When arriving to the Hazbin Hotel and meeting Charlie, she asks Baxter if he's an inventor. Baxter clarifies that he's a scientist and not an inventor, and informs her that some might classify him as a mad scientist. Charlie reflects on how Sir Pentious was an inventor and bets that Baxter is just like him. Baxter expresses heavy distain for being compared to, in his words, "that pompous snake", and likes it to be known that they're nothing alike. However lot long after Charlie keeps referring to Baxter as Pentious which he's highly annoyed by.
Hazbin Hotel: Behind Closed Doors[]
After news of Pentious's redemption reached hell, Husk informs Cherri that Baxter spoke about knowing Pentious, and she goes to see Baxter to learn more about Pentious from him. When Cherri asked Baxter if he and Pentious were partners in a romantic scene, Baxter blushes and states that they were in fact lab partners, before telling her their story.
Not only were Baxter and Pentious lab partners, but they were also roommates who wanted to become overlords together, and were considered to be the brightest minds of hell. With Baxter focusing on bio-weapons while Pentious build high-tech weapons, on two separate sides of their shared room. The flashback reveals that Baxter was the one who helped Pentious to create the Egg Boiz, to serve as their minions and helpers in both sides of their work, that the two were fund of each other. Though at a science fair they had attended it with two projects than one that is a combination of their chosen fields, and when they challenged Zestial to a duel to gain recognition for their works, Pentious's cannon gets destroyed with ease while Baxter's bio creation withstood Zestial's attacks. This led to Baxter being hired by VoxTek and be praised by other attending sinners, while Pentious was left on the side line with his destroyed cannon. Afterwords Baxter began to do experiments on the eggs, but Pentious seeing the Egg Boiz as beings capable of feelings and emotions, he felt the need to protect them from Baxter. This resulted in the two ending their partnership and friendship, as Pentious leaves with the Egg Boiz and the bio-engineering technology Baxter used to create them, so he can create more of them. Along continuing turf wars without Baxter, and decided to focus on the sinner he has a crush on, as part of moving on from Baxter. Who also decided to simply move on, before he started to work with Vox.

Baxtious is a rarepairing of the Hazbin Hotel fandom, with CherriSnake overshadowing Pentious's other ships from being canon, while Baxter has been commonly shipped with Niffty before the second season was announced. Though there had been suspicion that Pentious and Baxter knew other, before it was confirmed in "Hazbin Hotel: Behind Closed Doors," giving the ship support.
Fans of the ship and the episode showing the Baxtious flashback liked the way how their shared lab has a similar energy to the split color schemed room from Netflix's Wednesday series, along with how it showed Baxter as someone in the dark and Pentious as somebody in the light. Some people have even made jokes of their ended friendship being a divorce and Pentious being the one who took the kids, to reference him walking away from Baxter with the Egg Boiz.
