Celeborn and Galadriel met after Galadriel’s arrival in Middle Earth from the Undying Lands. Celeborn lived in Doriath, realm of the elven king Thingol who was Celeborn’s kinsman. Galadriel and her brother Finrod were welcomed into Doriath due to being descendants of Thingol’s brother Olwe. Galadriel and Celeborn fell in love, and Galadriel would remain in Doriath partly because of this even after Finrod established his own realm of Nargothrond.
Celeborn and Galadriel were betrothed, but due to the customs of the Eldar did not marry while the then-ongoing war with Morgoth lasted. The pair played little part in the War of the Jewels, and ultimately left Beleriand for Eriador some time prior to the fall of Nargothrond. When the war ended, Galadriel was forbidden from returning to the Undying Lands and did not desire to do so given that she would be forced to reside on the lesser island of Tol Eressea. Celeborn, for his part, had no wish at that time to leave Middle Earth, and so the couple remained there and married.
The two lived for a time in the elven kingdom of Lindon, before returning to Eriador and ruling over a small community of elves. At some point, Galadriel bore Celebrian, the pair’s only known child. The family later settled in the realm of Eregion, as Galadriel sensed the stirring of Sauron in the East and believed that all the Free Peoples must join against it. Celeborn consented to this move despite the proximity of the dwarf kingdom of Khazad-dûm and his own dislike of dwarves.
During their time in Eregion, Celeborn and Galadriel established ties with the elf kingdom that would one day be known as Lothlorien. Galadriel later traveled there with Celebrian after Sauron, in disguise, turned the leaders of Eregion against her. Celeborn stayed behind in Eregion, as Galadriel chose to pass through the mountains by way of Khazad-dûm. The family was later reunited following the War of the Elves and Sauron when Galadriel and Celebrian joined Celeborn at Imladris, also known as Rivendell.
The family dwelt in Imladris for some time before traveling East, settling in what would later become Dol Amroth and visiting Lothlorien. After the War of the Last Alliance, Celebrian married Elrond of Rivendell, and Celeborn and Galadriel took to traveling in the lands east of the Misty Mountains. Eventually they did take up residence in Imladris again. But after the dwarves were driven from Khazad-dûm and the elves of Lothlorien were left kingless, Celeborn and Galadriel took up residence as the Lord and Lady of that people.
Messengers later came to tell Celeborn and Galadriel of the Fellowship of the Ring, whom they later welcomed into Lothlorien. In so doing, the pair agreed to lift a long-imposed ban against dwarves entering the realm. After learning of the fall of Gandalf in Moria, Celeborn briefly lamented this kind gesture. He repented, however, at Galadriel’s reproof, and apologized to Gimli for words spoken in deep sorrow.
Galadriel and Celeborn eventually summoned the Fellowship to discuss their departure from Lothlorien. The next day they met the Fellowship again as they prepared to leave by boat, and ate a meal with them. During the War of the Ring, the two led the defense of Lothlorien and the subsequent counterattack on Dol Guldur. Celeborn led the host of Lothlorien in battle, but it was Galadriel who threw down the stronghold of evil.
Celeborn and Galadriel were among the elves of Rivendell and Lothlorien who travelled to Minas Tirith for the wedding of their granddaughter Arwen. This party, joined by others, also visited Rohan and Isengard before beginning to break up. By this time, Galadriel had been given leave to return to the Undying Lands and desired to do so. Not yet ready to leave Middle Earth himself, Celeborn bid farewell to his new grandson-in-law by expressing the hope that, unlike Celeborn, he would not be parted from his “treasure.”
Galadriel indeed sailed for the Undying Lands only two years later, while Celeborn remained behind in Middle Earth. Ultimately, however, Celeborn would depart Middle Earth at last and be reunited with his wife.
