- Everyone in my life has changed.. Promise me you won't.
- —Vi to Caitlyn in Arcane Season 2, Episode 3
CaitVi is the femslash ship between Caitlyn Kiramman and Vi from the League of Legends fandom.
Canon[]
Arcane[]
Act II[]
Vi and Caitlyn met in Act II of Arcane. Caitlyn, who just a few episodes before struggled with the limitations of her youth, finally cemented herself as an officer within the Piltover Enforcers by the end of Act II.
When they met, trust was a big issue for both of them, given that the topsiders and the people in the undercity don’t see eye to eye and because Vi was arrested and spent years in Stillwater and when she was younger her parents were killed by the enforcers.
When they went inside the brothel, Vi, being the charismatic thug that she claims to be, checks Caitlyn out, corners her on the wall, then proceeds to tell her “you’re hot, cupcake” and gives Cait a crash course in selling herself to people so that they can give her the information they need. Vi then asks, "so what will it be, man or woman?"
When Vi came back to the brothel, she saw Cait in her peripherals, nestled comfortably with a woman. One of the writers of the show confirmed that Vi went through a lot of emotions at that time. The two struggled to maintain common ground while venturing through the streets of Zaun in search of Silco and Jinx due to the restraints Caitlyn and Vi had for one another. The divide stemmed from the lack of understanding regarding their two drastically opposing lifestyles, but the rift between the two shrunk during their time in the undercity.
Though not entirely understanding Vi's plans nor how to traverse the undercity, Caitlyn steps up to search for a way to tend to Vi's wound that Sevika gave her during their fight, even going as far as to trade her rifle for a potion that could save her new friend's life. The two create coordinated mayhem to escape Silco's grasp when he ambushed them in a part of Zaun that housed to the people "the topsiders don't want to think about." As they escaped, Vi spotted the blue flare she gave her sister in Act I.
Caitlyn is consistently ridiculed by her fellow officers as not belonging in their ranks, as well as tampering too heavily in places she doesn't belong—which may bring the downfall to Marcus's corrupt scheming with Silco. This sense of curiosity is what drives Caitlyn, enabling her to have a chance encounter with Vi and learn about the secrets about Silco that the Sheriff of Piltover had been hiding from the city.
At first, Vi was just focused on finding her own sister Jinx, so she doesn't really pay much attention to Cait who keeps following her. Vi recklessly charged towards Sevika, because that's the only way she could get answers, by using brute force and violence. She doesn't have much knowledge about the Shimmer and what it can do to people, so the stab on the stomach came unexpectedly, but not a surprise anymore. She doesn't know how Cait found her, but she just did, ultimately saving her from the foe.
Though not entirely understanding Vi's plans nor how to traverse the undercity, Caitlyn steps up to search for a way to tend to Vi's wound, even going as far as to trade her rifle for a potion that could save her new friend's life.
When Vi was writhing from pain after taking a small dose of Shimmer as a medical drug to help cure her stab wound, Caitlyn was there to ease Vi out if it by caressing her cheek with a thumb. The two then seemed to have a moment while staring into each other's eyes, before Caitlyn broke it. The two create coordinated mayhem to escape Silco's grasp when he ambushed them in a part of Zaun that housed to the people "the topsiders don't want to think about." As they escaped, Vi spotted the blue flare she gave her sister in act one.
Caitlyn had damaged the relationship with the acquaintances she had in Piltover to embark on this private investigation. She also lost Vi—and their blossoming connection—to the kidnappers, leaving the Piltover enforcer all alone with no support system on the streets of Zaun. Vi warned her the undercity was "going to eat her alive." With Silco on her trail and no way to defend herself, her situation looks bleak.
Act III[]
During Act III, Caitlyn gets the Hextech Gemstone, asking Ekko if she can present it to the Council—and, more importantly, to her old friend Jayce. After getting the Gemstone, she goes back to the Kiramman residence alongside Vi, and the two discover the crystal is missing. Even then, the two present their case to the council and ask them to take down Silco.
Vi and Caitlyn had similar character arcs in Act III. Like Caitlyn, she gets abducted by Ekko at the end of episode six. Unlike the enforcer, however, Vi doesn't feel scared since she knows Ekko is behind the mask. She talks about the conditions of the undercity that have worsened after Vander's death and agrees to appeal to the council with Caitlyn.
She backs out as she was crossing the bridge into Piltover to go find her sister. She rushes back for Caitlyn after she hears the commotion between the duo and the enforcers, angering Jinx in the process. Caitlyn didn't let Vi down and proved that she was sincere about helping the Zaunites and in healing their city in general.
The two then meet up in Caitlyn’s bedroom, where Vi meets Caitlyn’s parents, Caitlyn introduces her parents to Vi before they have a talk in private.
As the two are waiting to meet with the council about Silco, Vi and Caitlyn lie on Caitlyn's bed. Vi confides in Caitlyn about how she always told Powder that she'd be there to protect her, yet she ended up abandoning her. Caitlyn comforts her by caressing Vi's face and Vi holds her hand.
After the Council decides not to help them, Vi breaks her relation with Caitlyn, quoting they are not compatible to each other, them being "Oil and Water" and tells her to forget her. Caitlyn later thinks about this scene later while in the shower unable to forget about Vi.
When Jinx kidnaps Vi, Caitlyn and Silco, she refers to Caitlyn as Vi's "girlfriend". Jinx also brings in Caitlyn to her dinner with Vi, whom she kidnapped earlier, and the Hexgem she stole. Then, Jinx shows Vi two chairs, one with "Jinx" written on it, the other, "Powder". She asks Vi where should she sit, saying it's her choice. She would give up being Jinx and sit in the Powder chair on one condition: Vi had to "get rid" of Caitlyn.
Vi refused, offering her sister an alternative instead. Vi pleads for Caitlyn's life, urging Jinx to run away with her. Silco tries to convince Jinx that he won't give her up, and that it's the two of them against the world, including Vi. Caitlyn manages to free herself and hits Jinx, pointing her guns to her face. Vi screams that she should stop because that's her sister.
Reluctantly, Caitlyn doesn't do anything, which ends up making Jinx attack and knock Caitlyn out, and Vi, determined to save both of their lives, tells Jinx to remember about her past, which makes her show her instability and also remember her trauma. During this confrontation, Jinx ended up getting more and more worked up and overwhelmed until she ended up losing all control and just started shooting, which results in her killing Silco.
As soon as he was gone, Jinx adopted a cold, steely demeanor. Sitting down in the chair labeled "Jinx," she told the frightened Vi: "I thought maybe you could love me like you used to, even though I'm different. But you changed, too. So, here's to the new us."
While all of this is happening, Jayce has called a council meeting and put to the vote the proposition of giving Zaun its independence. As we see the councilors raise their hands, one by one in approval, we also see a rocket, shot by Jinx, head straight for the council. At the end at the series, Vi and Caitlyn walk together, terrified at the council's fate, especially Caitlyn, since her mother was part of it.
Arcane Season 2[]
Act I[]
We can see them being affectionate in the new opening of the series. Caitlyn, sorrowful following the death of her mother leans on Vi for comfort and support. We can see them caressing each other's cheeks and hugging each other quite often. At the end we see them in the same enforcer squad together.
In Episode 3, Caitlyn and Vi share their first on-screen kiss after an emotional plea from Vi that Caitlyn won't change. Preluding their fight, after expressing betrayal that Vi would side with Piltover and don the enforcer uniform for Caitlyn, Jinx tells Vi, "I know you're sweet on her. I hope you got a chance to.. you know.. before..", indicating that both have feelings for each other and should have slept together by now. By the end of the sisters' fight, Vi and Caitlyn have an argument over Caitlyn's disregard for a child that had been in the way of her shot, and denounces Vi for being just like every other Zaunite. This altercation ends with Caitlyn violently hitting Vi with the butt of her rifle so hard she falls to her knees. Caitlyn leaves, leaving Vi alone, sobbing on the ground heartbroken.
Act II[]
Episode 4 opens on the reveal that Caitlyn has started a sexual relationship with her subordinate Maddie, but she seems to be less engaged in the relationship and shies away from Maddie's affection, as she's still preoccupied with capturing Jinx.
Episode 5's intro shows us the new turbulent lifestyle Vi has adopted after losing the last of her loved ones. She becomes a pit fighter in Zaun and starts binge drinking as she spirals further into senseless violence, hallucinating Caitlyn as she passes by Kiramman clan banners and dances in The Last Drop with strangers. Her memory of Caitlyn is from before the hunt for jinx had begun, and faintly remembers their heart to heart in Caitlyn's bedroom as she drifts off.
In episode 6, they reunite when Vi is investigating Singed and his work with Ambessa, at the same time Caitlyn is working with Ambessa to hunt down Warwick. After a brief fight, Caitlyn briefly flusters at Vi calling her cupcake for the first time since their parting. When Vi tells Caitlyn the bioweapon they've been hunting down is actually her father, Vander, the two hatch a plan to take Ambessa by surprise and prevent her from halting their rescue of Vander. The plan succeeds, until Warwick's healing is undone and he goes into a frenzy at the same time Ambessa returns to find Caitlyn having betrayed her for Vi. In a fight with Noxian soldiers, Vi is injured and Caitlyn runs to her aid.
Act III[]
In episode 8, Caitlyn's distrust of Jinx leads Vi to bypass the guards and release Jinx herself. Tricked, Jinx escapes and instead locks Vi. Caitlyn later arrives at the cell to a glooming Vi, who berates herself for her stupidity. Caitlyn reveals she intentionally redeployed the guards, calling her predictable. Impassioned by the revelation, Vi kisses Caitlyn and they have sex. The final scene of the series shows Vi and Caitlyn presumably living together, where Vi states that she is the dirt under Caitlyn's nails and that nothing is going to clean her out.
League of Legends[]
In LoL, Vi's story is very different from what is shown in Arcane, especially regarding her past. Her biography on the official League of Legends website states that she doesn't remember her childhood, and doesn't even know who her parents were, having grown up in an orphanage. Even her name wasn't really hers, but a consequence of the tattoo on her cheek. Likewise in Arcane, she is involved in criminal acts, although in the lore version she is part of a gang before forming her own. Furthermore, her relationship with Jinx is similar like in Arcane as they are siblings.
The character's big turning point comes when she plans a heist on a chemistry baron's mines, which ends up in conflict between her and a rival gang. The story goes that she took out the entire gang by herself, making her reputation in Zaun even more legendary.
From this it is not explained how she leaves Zaun, being only said that she disappears at a time when tension between the two cities was particularly high.
Several rumors indicated that she had been killed in an explosion, while others said that she abandoned her friends to go to distant lands. The truth was only revealed when an extremely violent gang, responsible for several murders in Piltover, was ruined by Caitlyn, the sheriff of Piltover, and her new partner—none other than Vi herself. The biography itself reaffirms that no one knows how or why Vi came to work with Caitlyn. All that is suggested is that the partnership has something to do with Jinx.

Behind the Scenes[]
- Interviewer – “You have spoken on Reddit and Twitter about the now-famous line, “You’re hot, cupcake,” and how there was debate about if it was true to the characters. What were those discussions like, and, ultimately, what led to you keeping it in the episode?”
- Arcane Writer, Amanda Overton – “I always wanted “You’re hot, Cupcake,” to be in the episode. That line was in my very first draft! I received the note several times that the same sentiment could be said in body language or subtext, or that Vi wouldn’t be so direct with emotions. But it was something I didn’t want to leave open to interpretation. Women who are attracted to women have experienced all too frequently what it’s like to have our feelings buried in subtext for all eternity, and Vi’s emotions here are actually very important to the story we were telling. Vi makes many decisions about Caitlyn later on that only make sense if her feelings for her are strong. I do think we were able to execute the line in a way that fits Vi’s character, thanks to Hailee’s great performance, the direction of the scene, and the wonderful animation.”

During a Q&A event with fans on Twitter, Amanda Overton was asked by a CaitVi fan about the popular fan theory that "something happened" between Vi and Caitlyn on the night Vi was at Caitlyn's house. So she replied:
- “If you pay attention to timing, Vi and Cait arrive at Caitlyn’s house in the morning and present to the council that same evening. They are both exhausted and frayed, emotionally and physically. We don’t show the whole story onscreen intentionally. Up to you to decide.”

In a Q&A interview on BAFTA’s Twitch channel,[3] Arcane co-creators, Alex Yee and Christian Linke, spoke about Caitlyn and Vi’s future in the series. They said the team behind the series has been methodical and intentional with the pacing of the relationship, but that the next season will expand upon it in ways that will make fans of the pairing “happy.” “I think I can figure out how to answer this question with the correct degree of vagueness,” Yee said. “We have always wanted to tell an organic story about Caitlyn and Vi that feels like it’s really true to how we see them, and how they’ve been seen. The way in which we wanted to roll that story out has always been sort of determined. What you will see in Season 2 will be part of the big picture that we’ve had all along.” Linke added that Caitlyn and Vi are “at the center of the stories that we tell in Season 2. I think you’ll be happy.”
Fanon[]
Ever since both characters were released a decade ago, fans have been speculating about their relationship in the lore and their intimacy in specially some of their game voice lines. With the release of Arcane, their interactions, and the success of the series made the ship grew expandedly. Riot has been hinting at a possible deep connection from them since the beginning. We've witnessed Vi referring to Caitlyn as "Cupcake" in LoL, stating that they are so much more than just partners. Arcane Act 2 built up the relationship between both characters, and just like in the game, we saw Vi calling Caitlyn with her nickname in the show.
Furthermore, in the final Act of Arcane, we saw both Caitlyn and Vi implying their feelings for each other multiple times. When Vi was captured by Jinx, she refers to Caitlyn as Vi's girlfriend, and it was her love for Caitlyn that she refused to shoot her with Jinx asked her to.

Trivia[]
- Vi has several secret interactions with Caitlyn in the game.
- Allied Caitlyn: Each gains the cosmetic buff, "On The Case: Piltover's Finest".
- Each gains +1 movement speed while near one another and each gains +1 bonus gold if both of them participate in a kill.
- Three unique phrases in response to an allied Ace in the Hole
- Enemy Caitlyn: If Vi taunts while near an enemy, Caitlyn will perform one of two special taunts. Doing so gives a cosmetic debuff to Caitlyn called "Agitated: How Agitating", which remains until Caitlyn damages Vi or Caitlyn dies. Three unique phrases in response to an enemy Ace in the Hole which hits Vi, but does not kill her.
- Each gains +1 movement speed while near one another and each gains +1 bonus gold if both of them participate in a kill.
- Cait's death voicelines in LoR and LoL both say "Tell Vi that I—" while she gets interrupted in a very emotional tone. This may implies her true feelings towards her partner and that she values her enough to think of her even before she is dying.
- When Miss Fortune jokingly flirts with her in LoR, Vi replies "Heh, try cupcakes." in response to Miss Fortune saying "Vi! I should have brought flowers", which might be a reference of Caitlyn's nickname, since Vi gave it to her.
- In Wild Rift, Vi tells the player she got a date tonight, and her partner doesn't likes when she is late. Caitlyn is shown to be very punctual.
- In LoR, in a conversation between Caitlyn and Jinx, Caitlyn says she'd never betray her own partner, referencing Vi. Shockingly, Jinx replies "Your own WHAT?".
- In the game, in the map Howling Abyss, if you enter the store as VI, the shopkeeper (Hermit) says "Do you and Caitlyn get along or not? Seems ambiguous."
- In RiotXArcane, when you first meet Vi, she says "I also help Cait... uh, i mean the sheriff, when she needs me". The player has a option of replying that they both seem to make a great team.
- When Caitlyn kills Jinx in the game after her VU, she says "Peharps Pilltover can rest easy without you, Jinx. But Vi...". This clearly shows that very much like in Arcane, Vi in Lol lore stills love her younger sister deep down.
- Caitlyn has a line about the first move with an Ally with Vi. She says "I'm glad you'll have my back, Vi. Let's keep the chaos to a minimum, shall we?"
- Vi has a line when taunting an Enemy with Caitlyn. She takes out a teacup from inside her gauntlet, takes a sip, then throws it on the ground. She then says "Care for a spot of tea? Or maybe a spot of punch in the face" and "Oh, look at me... I'm on the case".
- When Caitlyn kills Vi in the game, she says "I never wanted this, Vi..."
- Upon using Cease and Desist when an ally Caitlyn uses Ace in the Hole on the same enemy, Vi has some interesting voicelines.
- "Yeah! Teamwork!"
- "High five, cupcake!"
- "Boom! Headshot.
- Vi also has some voice lines when she survives an enemy Caitlyn's Ace in the Hole attack.
- "Nice shot, cupcake."
- "Aww, was that supposed to hurt, Cait?" and "Nope!"
- Allied Caitlyn: Each gains the cosmetic buff, "On The Case: Piltover's Finest".
- During Valentines Day, they were one of the ships that had a skin sale in the Brazilian server.[4]
- Both Vi and Caitlyn are one of the few champions who can apply crowd control on themselves.
- In Arcane, Caitlyn is taller than Vi[5] However, in game and in some official artwork, Vi's model is taller than Caitlyn.
- In Arcane, Vi and Caitlyn are around the same age.[6]
- Arcane's co-creator and creative director, Christian Linke, is a big CaitVi shipper, often retweeting CaitVi fanart on his twitter account.[7]
- Amanda Overton, one of Arcane's writers, it's also a huge CaiVi fan, often tweeting about the two of them.[8][9]
