History[]

With her left eye and wings cut out by Lute as punishment for sparing a sinner child, Vaggie was abandoned in Hell in an alleyway before Charlie approached her, unknowingly mistaking her for a sinner who had a close call from an exorcist. Overcome with sympathy she bandaged her left eye, shyly, and helped her out in dire times. From then on, Vaggie kept her Exorcist identity secret from Charlie, but they grew to be close friends who eventually gained mutual feelings and started a relationship together. According to Charlie, for years she shared all her secrets, thoughts, grievances, and even which deodorant she likes most to Vaggie throughout their relationship.

Pilot[]

ChaggiePilot1

Charlie and Vaggie are in a relationship and they also work together in the same work project. Since the beginning, Vaggie is shown to be extremely supportive of Charlie's project of creating the hotel to redeem demons, the Hazbin Hotel. When Charlie goes to Katie Killjoy's news show to promote the Hazbin Hotel, Vaggie and Charlie share some intimate moments in the dressing room where Charlie is getting ready, Vaggie asks Charlie if she remembers what she'll say and Charlie excitedly tells her that she does. Vaggie's protectiveness of Charlie is quickly showcased when she grabs her girlfriend by the shoulders and tells her that she can mouth the speech for her if she starts feeling unsure, because she deeply worries about her and wants her to do an amazing job. Charlie reassures her that she's sure of what to say, although she mentions that she just wants to make things more exciting. So in excitement, she gets really close to Vaggie and asks "what if I-" Vaggie completes her sentence asking if she plans to sing a song about it. And this makes Charlie boop her nose in a cute way, saying "you knew I was gonna say that", to which Vaggie replies that it's because she knows her. Which shows how well they know each other, their desires, fears and most intimate things about their personalities.

Charlie excitedly gets on top of the table and says she's better at expressing herself through songs. But Vaggie, still worried for her and wanting for her to succeed, tells her " but life isn't a musical, hun." Charlie insists, showing her a plan she made on a paper, but Vaggie just keeps firm on her stance, protective of Charlie. Charlie reluctantly agrees and goes to the studio to prepare for her live appearance on the TV show. Charlie happily extends her hand for the show host to take, but she refuses saying she doesn't "touch the gays". So as soon as Charlie begins to talk, Vaggie is there watching her behind the scenes, supporting her all the way. She even punches a camera person as soon as they insult Charlie.

ChaggiePilot2

Vaggie continues to be supportive of Charlie when everything goes terribly bad with her promotion of the Hazbin Hotel. Later, they get on a limousine with Angel Dust and Vaggie keeps yelling at him for getting out of control and making Charlie look bad as a result. Charlie, knowing Vaggie so well and being perfect at calming her often powerful outbursts, puts a loving hand on her shoulder and tells her that everything will be alright, so it's best to relax. Later, when Charlie sees Alastor come by the hotel, she gets horrified and quickly asks Vaggie what to do. Despite the fact Vaggie tells her not to let him in, Charlie curiously opens the door to him and as soon as he steps in, Vaggie gets defensive of Charlie and her life project, telling him that she won't let him harm anyone or anything in the hotel. Charlie quickly gets behind Vaggie, as she protectively stands in front of Alastor with a weapon.

Chaggie Pilot Final

However, since Vaggie is so supportive and caring of Charlie, she can't help but be suspicious of Alastor and his true intentions in approaching the Hazbin Hotel, so she tells Charlie that she should be careful when making deals with him. Charlie assures her girlfriend that she's fine and that she can take care of herself, which does little to calm Vaggie, but Charlie's touch is enough to soften her worrisome expression. Finally, Vaggie decides to support her girlfriend, and despite how much she distrusts Alastor, when Charlie smiles at her, excited for her project, Vaggie smiles back at her.

Hello Rosie![]

Charlie vents about her relationship with Vaggie

Charlie vents to Alastor about Vaggie keeping the truth from her

A few days have passed and Charlie and Vaggie still seem conflicted after paradise. Vaggie expresses that it hurts her to know that Charlie has to prepare some things alone in their room. Meanwhile Charlie and Alastor are making a pact, the roof turns green by the link and Vaggie immediately heads to their room. Vaggie looks knowing that Charlie actually made a pact with Alastor, to which Alastor remarks that Charlie still owns her soul. Charlie informs her that she now knows that angels can be killed and she blames Vaggie for not telling her about being an exorcist when Vaggie remarks that she didn’t know it was possible to kill an angel. This states that she doesn't think she really trusts her anymore. She asks Vaggie to go to Carmilla's house to teach them how to fight the angels. During Charlie and Alastor's walk to see Rosie, Charlie spews out everything she feels towards Vaggie and her confusion at having told her everything and she hasn't told him anything about her Exorcist identity. Charlie expresses her frustration and betrayal and explains she’s shared everything with Vaggie for years. As Vaggie and Carmilla train at her house, Carmilla will point out to her in the song "Out for love", that she must fight for love in reference to Charlie. At the end of the music, Vaggie gets her angel wings back. Charlie for her part is too distracted by the anger she feels because she and Vaggie share everything to focus on convincing Rosie’s cannibals to fight with her.

She decides to confide in Rosie, who listens and asks her a certain question, “Do you love this girl?", where Charlie answers yes. “And have you ever doubted the love she has for you?" Charlie only shakes her head in sign of no. Rosie then explains to her that she thinks that her girlfriend is looking for redemption too and that she is ashamed of her past acts. Charlie then says everything she likes about Vaggie and that she does for her, which relieved her, understanding that we must prevent this conflict because it is in the past.

Behind the Scenes[]

Vivienne Medrano (also known as Vivziepop), the creator of the Hazbin Hotel series, has confirmed that Charlie and Vaggie are indeed a canon couple.[1]

Vivziepop said that Charlie and Vaggie have known each other for "a very long time".[2] When asked who she thinks fell for the other first (Charlie or Vaggie), Vivziepop stated that she thinks they were really good friends for a while, and it was "kind of a natural progression for them", so she doesn't really know who was in love first, thinking it was a more mutual feeling that developed between them. She also thinks that their becoming a couple happened a fairly long time previous to the events of the pilot, and even before some events that she has planned to occur before the pilot.[3]

When asked what kind of things Charlie and Vaggie were doing before opening the hotel, Vivziepop declined to answer, mentioning she would actually love to explore this within the official comics.[4] The author has also compared Charlie and Vaggie's relationship to that of Jack Skellington and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas.[5]

In 2019, someone wrote a long post about why they thought Charlie and Vaggie's relationship wasn't a romantic one, how it didn't make sense to them and how it was "forced LBGT+ representation." So the author was quick to answer them, by writing a very detailed response, rebutting each one of this person's claims about Vaggie and Charlie's relationship.[6]

“I wanted Charlie and Vaggie to have a solid and connected partnership set in stone from the word go, not something that would be lead up too over the story. The narrative planned for these characters challenges them as people, challenges their relationships but as life does with anyone. I really just wanted to depict a pre-established relationship, I’d like to see more of those, and they give a different kind of dynamic from a writing perspective! [...] Instead of making their story all about falling in love when that really isn’t what their arcs were meant to be, I said “ya know what, I think they are already in love” and moved on with the story. I hope their chemistry will become more clear the more of the story we get to show. But their relationship doesn’t define them, which is why we didn’t want to bother with a love-interest storyline. They are simply already partners, and best friends. <3”
— Hazbin Hotel's author, Vivziepop.

Fanon[]

Chaggie is one of the most popular ships within the Hazbin Hotel fandom. Since they're officially dating in the series from the beginning, people have started shipping them as soon as the both of them appeared, together, in the series. Many fans of ship love the dynamics the creator of the series created for the both of them, like Vaggie being a supportive girlfriend and Charlie showing how much she loves Vaggie each chance she gets. Also, the ship is loved for how the two characters act like an old married couple, knowing what each other think before they say out loud, or understanding each other's feelings.

Chaggie is often shipped alongside Huskerdust and is rivaled by Charlastor. Despite Chaggie's popularity, there has been a lot of criticism surfacing about their relationship, mainly complaints from fans claiming that Vaggie's character was too rushed and focused on her relationship with Charlie. Nevertheless, Chaggie is beloved by many shippers for their fond moments and comedic yet romantically enthralling dynamic.

On AO3, Chaggie is the most written ship for both Charlie and Vaggie. It is also the most written ship in the Hazbin Hotel (Web Series) tag. There are currently 6300+ written works.
