Bruce and Kate are cousins who are part of Gotham's prominent families, the Waynes and the Kanes. On separate occasions when the two were at a young age, they both suffered traumatic events that involved members of their families dying. While Bruce's pain motivates him to become Gotham's protector, so no other child would go through what he had, Kate's pain got her to sign up for the military until she was forced out of it. With her life spiraling, coping with her life by drinking and doing drugs, she finds herself being saved by Batman. Inspiring Kate to channel her pain in the same way Bruce did, not knowing Batman was her cousin Bruce, and she created Batwoman. Bruce discovered who Batwoman was through his detective stills and because of the methods she used when Batwoman first started out, didn't approve of Kate's choice. The two were eventually able to work things out and welcomed Batwoman to the Batfamily. Bruce even revealing to Kate that he is Batman.

Kate being Bruce's cousin does have the Batcousins be compared with the Supercousins. Although Kate herself is not compared to Supergirl, outside from them both being cousins to the starting member of their family. Though Kate and Bruce's relationship is not explored as other familial relationships. Both within the Batfamily and in the larger DC fandom as a whole. This is due to Kate being a character not used as often as other Batfamily memebers, as well as Kate having less time as a Batfamily member. Due to her not being added to comics till 2005, as well as having a limited amount of page time with the Batfamily till the New 52. This is also where she and Bruce canonically became cousins, which is when more people started exploring their relationship within fics and art.
The lack of exploration isn't helped by Kate's lack of appearances in adaptive Batfamily media. And the few times she does appear, it's normally for either a short period of time, or not exploring her relationship with Bruce. Leaving fans with little to work with for fan works. Fans that do explore their relationship, often do it as more of a wider Kate as part of the Batfamily concept rather than just her and Bruce. With her often joining the kids in messing with him.
On AO3, there are currently 65+ gen fics.
