Prep and Goth are childhood friends. One day, Prep complains to Goth about how he's over being single which prompts Goth to claim it's easy. The two see Nerd trip and drop his books and Goth helps him up and notices that the stickers on Nerd's book are from an anime. Nerd rants about how he got the stickers before he gets flustered and asks Goth if he wants to watch the second season with him. Goth and Nerd exchange phone numbers, and Goth tells Prep that that's how you get a boy's number.
Prep, bitter about how Goth and Nerd, trips while walking by Jock. Jock catches him and asks if he wants to go to a coffee shop. Prep obliviously turns him down and only realizes later that Jock was flirting with him.
Jock notices Nerd reading by a basketball court and calls out to him. He winks and says, "This one's for you!" before shooting a basketball. It goes in and Jock tries to shoot it again, but hits someone. Jock gets punched by the person he hit and receives a kiss from Nerd.
Prep throws a party that Jock is invited to, and he gets Goth to help him. Goth tells Prep that he should go drink or something if he feels nervous talking to Jock. Prep does as advised. Jock notices Goth and asks him to dance. Goth drops his drink and pins Jock to the wall. The two go to Prep's room and play Jenga.
Prep sits down on a bench and Nerd sits beside him. Prep vents to Nerd about the situation with him and Jock and Nerd reassures him. Prep tells Goth that his boyfriend, referring to Nerd, is too cute.
Goth, who didn't think Nerd was his boyfriend, thinks about what Prep says while Nerd sits in his lap. Goth tells Nerd that he really likes him. Nerd tells Goth that he romantically likes him too along with his roommate and the guy who always plays basketball in the court. Nerd tells Goth that he won't force Goth if he's not into polyamory. Goth says that he's not opposed to the idea because he thinks Prep and Jock are attractive too. Goth suggests that they should try hanging out before getting Prep and Jock into anything, and Nerd agrees.
Goth brings Prep to a restaurant, where Nerd and Jock are. Prep runs away to the bathroom after seeing Jock. Jock goes to the bathroom, and him and Prep clear up the misunderstanding before going back to Nerd and Goth. The four hang out at the arcade where they all have fun.
The individual relationships between the four develop. While Jock is at Goth and Prep's place, Prep falls asleep on Goth's shoulder. Goth talks with Jock and tells him that there's nothing wrong with being okay with your partner being intimate with others. He mentions that he talked about the same thing with Nerd and that if Jock is interested with adding more people to his relationship, he can talk to Goth anytime.
After waking up, Prep realizes that he has a boy problem, he caught feelings for Jock, Nerd and Goth. He decides to talk with Jock about it, and the two realize that they both have a crush on the same two guys, Nerd and Goth. Jock tells Prep what he talked about with Goth and asks Prep if he wanted that. Prep agrees and the four meet up to discuss it. They agree to date, but they all realize that they have no relationship experience. They decide to talk about it more the next day. Nerd kisses Prep and Jock before leaving with Goth.
The next day, they meet up again and start with establishing some ground rules. They decide to be open with each other and allow themselves to be openly affectionate with each other. They also decide to keep their relationship closed, so that they won't be dating random strangers.
Later, they decide to go to the amusement park. Prep gets some cotton candy when they arrive, to which Nerd states that he wants some too. Goth then takes a bite of Prep's cotton candy, surprising and angering him. Goth then tells him to take it (the cotton candy) back, and Prep complies, kissing Goth. Nerd and Jock watch with interest. After this, it is revealed that Prep nearly forgot that they were dating, and Goth didn't expect Prep to kiss him. Jock then looks at his map, so that everyone can decide where they want to go. Goth suggests that they go to the haunted house, and everyone agrees, and Goth jokes that they have a big, strong boy to protect them. After he says this, Prep and Nerd instantly begin clinging to Jock.
They arrive at the haunted house and go in. Prep then says that it isn't that scary, but Goth replies that he was just freaking out a minute ago. However, Nerd gets scared, and Jock tells Nerd to stay close to him. Then, there's a jumpscare, causing Jock to get scared, and leap into Nerd's arms. This causes the two of them to collapse. Prep and Goth stare, poker-faced.
After they leave the haunted house, Prep states that he didn't expect Jock to be such a scaredy cat. This causes Jock to say that he's not, and that he just gets startled easily. Jock was hurt from the fall, so they decide to rest for a bit as Goth hands him some water. Nerd apologizes to Jock for not holding him up, and Jock says that it's okay, and that he's sorry for jumping on Nerd in the first place. Nerd asks Jock if he is okay, to which he replies that he is, but a little winded from hitting his head on the way down. Nerd then kisses Jock to make him feel better. Goth and Prep were watching, and Goth says that he wants a kiss too. Nerd jokes that they need to get hurt first and then they'll be kissed.

Boyfriends is a popular ship since it's the main focus of the webtoon's plot. It became more popular when Boyfriends became a Webtoon Original and the ship was introduced to a lot more people. The various ships within the Boyfriends are also popular due to how the webtoon focuses on the individual relationships between the four. While most of the art of the ship is from refrainbow, the creator of the webtoon, there is a little bit of fan art. There is also a little bit of fan fiction, as there are 8+ works on AO3 of the entire polycule.
