the Arkenstone hidden from Thorin as he started to become overcome with gold sickness. Bilbo hid away for a moment, but Thorin found him and assumed that he was holding the Arkenstone. Bilbo showed him that he was actually holding an acorn from Beorn's place, Thorin warmed by Bilbo carrying it all that way. Bilbo plans on planting it at his home, so that when it grows he'll remember everything from his time with Thorin and the others. Bilbo is about to tell him about the Arkenstone, but are interrupted by Dwalin.
Seeing how the search for the Arkenstone would lead to war, Bilbo snuck it to Bard and Thranduil, hoping the could use it to bargain with Thorin and end his madness. When they bargained for it the next morning, Thorin believed that it was a trick, but Bilbo came forward and tells him what he did. He knew that Thorin had become sick and was trying to get Thorin to remember who he was, but Thorin only see s Bilbo's betrayal. He attempts to throw Bilbo over the wall, but Gandalf distracts him long enough for Bilbo to sneak away himself.
Once the sickness breaks, Thorin joins the battle against the orcs, and is killed fighting Azog. As he lay dying, Bilbo comes to his side. Thorin apologizes for what he did, and for dragging him into so much peril. Bilbo says that he was happy to share in them, and Thorin tells Bilbo to go home after all this is over. He then dies as Bilbo sobs over the loss of his friend.

Bagginshield is one of the most popular ships within the Middle Earth fandom, and the most popular to come out of the Hobbit film trilogy. While there was likely shipping from those that read the book, most of the shipping started when the first film came out. As the films put more focus on the relationship between the two, and made it much easier for people to ship the two.
One of the most common types of fics for the paring are "Everybody Lives" fics. As given Thorin's death, many want to allow him to live so that he and Bilbo would be able to get together after the story. Though these fix it's typically also start to lead into the Lord of the Rings, which allows for the relationship to be added during the events of the trilogy.
On AO3, it is the most written ship for both Bilbo and Thorin. It is also the most written ship in the, The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit (Jackson Movies), The Hobbit - All Media Types and TOLKIEN J. R. R. - Works & Related Fandoms tags. There are currently 12000+ written works.
