Redding Weddy[]
In a flashback during World War II, the Captain is seen a group of soldiers until his Lieutenant, Havers, walks in and hands him a envelope. Captain opens it to find that France has surrendered, he instantly drops the letter and starts to panic believing that the Germans are coming but Havers tries to comfort him saying that he doesn't think they'll be coming just yet. Havers then suggests that they should initiate the emergency lockdown protocol which The Captain agrees to. Havers commands the group of soldiers to get to their duties on Captain's behalf which they then proceed to do. Captain expresses to Havers that these are exciting times and that they'll stand a chance against the Germans. However, Havers informs Captain that he wants to get involved in the fighting that that he's put in for a transfer for the North Africa front. Captain is devastated by the news that he's leaving but supports his decision.
In present day, Captain walks in on a group of the ghosts watching a moon landing documentary and asks Pat what's going on, he replies that he's keeping the group busy while Alison and Mike dig up the garden. This makes Captain become fearful as he hurries to the garden to stop the pair from digging. Captain informs Alison that there's something buried down there that is potentially explosive if it gets out and Alison reluctantly complies and asks Mike to clear the other side.
In another flashback to the war, the Captain is looking hesitantly at an envelope with "William" written on it until he hears a sudden knock on his office door and invites the person in while quickly hiding the envelope in his jacket. Captain is happy to find Havers entering his office and says that he was just thinking about him and the two discuss the emergency lockdown, that is going well. They then both at the same time express that they need to tell the other something, the Captain offers Havers to go first. Havers tells Captain that he's leaving him at 1800 hours in the evening, which Captain is shocked by that he's leaving so soon. Captain encourages Havers to fight well while in North Africa, and then expresses that he'll miss him...before nervously correcting that him and the team will miss him. Havers asks Captain if that's all with he lowly confirms, as Havers turns to leave the room, Captain expresses him that it's a shame that they won't get to finish the operation together which Havers smiles and gives a light nod at before leaving the room. The Captain then takes out his envelope and gives a heartbroken look.
Back in the present, Captain notices that Fanny is distressed and asks if she's alright. She confesses him that she's become attracted to someone, which the Captain mistakes to be him and starts telling her that he's very flattered but says that he was a lot of problems of his own at the moment before Fanny instantly expresses that she's not attracted to him. Fanny anxiously says that she doesn't know what to do, Captain advices her that nothing good can come out of this and that she must take that emotion, bury it and never let it out. This takes him to a flashback where he's standing outside, holding his envelope above a hole in the ground and throw it in in the hole.
Later, Mike is seen setting fire to the garden waste, when the Captain sees this he is clearly distressed and warns Alison to get away and telling her it's a bomb where Mike set fire to. As Alison manages to yell at Mike to get back on time, Captain runs and jumps to the fire to cover it up. There is a huge explosion which creates a crater in the garden, Captain admits that he was caught up in the moment. Captain reveals to Alison and the rest of the ghosts that there was a prototype limpet mine buried and it was so secret that only he and his second-in-command, Lieutenant Havers knew about it but sadly adds that he left him... before nervously correcting that he just left for the front, which means he had to bury it on his own and called the plan 'Operation William'.
Later that evening, when the group is watching a film, Alison turns to the Captain, who is sitting at the windowsill, and whispers "here's to buried secrets". Captain gives her a smile and looks out the window, and reminisces watching Lieutenant Havers leaving for North Africa through the main gates of Button House. The Captain gives a bittersweet nod and smile.

Fanon[]
Capvers is no doubt the most popular ship in the fandom. The ship instantly grew from the Series 2 episode "Redding Weddy" as it was the first glimpse into The Captain's past and relationship with his Lieutenant. Considering how tragic their romance was, this led fans to come up with AUs and fanart of them in happier scenarios such as playing cricket like they did when they were alive.
There are currently 960 works for this pairing on AO3. It is the most popular ship for both the Captain and Lieutenant Havers. It is also the most popular ship in the fandom overall.
