Shipping Wiki
This article is about the Looney Tunes ship. You may be looking for the Sly Cooper ship.

Benelope is the ship between Bugs Bunny and Penelope Pussycat from the Looney Tunes fandom.

Canon[]

The pairing is exclusive to the 1995 short Carrotblanca, which is in itself a parody of the 1942 film Casablanca. Bugs is cast in the role of Humphrey Bogart's Rick Blaine, while Penelope takes up the part of Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa Lund.

Bugs, known as Mr. Bugs, is the owner of an American-style cafe. He is approached by Tweety, who asks him to hide a very important document. Bugs refuses, until Tweety mentions that it will bring him into contact with a "lovely lady". This sparks Bugs' interest, and he readily agrees. Penelope, known as Kitty, enters the cafe with Sylvester and takes a seat at one of the tables. She instantly draws the attention of Pepe Le Pew, but tries to fight off his advances.

Sylvester disappears to find a waiter, and Penelope calls out to Daffy Duck, who is seated at the piano. He is shocked to see her, and tries to hide. Penelope is unfazed, and asks him to play her favourite song. Daffy hits a single note on the piano, and Bugs comes running over. He yells at Daffy, telling him to never play that song. Daffy quickly accuses Penelope of being the one to request the song, and Bugs sees her for the first time. They gaze into each other's eyes, and Bugs flashes back to their past romance together. They are seen driving, dancing, and eating. Eventually, it is shown that Penelope broke up with Bugs via a letter just before he was meant to board a train. Devastated to see Penelope again, Bugs begins heavily drinking carrot juice.

Penelope returns that night, begging for help from Bugs as Sylvester has been taken in by the police. Bugs refuses to help, but when Penelope starts to cry he gives in and declares himself a "sucker". He arrives at the jail and tricks Yosemite Sam, the police general, into locking himself up. Bugs helps Sylvester escape, and they head to an airfield to meet up with Penelope.

Penelope pulls Bugs aside and says that she's afraid to leave him again. Bugs encourages her to go, saying she'll regret it if she doesn't. Before they can say a proper goodbye, Sylvester grabs Penelope and drags her onto the plane. The plane takes off, only for Kitty to discover that Pepe is one of the flight attendants. He again attempts to romance her, and Kitty screams and jumps off the plane. She lands back on the airfield, beside Bugs, and the two share a passionate kiss.

Fanon[]

Very little exists in the way of fanworks for this pairing. This is likely because the ship only exists in a single short, and any sort of romance between the two was possibly overshadowed by the release of Space Jam and the introduction of Lola Bunny a year later. The most dedicated fanbase for this pairing seems to be on Deviantart.

There are currently no works for this pairing on AO3.

Trivia[]

  • Penelope was presumably cast as Bugs' love interest due to being the most prominent recurring female Looney Tunes character at the time the short was produced. Bugs' recurring love interest Lola Bunny wasn't introduced until 1996's Space Jam.
