Kid-Flash's origin story in the Young Justice universe is revealed in the comic of the TV series, Young Justice: The Early Missions. Wally was a fan of the current Flash, long before he learns that he is in fact his uncle Barry. After reading a notebook Barry had from his time as a fan and partner of the Flash before him, he decides that he wants to be Barry's sidekick. A sidekick Barry didn't want, knowing the dangers of being Flash and didn't want the responsibility of having a young partner, he turns Wally's suggestion down. Barry's notes had also contained the formula that turned Barry into Flash, from when he recreated the very formula Jay shared with him, Wally decides to do the same. Knowing that it would turn him into a Speedster and hope that it would convince Barry to reconsider. When Wally ended up injured from the explosion, Barry felt guilty from simply being his notes that led to this. A few weeks later Wally's new powers finally kicked in and couldn't wait to show his uncle. Who was more shocked than happy of the news, while Wally couldn't wait to bring up the idea of them becoming partners. Seeing no way out of it, now that Wally is a Speedster like him, Barry agrees. As long as Wally does exactly what he says and when he says it, being a Speedster hero isn't a game.

Some have viewed Flash & Kid-Flash (Barry and Wally) as the Speedster duo version of Batman & Robin and Green Arrow & Speedy. As they too are DC heroes with young sidekicks, who just happen to be members of the original Teen Titans.
Among Young Justice fans, there is a theory of Wally possibly being alive. When word of the series getting a new season came out, fans began to hope that it would have Wally return and get the chance to work with Barry and the rest of their hero allies again.
On AO3, BarryWally is the fifth most written ship for Wally. There are currently 300+ written works.
