Chans is the non-binary ship between Chara and Sans from the Undertale fandom.

Canon

Backstory

Chara and Sans do not meet directly in canon. Chara died before the events of the game began, and they were the first human to fall in the Underground. The royal family sheltered them, giving them everything they needed. Asriel had deep respect for his adopted sibling. However, Chara was driven by determination to free the monsters and break the barrier. They poison themselves and ask Asriel to take their body to the surface and absorb their soul. Chara tries to control their brother's body in order to kill the Humans and steal their souls to open the barrier, but Asriel resists this, not wanting to cause harm. As a result, they were killed.

Sans is the skeleton and brother of Papyrus. Very little is known about their past, as according to a vendor in Snowdin, they simply showed up one day in Snowdin and that was that. Apparently, Sans is aware of the resets. He also has other unusual abilities, such as teleportation. In everyday life, he is lazy and sells hot dogs.

Sans, like other monsters, has probably heard the story about Chara and Asriel, so he is aware of their existence.

True Pacifist Route

Flowey captures Frisk's friends, including Sans, believing that Frisk is Chara. He absorbs their souls and takes on his Asriel form. During the battle, he talks to Frisk, believing them to be Chara, and has who he assumes to be Chara fight the Lost SOULs he absorbed, including Sans.

Genocide Route

It is not confirmed for certain how much influence Chara had on these events, however, it is on this route that they and Sans partially overlap. Frisk fights Sans almost at the end of the route and still defeats him. Chara appears after the murder of Asgore and Flowey, suggesting that Frisk erase this world, thereby eliminating any chance for everyone, including Sans, to live or come back to life. If Frisk tries to return, Chara will offer a deal. Frisk must give them his soul and if they do this, Chara will return everyone, including Sans. They kept their word by restarting the timeline.

Fanon

Chans is a fairly popular couple in the fandom. The fandom usually portrays the two through the genocide route, depicting Chara to be possessing Frisk's body fighting Sans in the Judgment Hall. With Chara possessing Frisk being a popular interpretation, some believe that Chara dealt the finishing blow to Sans since it happens with no player input. When going with the popular theory that Chara is the narrator, then they have more indirect interactions during the game: Chara commented on Sans's stats as being quite low, calling him the weakest opponent. The narrator also states that Sans can't dodge forever and encourages Frisk to continue attacking. On AO3, there are currently 230+ written works.
