Book of Puns is the het ship between Carlos Ramon and Dorothy Ann Hudson in The Magic School Bus fandom.

Canon[]

Carlos Ramon and Dorothy Ann Hudson are two of the eight (nineteen in the books) core students in Ms. Valerie Frizzle’s class at Walkerville Elementary School. Their relationship is defined by a push-and-pull of personalities—Carlos’s imaginative and slightly annoying personality often clashes with D.A.'s methodical reliance on research, which leads to constant bickering with the two, although they have several moments that could show hints of affection.

In "Blows Its Top", the class works to assemble a giant globe. Dorothy Ann stands apart, instead paying attention to the instruction manual. Abruptly, Ms. Frizzle is launched from a model volcano which causes the globe to collapse. When Dorothy Ann points out to Carlos that one piece is still missing, their exchange escalates into an argument. Carlos teases her for prioritizing research over helping out, while she counters that research would've helped put the globe together. Later, they race to name a new island, with Carlos joking about "Carlos Island" while D.A. insists on scientific naming. This leads to her to losing her books to the sea after Carlos hops onto a raft and splashes water with force. Shortly after, she pleads, "I’m nothing without my books!", this is a moment where Carlos’s teasing softens as they work together.

In the same episode, Carlos continues to read Dorothy Ann's books and Arnold is convinced that Carlos is starting to sound just like Dorothy, and in Arnold's imagination Carlos all of a sudden gets her blonde hair and pigtails.

Similarly, in "Makes a Rainbow", Carlos constructs a rainbow using flashlights and colored candy wrappers, boasting it will outshine all others, while Dorothy Ann dismisses this, doubting any relation between colors and light. Carlos proves his point by shining a red flashlight on her rainbow painting, claiming it improves it. She rejects the notion, insisting, "Color is color and light is light, like you and me—they have nothing in common," (which she later discovers is wrong). Carlos then challenges her with, "Says who?!" but she stands firm. He further teases her by snatching her book and mocking its purple color, prompting her to correct him an say that it’s technically violet.

Though, there are subtle hints of affection throughout the show other than arguments, like in "Gets Ready, Set, Dough", where Carlos hugs Dorothy Ann in the end and tells her she's a brilliant chemist. In "Spins a Web", Carlos says, "The spider hides in his cave until he sees something juicy and- Gotcha!" before grabbing her ankle.

Towards the ending of "Inside the Haunted House", the class performs at the sound museum, and when Carlos takes his turn, his instrument produces a distinctive, harmonic tone, culminating in a dramatic thunderclap (created by a shoe striking a trash can lid). The audience erupts in applause for the performance, and Dorothy Ann hugs Carlos and tells him that it was the perfect sound.
