Cassette Dad is the family ship between Charlotte Emily and Henry Emily from the Five Nights at Freddy's fandom.

Canon[]

Charlotte "Charlie" Emily is the daughter of Henry Emily, one of the owners of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. To keep Charlie safe, Henry builds a animatronic known as the Puppet and gives his daughter a bracelet for Puppet to identify her with, should Charlie ever find herself in danger. With Freddy's having one death under its roof, Henry didn't want his child to come to harm. When some mean kids decided to lock her out of the building and kept Puppet trapped in their box, however, Charlie ended up being murdered, and by the time Puppet finally broke free they could crawl towards her lifeless body. Henry was grief stricken by this and disagreed with his parent's choice to keep Freddy's opened, as many other children began to disappear while the animatronics started to act up.

Years later Henry discovers that his daughter was killed by none other than William Afton, while Charlie's soul ended up lacking onto Puppet during her final moments of life. Knowing that Charlie's soul won't be able to move on as long as her killer is left wondering free in the springtrap suit he died wear, he forms a plan to set her free. Along with freeing the souls of the other murdered children, while sending his ex-partner's soul to hell where he won't be able to harm anyone else ever again. Henry also prepared to die for his plan, so he and Charlie can be together again after the animatronic her soul became trapped in is destroyed.

In the alternate adoption novels of the main series, Henry Emily fell into despair after his three year old daughter was murdered by William Afton, forcing Henry to close the diner they co-owned. Henry poor his grief into a ragdoll she loved and as he fell into madness Henry began to treat Ella the doll like it really was his Charlie, creating a "spark of life" as the doll becomes a sentient from Henry's grieving. To make his self created illusion feel real, Henry uses his skills to recreate his late daughter by placing Ella in the animatronic dolls he creates to serve as "Charlie's" stages of life (toddler, child, teen, adult). Through a camera tripod Henry creates false memories for her, making Charlie believe that it was Sammy, Charlotte's twin brother, who was taken than her and to ensure that she truly believes that she is the real Charlotte Emily she was modelled after. Henry even filled these Charlotte dolls with fake blood, so they can appear more human than machine; should Charlie ever get hurt in ways that may cause one to bleed. Henry's wife taking their son with her when she left, from wanting nothing to do with her husband's none healthy illusion of their dead daughter, helped to make the lie believable. The robotic Charlie is unaware that she is an animatronic doll that is powered by Ella, even though she had asked her father if the robots he dismantles for parts feel pain from it.

One of the toys Henry had made for Charlie is a copy of Ella that comes out of the smallest closet in her room holding a tea tray, while the other two closets were kept closed. Leaving Charlie to wonder what was in them and why she has three closets. The location of the fourth closest that holds her final stage form, however, was kept hidden from her. Despite what happened to the real Charlotte Emily at the diner, Henry agreed to open a Freddy's restaurant in the town he and Charlie moved to, so they could start over. Henry taught Charlie how to safely remove a springlock suit, knowing how dangerous they are when not handled carefully. When children started to disappear at Henry's restaurant, one of the children being Charlie's friend, he was named a suspect before being cleared.

Henry was deep in his madness when he started to recreate his late daughter, but as he continued to work on her future stages of life forms he started to realize what he was doing is wrong during the teenage doll stage and becomes angrier when building the adult stage. Which led to the adult Charlie to become a sentient from Henry's rage and deems her as "wrong" before sealing her away, with the attention to never let her out. This realization being combined with his wife leaving him and the other tragedies that have befell upon him, Henry builds a robot to end his life. Although Henry's sister didn't agree with the recreation of her dead niece when Charlie was first shown to her, she takes her in and keeps her brother's illusion alive. By raising Charlie like she truly is her niece and allowing her to "grow." Along with her taking Charlie away from Hurricane, and as they went to the house to pick things up for Charlie before their move, Charlie believes that they were there to pick up some of her clothes. While leaving behind the toys Henry had made for her. Despite Jen doing her best to cover Charlie's eyes from the sight of her father's body, she was still able to see Henry's "suicide robot" hovering over his pool of blood while holding the knife it used.

Years later when a teenage Charlie returns to Hurricane, it begins a series of events that lead to her uncovering the truth of her origins. After Charlie makes a quick stop to the abandoned house she and her father lived in, before meeting up with her friends, she begins to have dreams of Henry's death and their time in the house while a question her young self had once asked him echoes in the background; "Does it hurt?" When she returns to the house again with her friend John, Charlie finds some old photos of the Emily family, that were out of order in her opinion. Being back in Hurricane brought back a lot of old memories to Charlie, some of them being of her late father. That have him being both happy and sad.

Because not much of Henry and Charlotte's father-daughter bond was explored in the games, part from Henry knowing that Charlie is someone who looks out for others and loves her as any father would, some FNAF fans turn to the alternate adoption novels of the Charlotte chronicles. From how their story plays a key role in the trilogy. Even though the Charlotte they followed from books one to three wasn't Henry's real daughter in the end, fans still like to see her as the person Charlie would have been if she had lived.

On AO3, Cassette Dad is the second most written ship for Charlie. There are currently 240+ written works.
