Luz was told about Belos and the impact he has had on the Boiling Isles, before they met face to face. Belos was aware of the human child and that the captured Owl Lady would have entrusted the portal door to her. So when Luz was making her way to save Eda with King and Lilith, Belos separates Luz from her allies before demanding her to hand over the portal. Luz tried to fight Belos in an attempt to get past him and save her found family, but Belos would only let her do so if she agrees to trade the portal for their freedom. Despite Belos claiming that he doesn't want to invade the human realm, Luz didn't believe him and ensured that he doesn't get to use the portal after she gives it to him. Belos wasn't aware that she had place fire glyphs on it, until she pointed them out and then got them to damage the portal door. Luz also kept the key to it when she and the others made their escape. She also took pride that she had managed to save the chip Luz broke off of Belos's mask from their battle. While being unaware that Belos had started to fix the portal for his long awaited goal.
As Luz was trying to find away back home, after losing the portal door, she gets told about another human who came to the Isles before her. This got Luz to look into this human man she later came to know as Philip Wittebane, after she found his eaten journal and befriended the echo mouse who reveals what it had said. Believing that Philip was her best chance to learn how she could create a new portal home. While being unaware that Philip is the true name of Belos and that he is secretly a witch hunter.
Because Philip had his words make him sound like he was a good person, Luz was excited about the idea to travel to the past in order to meet him. Thinking that it would up her chances of getting back home. That was why Luz hanged into his every word and was amazed by his glyph combos when they met. Philip had saw right through Luz's cover story of her being a witch who also needed help from the Collector, and the only reason he let her and Lilith tag along was because he needed a sacrifice to distract the beast behind the sealed door. Lilith had tried to warn Luz that there was something oddly familiar about Philip that was unsettling. Along with Philip himself saying that the Titan may not have wanted him to know about glyphs, after Luz had taught him the light glyph. By the Luz realized that Philip isn't what he appeared to be, he had already got the mirror to Collector and then left her and Lilith for dead. He had tried to convince Luz to help him again, after seeing that the two had tamed the beast, but Luz wasn't going to fall for his lies again and smiled after Lilith punched him in the face. While Luz and Lilith were making their way back to their home time, however, the glyph she had taught Philip was what allowed him to make the mirror work. Setting the beginning of events that will lead up to him gaining trust and control over the Isles, before he will be able to destroy it.
When Luz found herself trapped in Belos's mind with Hunter and discovers a child Belos, she assumed that he might have been he embodiment of his guilt. Knowing that Belos had done many terrible things and following Child Belos only confirmed her suspicions. As she and Hunter see his past tricking and harming witches in order to gain their trust for his master. That Luz learns what that is from the memory of Belos talking about it with the Collector, along with her learning that Belos had repaired the portal and has the key to it. Luz is then confronted by the true Inner Belos, who had used his Child Belos form to gain her trust, before showing her the memory that confirms her horrifying suspicion. Belos is Philip and she had helped him to make the draining spell possible. Learning that he is a witch hunter before hearing him thanking her for teaching him the light glyph, deeply damaged her from the guilt he filled Luz with. Inner Belos had tried to get rid Luz before she could reveal his plans to everyone, but she had managed to escape his mindcaspe and had already told her found family. Forcing Belos to order the capture of Luz and and rest of the Owl House family, who all managed to escape his scouts and end up joining the rebel group against him.

After their first encounter in season one, people started to theories that Belos might had been Luz's father. From how Dell Noceda's existence in the series wasn't revealed until the second half of season two, along with people believing that Luz might have had some kind of blood connection to the Boiling Isles. To explain the strong magic Luz was believed to have since "Hooty's Moving Hassle" aired. The theory was scrapped after the series revealed Belos's brother and past, as well as revealing things about Luz's human family.
People's anger towards Belos rose after he wounded Luz in away that turned her from a happy full of energy teen, they fell in love with from season one, into a shell of her former self. With Luz being traumatized from what happened between her and the inner Belos, combined with the guilt of knowing that she had helped him meet the Collector. Along with making Luz think that she and Belos are alike. TOH fans, however, know that Luz is far better than Belos, as she was prepared to let her friends go and acknowledges when she has done something wrong, while Philip selfishly tried to keep the brother he slain all to himself and refuses to see the villain that his insecurity had turned him into.
