Bruno is Dolores' maternal uncle. While they don't have any one-to-one interactions in the movie, there are still hints as their relationship, mostly through how Dolores talks about him.

Bruno was present for the first half of Dolores' life, and then disappeared when she was 11. At some point during this time, Bruno used his Gift of future sight to give Dolores a prophecy about her future. According to Dolores' verse in "We Don't Talk About Bruno," the prophecy stated that the man of her dreams would be "just out of reach, betrothed to another." (This turns out to be Mariano Guzman, engaged to her cousin, Isabela. Dolores, like many others in their community, had taken Bruno's prophecy as set in stone, and was mourning the loss of her true love. In the end, it turned out the prophecy was just about a betrothal, not marriage, and Dolores still ends up with Mariano in the end.) IT is unknown how they might have interacted during Dolores' childhood. Film director Jared Bush has stated that, despite Bruno loving all his nephews and nieces, he was distant from the family even before his departure.

Dolores has the Gift of super-hearing, and the movie shows that she can hear Bruno in his hiding spot within Casita's walls. When Mirabel is asking for answers about the magic's failure, Dolores responds with: "The only one worried about the magic is you...and the rats talking in the walls." During "We don't talk about Bruno," Dolores also sings that she "can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling/I associate him with the sound of falling sand." At the end of the movie, when Bruno returns home. Dolores nudges her brother Camilo and exclaims "I knew he never left, I heard him every day!" Since Dolores is characterized as someone who is bad at keeping secrets, some have wondered why she never told anyone about Bruno. Bush has addressed this as well, stating that Dolores was confused about what she was hearing, and since the rest of the family kept saying he was gone, Dolores was unsure and unable to tell anyone, until she was validated in the end.

Since there are no direct interactions in the film, the Encanto fandom stepped up to fill in the gaps. Many headcanons arose from the idea that Dolores could hear Bruno behind the walls for ten years. Before Jared Bush addressed it, many fans believed that Dolores may have been a secret friend to Bruno during his wall years, whether he was aware of it or not. Many fanworks depict her snaking food and various mementos to him, or talking to him in secret. There is also a very popular headcanon that Dolores would listen to the "telanovelas" that Bruno would perform with his pet rats, and that she would get unironically invested in them. In some fanworks, Bruno would be aware of this and even take feedback from her. After he comes out of the walls, Dolores would ask him to continue, getting other family members such as Mirabel, Camilo, Antonio, Luisa or Pepa involved as well.

There are also plenty of headcanons and speculations about Dolores' childhood and her relationship with Bruno. Despite what Bush has said, fans like to depict Bruno as being a present uncle for the kids' childhoods, one who would always play with them. With Dolores, fans made a connection between them, as they are the members of the family with the most inconvenient Gifts, ones that may hurt them more than they help anyone. Fans pointed out that they were the only two to have door portraits with their eyes open rather than peacefully closed, and that their Gifts both involved their senses. Thus, Bruno would be most understanding of Dolores. As a fairly quiet person himself, he might be easier for her to be around, and perhaps the gentle noises of the sand in his room would be relaxing for her.

There's also plenty of context about Bruno's prophecy for Dolores, with some portraying how it would have been like for her to receive it. Other fans like to examine the aftermath, when Dolores has already ended up with her man, and she either scolds or teases Bruno about how his prophecy was incomplete.
