— Jaime Lannister to Brienne

Braime is the het ship between Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth from the Game of Thrones fandom.

Canon[]

Brienne and Jaime first interacted after Lady Catelyn Stark, who Brienne was in service to, ordered Brienne to escort Jaime to King's Landing and be traded as a hostage for her daughters, Sansa and Arya. They are accompanied by Jaime's cousin Cleos Frey (Alton Lannister in the show). Brienne defends Jaime from danger ably, though in the show especially, she acts somewhat aloof and almost hostile at times.

During their trip, Brienne learns much about Jaime that is not known to most of Westeros. They are ambushed by outlaws on the Duskendale road near Maidenpool. Cleos is killed and Jaime tries to take advantage of the situation by escaping from Brienne. He is surprised that she is stronger than him (though he is manacled and out of practice), but their fighting is interrupted by a mercenary group called the Brave Companions. The outlaws chop off Jaime's hand, and he begins to despair for his life, but Brienne convinces him to live on. In return, Jaime does all he can to spare Brienne from being raped.

They are taken to Harrenhal, where they share a bath. Jaime recalls how he stopped the wildfire plot of King Aerys II when he tried to burn down the city, which almost no-one else knows. In the books, he notes that he can strangely feel "his cock stirring beneath the water." Jaime is sent on his way to King's Landing by Lord Bolton, but returns to Harrenhal for Brienne after dreaming of her. She is put in the bear pit of Harrenhal to fight a bear with nothing but a pink dress and a dull sword. Jaime soon rescues her.

The two safely arrive to the city, though are shocked to learn that both Lady Catelyn and King Joffrey are dead. Jaime has Brienne arrested for her own protection after Loras Tyrell threatens her for her alleged role in the death of Renly Baratheon. Jaime comes to see her and thinks that the septas have made her look absolutely beautiful in a blue dress. He sends her on her mission to find Sansa and Arya, but not before giving her a Valyrian steel sword, Oathkeeper, that was given to him by his father. Along with this, she is given two bags of gold and a signed letter from the king explaining her royal mission.

Brienne and Jaime spend the two next novels apart, though their journeys in the Riverlands are parallel to one another. While at Crackclaw Point, Brienne wishes that Jaime had come with her on the journey, before knowing that his place is with the king; meanwhile, Jaime confronts Red Ronnet Connington at Harrenhal after he hears him insult Brienne. While captured by the Brotherhood without Banners, Brienne meets an undead Catelyn, called Lady Stoneheart. She tasks Brienne with killing Jaime Lannister; Brienne refuses and is sentenced to die, but when she sees her squire Podrick choking she chooses to follow Lady Stoneheart's orders. She meets Jaime at Pennytree and asks her to follow him so that they can save Sansa from the Hound.

Fanon[]

Braime's popularity began in the year 2000 with the release of the 3rd novel from George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series called 'A Storm of Swords', well before the debut of HBO's Game of Thrones in 2011. In 2013 the fandom experienced an even bigger surge in popularity during the airing of season 3 which was based on Martin's novel 'A Storm of Swords'. Braime has remained a Game of Thrones top 5 ship ever since. Rival ships for fans of Jaime and Brienne are Lannicest and Briemund. Many fans like it for the "Beauty and the Beast" symbolism, which George R. R. Martin had written an adaptation for before working on A Song of Ice and Fire.

On AO3, Braime is the most written ship for both Jaime and Brienne. It is also the most written ship in the A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones (TV) and A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms tags. There are currently 10000+ written works.
