Jonathan and Will are brothers and are the sons of Joyce and Lonnie Byers. When Jonathan was 15, he became the father figure of Will after Lonnie's absence in 1982. He showed him the song Should I Stay or Should I Go, which would become Will's favorite, and eventually I give him the mixtape of the song. When the two overheard Joyce and Lonnie arguing on the phone because the latter hadn't come home for 4 weeks, Will deduced that his father wasn't coming home, and Jonathan encouraged him not to worry so much about it as he doesn't even like baseball. Will responded by saying that even if he doesn't like it, sometimes it's fun to accompany him, but Jonathan insisted again saying that he and Lonnie never did anything that he really likes, and I advise him not to like something just because people like it, much less his father.

Season 1

After Will disappeared and was abducted by the Demogorgon, Jonathan and Joyce searched for him throughout the house and the forest. Later Jonathan took many photos of Will to create wanted posters. Jonathan felt very guilty for Will's disappearance because he wasn't home to make sure he got back safely. The next day, Jonathan was already posting wanted posters for Will around his school. When he was driving to Lonnie's house to see if Will might be there, he was listening to the song from Should I Stay or Should I Go and recounting the times when he heard the song with Will. I get to Lonnie's house, only to find nothing no matter how hard he searchs, while Lonnie replied that he didn't call him because he assumed he forgot where he was and didn't know how to take care of himself. Jonathan, very angry, continued to defend his brother, saying that there were search teams and that his father did not care at all about his son's disappearance, and gave him a poster for Will "in case he had forgotten what he looked like". Later he kept trying to find Will in the woods taking pictures there, without success. After the police find a body that looks like Will in the river, Jonathan got desperate and locked himself in his room listening to music while crying. When Jonathan and Joyce went to see Will's presumed corpse the next day, Jonathan couldn't hold it there any longer and left to later talk to Hopper about his concern and his mother's mental state. Despite his disgust at Will's death, Jonathan fully accepted his death, unlike his mother, and told her to accept reality and arrange a funeral for Will. When Jonathan was already at Will's funeral and Nancy came there to tell him about Barbara's disappearance, she showed Jonathan her photo of Barbara, on which there was a figure that looked like a person, and told him that she herself was a once he saw a figure of a faceless man, so Jonathan became suspicious again thinking that his mother was right and Will was still alive. He polished Barbara's photo and saw the monster, realizing his mother was right and regaining hope.

Fanon

The first two seasons, the fandom often focused on Will and Jonathan's relationship. Especially noticing what a good brother Jonathan is. After the third season, the fandom didn't pay much attention to them together, due to their small interactions in canon. After the fourth season, most of the fandom started paying more attention to Willel, but still not forgetting Jonathan. Many people liked the scene in the back of Surfer Boy Pizza where Jonathan comforts Will.
