Unlike the other Robins that have fought beside Batman before going off on their own under a new title, Tim didn't start off as one of Bruce's wards as he still had his parents for a few good years before tragedy struck his family and became an orphan, like Dick and Jason before him. This has Bruce taking Tim in as his third son, turning their mentor and mentee relationship to one of father and son. There have also been other versions and universes that have Tim being orphaned at a young age, before he meets Batman and has Bruce adopting him when Tim is still a kid. Due to Jason's death, however, Bruce didn't want to train another Robin until he realised that Batman needs a Robin, as much as Robin needs Batman. So to ensure that Tim doesn't get killed like his predecessor, Bruce doesn't let Tim join him on the field until he is fully trained. Noticing the dark change in Batman when Jason "disappeared" was what got Tim to build a case to uncover his identity, in hopes that he'll be able to help the Dark Knight. Tim continues to home his skills of obsession, along with improving his tech skills rather than focusing on brute force like Batman. A choice Bruce does not discourage, as he had tried to drill powers of obsession into his previous Robins for the detective side of the mission.

In the Main Prime universe, Tim was there when Bruce had met his first Robin and didn't try to contact him, until the Dark Knight had lost his second Robin years later. Tim took it upon himself to do something when he noticed the dark way Batman was acting when Robin stopped showing up.

Before Tim and Batman meet, Tim had found one of his dissuaded baterangs and kept it to help defend himself when he was felt on his own by his father. Tim had even stuck up photos of Batman in his home apartment, showing that he admired the Dark Knight like other children his age do. When Tim got captured by Two-Face and his thugs who were about to kill him, Batman's arrival allows Tim to make his escape but stayed close when he noticed that Batman was injured and needed his help, as Tim had tried to warn Batman of the thug who hit him and then later did his best to keep him from drowning. This led to Tim being brought to the Batcave, he had imagined seeing many times. As Alfred tends to Batman, he asks the butler about the boy he brought back with him, caring about him more than himself. Tim wondering up steers when the two were distracted was what got Tim to discover that Bruce Wayne is Batman, before Batgirl shows up and shows the two the items Tim tried to steal. Tim reassures them that he can keep a secret and then tries to help when discover what Two-Face is up to. Batman had a check on Tim's father when Tim came down and hears him and Batgirl mention the body that was found. While Batgirl tired to sugar coat it for Tim, Batman went with honesty from knowing the pain of losing one's parents. Even though Batman wanted to keep Tim in the safety of the cave with Alfred, seeing the Robin suite in its glass case was what got Tim to aid Batman and Batgirl as the new Robin. Despite not being too pleased with Tim's stunt and how cocky he was during the battle, as it had allowed Two-Face and his thugs to get the jump on him, he allows Tim to continue on as Robin and trains him up under his rules. Along with him adopting Tim as his ward, like Dick before him.

This family-ship is mostly focused on the Batman: The Animated Series, from how it had Bruce adopt Tim as a kid while the comics had Tim living with his parents before and after he became Robin. Until they got killed and had Bruce making teenage Tim an official member of his makeshift family. Along with there being fans who prefer to have Batman work beside a young Robin than an adult Robin. Hence why some people had moved onto Damian when he became the next child to become Robin. The two appearing the Young Justice also has BruTim be supported in its fandom, as well as the DC Comics fandom from those who prefer the comics alone or other adaptions of the DC Universe the two have appeared in together. Because there was little to none interactions between Brace and Tim in the Titans series, however, the family-ship isn't used or focused in that fandom very much.
On AO3, there are over 2700 gen fanfics on them.
