Byuksan Trio is the friendship between Yeon Sieun, Ahn Suho, and Oh Beomseok from the Weak Hero fandom.
Canon[]
Webtoon[]
Chapter 26
The friend group started when Stephen Ahn (Ahn Suho in the Korean version) first approached Gray Yeon (Yeon Sieun in the Korean version). The two are in the same homeroom for their third year at Byuksan Middle School. Stephen watches as Gray calmly studies despite the class going crazy around him due to a fight. Stephen recalls having seen Gray on the podium for awards for his excellent grades. He considers Gray to be reckless since he writes to the point where his fingers blister.
Stephen approaches Gray and points out how he is studying not because of any clear goal he has. He brings up the Great Hunger and also claims to be able to get first place, which Gray doubts since Stephen is currently ranked 23 in the academic rankings. On the next monthly exam, Stephen scores first place, beating Gray.
Chapter 27
After that meeting, Stephen begins to hang out with Gray. They play soccer, eat together, and play video games together. Gray is influenced by Stephen without realizing it. Stephen tells Gray that he helps others because since it makes everyone happy, it makes him happy, and that it was self-satisfaction. He tells Gray that he can tell him all about it because he feels like he's the only one who could understand all of him for who he is. Gray realizes that Stephen, who had the maturity and impartiality unlike any other middle schooler, was the one who completely filled the hole in his heart.
One day, during lunch, Stephen notices Bryce Oh (Oh Beomseok in the Korean version) sitting alone and tells Gray they should sit there. Stephen happily greets Bryce and says they should eat together.
Chapter 28
Since that day, Bryce puts in a continuous effort to hang out with Gray and Stephen. When Bryce notices some students mocking Stephen, he also insults him. Gray feels an unpleasant repulsion by Bryce's words but reasons with himself that Bryce is only saying that because of his long-time, deeply-rooted inferiority complex. Gray sympathizes with Bryce and doesn’t know that, for certain occasions, sympathy is highly unnecessary.
Bryce also overhears two girls fangirling over Gray and Stephen and wonders what's the difference between those two and himself. The next day, Bryce changes up his appearance and no longer wears his glasses and now slicks his hair back. He tells Gray that his frantic efforts to keep his grades up are sad and obnoxious. Gray justifies Bryce's cruel words as speaking without a filter since they're friends. Even though Stephen genuinely comments that Bryce's new look is good, Bryce gets annoyed by him.
When the three play video games at Gray's house that afternoon, Bryce says that it's boring and that they hang out like losers. He laughs at Stephen and says that he's the dumbest out of the three of them, but Stephen just laughs along and brushes the insult off. Stephen studies for the next monthly test and manages to score first place again, scarring Bryce's ego and pissing him off. Bryce begins to bully students lower than him in the power hierarchy, and Stephen immediately steps in when he sees him bullying Donny, further angering him. Gray and Stephen failed to notice Bryce’s deranged ego.
Chapter 29
Gray and Stephen's deeper bond of the friendship group is shown when Stephen gives his performance evaluation to Gray and takes the corporal punishment instead. Bryce is annoyed that Stephen was willing to take a beating for Gray. Bryce had accidentally grabbed Gray's homework and despite knowing students without it would be punished, he never gave it back to Gray.
Later, after Bryce gets Oswald Yang (Yang Seonghun in the Korean version) some shoes from the United States, Oswald invites Bryce to hang out with him and his gang. Bryce considers Oswald's gang to be cooler and from that day forth, he drifts away from Gray and Stephen. After a few days, Stephen notices Bryce hasn't been hanging out with them lately and Gray tells him that Bryce hangs out with Oswald’s squad and that he even smokes. Stephen says that doesn’t sound like Bryce. That night, on the way home from Gray’s house, Stephen comes across Oswald, Bryce, and the third guy beating up and stealing from Donny.
Chapter 30
It's revealed that Bryce has been telling Oswald lies about Stephen talking shit about him, resulting in Oswald attacking him. Stephen wonders why Bryce hates him so much. Oswald beats up Stephen while Bryce smugly watches. Bryce didn’t care about the truth as long as he could repair his petty ego. Bryce hated those with gifts and just wanted to pull them down. The situation is amusing to him and that is all he cares for.
The next morning, Stephen tells Gray to stay put if anything happens in the classroom, not wanting him to get roped into it. Gray notices Stephen's pained expression that he has never seen before and can tell that Stephen is trying to mask it with a smile.
Chapter 31
Bryce’s admiration for Stephen had turned into jealousy and then hostility and then to contempt, resulting in him telling lies to Oswald. While Gray is at the teachers' room, Oswald and Bryce beat Stephen up. Gray receives a text from Stephen saying that he’ll go home early that day. Stephen begins to distance himself from Gray. Stephen is worried that if Gray stayed close to him, Gray would become the gang’s target as well. It is painful for Gray to watch Stephen slowly fall into a darker place. No matter how many times Gray asked, Stephen wouldn’t tell him about anything that was happening to him.
The bullying also takes place outside of school grounds. They beat up and insult Stephen at a construction site to the point where Stephen limps away once he is finally allowed to leave. The next morning, the entire class laughs at something that neither Gray nor Stephen knows about.
Chapter 32
Bryce has made a group chat that includes everyone in Class 3-4 except for Gray and Stephen. The group chat insults Stephen and Gray and says there must be something going on between those two and calls them disgusting. Gray realizes that he and Stephen were oblivious to the fact that a majority of their classmates, under the lead of Bryce and Oswald, ridicules them in the group chat.
When class ends, Gray catches up to Stephen. Stephen tells him that he could be Oswald’s next target if he’s near him. Gray yells that he doesn’t care and doesn’t want Stephen to avoid him. Stephen apologizes to Gray for getting him roped into the mess but Gray says it isn’t his fault. Stephen thinks he might break if Gray ends up getting hurt too and tells Gray that he’s good at taking hits and to not worry about it.
Gray snaps and yells at Stephen to quit acting like he’s okay. He says his face is always covered in bandages and mentions the things everyone in class has been saying behind their backs. Stephen tells him it’s gonna be alright and thinks to himself that Gray becoming a target is his fault. He thinks that he needs to turn their eyes all towards himself so that they don’t target Gray.
Oswald had told Stephen that if he scored a zero on the monthly exam, he'd stop bullying him. However, when the month exam scores are revealed, Stephen places first in the entire school with a perfect score across all subjects. The moment sends chills throughout Gray's entire body.
Chapter 33
At the Olympiad, Gray begins his test and declares that he’ll be like Stephen and he won’t lose. While Gray is at the Olympiad, Oswald, Bryce, and the third guy in their gang order Stephen up to the roof. It's unknown what they exactly did, but Oswald says that they only scared him and didn't push him, and claims that Stephen lost ihs balance and fell on his own. He tells Bryce and their friend that as long as their stories match, his city representative dad will make sure there isn't a problem.
Upon finishing the Olympiad, Gray is notified of the incident via their one good classmate, Jeremy Park (Park Jihan in the Korean version) and Gray rushes to the hospital. He silently stands by Stephen's side for an hour with a blank face. As he leaves the hospital, he wonders that just like how he had seen a light in Stephen, did Stephen also see a light in him, or was he lonely in his own world. He finally falls to his knees and breaks down into sobs.
Chapter 34
Oswald and Bryce show no remorse about Stephen's fall since they got away scot-free. Gray falls into depression and misses school for two whole months. When he returns, the bullies joke that since Stephen isn’t around, he’s been bored. He jokes that maybe he should visit him at the hospital to see if he’ll come back from death at the sight of them.
Chapter 35
After beating up Oswald and the third guy, Gray waits for Bryce and acknowledges his presence when he finally arrives and sees the two unconscious bullies.
Chapter 36
Bryce is shocked that Gray managed to defeat those two. Gray walks over to Bryce and kicks him in the shin. Bryce cries out in pain and grabs his leg. Gray grabs Bryce by the hair and says he is the most unforgivable. Gray begins slapping Bryce. Unlike Oswald and the other thug who at least put up a fight, Bryce can’t even look at Gray in the eye after seeing his “superiors” fallen in front of him. Gray repeatedly slaps Bryce and demands to know why Bryce did that to Stephen.
Gray continues beating Bryce up, but this time he is using his fists instead of just slapping him. Gray says he didn’t want to hit him with his hand but now his hand is dirty because of his blood. Gray throws Bryce with the other unconscious two students and uses Stephen’s tape to wrap them up. He repeatedly and brutally kicks Bryce in the face to the point of disfigurement until an admin arrives.

Fanon[]
When webtoon fans write about the trio’s friendship, many people write it the same as canon, sometimes with a few modifications such as more moments added before Bryce’s betrayal. Some people write Gray getting an even more brutal revenge than in the webtoon. In alternate universes where Gray is the one who falls from the roof instead, Stephen throws away his pacifistic ideals and brutally beats Bryce, Oswald, and the third guy up. Some people also write about an alternate universe where Bryce never betrayed them.
