Cathmir is the femslash ship between Catherine and Shamir Nevrand from the Fire Emblem fandom.
Canon[]
Fire Emblem: Three Houses[]
Past[]
Shamir first met Catherine when she joined the Knights of Seiros as a way to settle her debt to Archbishop Rhea. Catherine, already a knight to payback her own debt to the Archbishop, tried to greet Shamir with friendly conversation. This was met with coldness as Shamir thought Catherine to be an egotistical knight with no skill, leading Catherine to think that Shamir would be difficult to work with. This changed the first time they fought together, when Shamir realized the wielder of Thunderbrand was actually skilled while Catherine saw how well the former mercenary supported her. This led to the two becoming a great team.
White Clouds and Non-Crimson Flower routes[]
The two would become embroiled in the events surrounding Garreg Mach Monastery's Class of 1180. Working as agents of the Church, they assist the class led by new professor Byleth on their various missions - and can even be personally recruited by them. These events would come to a head when one of the house leaders - the now Adrestian Emperor Edelgard von Hresvelg - declares war on the Church of Seiros by trying to take Garreg Mach. Catherine and Shamir join in trying to defend the Monastery but are ultimately forced to retreat. Five years after the battle, the two would reunite with Byleth's class and assist them in ending the war.
Support Conversations[]
After telling a funny story to Shamir, Catherine is slightly annoyed about her not laughing along with it. This prompts her to tell Shamir that she should be friendlier. Shamir asking if she "needs" to be friendlier prompts the two to reflect on when they met and their initial impressions on each other. The trip down memory lane gives Catherine the idea to let Shamir handle the fighting while she hangs back, a prospect that Shamir points out would leave her with more work. At that, Catherine notes that they're partners and have to get along - which Shamir has no objections towards.
Later on, in the aftermath of a battle, Catherine remarks to Shamir that - while the enemy put up a good fight - it wasn't enough and soon all of the Chruch's enemies would be destroyed. That boast prompts Shamir to ask if Catherine is that devoted to the Church of Seiros...or to Rhea. Catherine gets annoyed at Shamir for being dismissive of the Church and Rhea, reminding her that it was Rhea that saved her. Shamir counters that Catherine becomes blind and reckless whenever Rhea is involved - a prospect Catherine rejects and says is merely her being focused. Realizing she's still being stubborn, Shamir assures Catherine that she doesn't care as long as she doesn't die or cause her trouble. Catherine misunderstands that as being her dying would cause Shamir trouble, but decides to drop the argument as it's clear nothing's happening. Shamir agrees, but notes how difficult it is to help someone with different beliefs.
Sometime later, Catherine approaches Shamir to talk with her. Shamir immediately assumes the discussion is going to be about their different ways of life and quickly shuts it down. After an awkward silence, however, Shamir agrees to listen at the exact time Catherine decides to talk anyway. With the go ahead given, Catherine explains why she's so devoted to Rhea and admits that it means she wouldn't be a good partner for Shamir. The former mercenary, for her part, notes - while she would choose Catherine if it were a choice between her and Rhea - she would save herself before Catherine, thereby reaching the same conclusion. Catherine notes she would also try to save herself but interrupts herself when she realizes that Shamir - being unlike the other Knights of Seiros - could potentially leave in worst-case scenarios. Seeing that worry, Shamir notes that what lies ahead is a mystery but reminds Catherine that, until their paths diverge, they're partners - which she couldn't be happier about.
After Shamir returns following a mission, Catherine expresses gratitude that she's alright. When Shamir asks why she's acting like that, Catherine admits that their previous talk left her fearful about what would happen if Shamir really were gone - something that Catherine admits is scarier than if Rhea was gone. Shamir admits how unusual it is to see Catherine so afraid but can see how passionate she is about them being partners, prompting her to reveal that she lost a partner before and that the experience taught her to cherish any bond she makes. Catherine, having also lost someone personal, is thankful for Shamir's words. With the heartfelt talk over, Shamir offers a potential next move: marrying if Catherine is so worried about her. The suggestion floors Catherine, prompting her to leave and get some air.
Following the end of the war, Catherine and Shamir leave the Knights of Seiros and begin travelling together. Their travels would eventually lead them to Shamir's homeland of Dagda. Along the way, they faced many trials - many of which caused by themselves being too nosy in righting wrongs. However, the combination of their skills would prove to be able to defeat any foe.
Crimson Flower[]
Should Byleth side with Edelgard in her fight against the Church of Seiros, Catherine and Shamir would fight against the Black Eagles Strike Force, albeit in separate battles. Shamir is killed when the Church sends a force to try and retake Garreg Mach while Catherine is fought during the final battle in Fhirdiad, where she serves as one of Rhea's guardians. If Byleth manages to recruit Shamir before Edelgard's declaration (Byleth can't recruit Catherine on this route due to her devotion to the Church), she and Catherine instead fight against each other in Fhirdiad. As they prepare to fight, they muse how they knew it was only a matter of time. After a final commiseration of how different their lives were, the two clash. Whether the battle ends with either of them dying is unknown.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes[]
Catherine and Shamir can only be together on Azure Gleam, as it is the only route in which Catherine is playable. The two have a single support conversation heavy with sentimentality and nostalgia, in which they express how much they missed each other. They're also part of a paralogue involving Jeralt, Gustave, and Alois; there, they talk about the old times and tease each other a bit. It's clear that they cherish each other deeply.
In Scarlet Blaze, Catherine is not recruitable, but she and Shamir appear in chapter 9, where they're sent to assassinate Emperor Edelgard. During their showdown with the player, the two argue as they try to protect each other from being killed, and Shamir allows herself to be recruited to the Empire in order to save Catherine's life.
Fire Emblem Heroes[]
Catherine and Shamir are two of the heroes that the player can summon separately via the Breidablik using orbs to help Alfonse and his sister Sharena defending their kingdom Askr from the Emblian Empire. As in their original game, Catherine and Shamir can develop a bond via support. They can raise their level of support in the following ranks: C, B, A and S if they stand together in the gameplay. Shamir has an additional solo variant beyond her base form and the two of them make-up a Duo Hero.
The two received a summer-themed Duo Hero variant - where they work together as one unit - in the "Summer Longing" focus from June 2023. In the associated paralogue, Catherine and Shamir are enjoying some drinks on the beach when they're approached by Ephraim asking if they've seen a woman with green hair and a pretentious air - L'Arachel - to which they say they didn't. The two do, however, find L'Arachel a short while later and confirm that is who Ephraim was searching for. Later on, in the associated Tempest Trial, the two remark on how calm the beach is - only to be swiftly accosted by multiple Garreg Mach students as well as Rhea and Byleth. As Shamir notes how it's officially become a school event, and disparages at how they were supposed to be having time to themselves, Catherine points out how all three houses are happy together. Shamir admits that she's not displeased about the sight, prompting them to join the impromptu banquet.
In addition, the two of them are fought together in both the fourth and fifth parts of Book IV's Chapter 12. They're also the focus of both a Bound Hero Battle and Skill Studies map.
Quotes[]
- “People in Dagda marry whoever they want—regardless of gender. You OK, partner? You're blushing.”
- — Shamir (& Catherine): Heartbeats United Castle quote in Fire Emblem Heroes
Fanon[]
Cathmir is a very popular ship in the Fire Emblem fandom. Fans going through their support conversation were quickly hooked on their dichotomy of proud knight/silent archer and stayed for when said proud knight expresses her fear of Shamir leaving. Shamir's (albeit joking) suggestion of the two marrying - and Catherine's flustered response to it - was the final nail for fans to go all in with support of this ship.
On AO3, Cathmir is the most written ship for both Catherine and Sharmi. There are currently 390+ written works.
