The two officially meet in episode three, as that is when all of the contestants had been added to the show. Their first major interaction is after it is announced that teams will be formed, in which Charlotte tries to get Circle to join her team. He initially says no because of him not wanting to do another competition. However, she is able to convince him to join anyway after explaining that the show's prize is a wish for anything.
The screen cuts away from them for a moment, but we cut back to them after an (in-universe) 10-minute jump in time where the duo are talking to each other, even though the conversation seems to be one-sided as Charlotte is very confused. When two others ask to join their team, Charlotte is actually quite reluctant to let them in, an interesting contrast to earlier.During the challenge, after Airy announces that two teams have already done it, Charlotte and Circle are the two that announce that yes, they've done the challenge.
Episode five gives us slightly more interaction, as it is the Charlotte-focused episode. For a majority of it, Circle (along with the duo's other two teammates) is asking Charlotte about what her pre-plane life was. She eventually ends up caving in and explaining things, although it is slightly fabricated to make her look better.
Besides this, there is a lack of interaction between the two of them as the show slowly focuses away from The Plane, Charlotte slowly isolates herself from everyone else and Circle is eliminated offscreen.

Charcoal is definitely a rarepair, even by HfjONE standards. While the two of them are on the same team, their team is not the focus team. They also joined the competition at different times and originate from vastly different worlds. However, this has not stopped fans from doing so. People like the ship because of the interactions they did have along with the potential that their friendship could have had if it had been explored more.
Fanworks that focus on the duo, whether platonically or romantically, typically have one of them end up in the other's world--often with Circle going to Charlotte's world, but the inverse is occasionally discussed.
The ship is commonly supported by Whippyseat shippers as a partnership of sort. This would mean that the entire team would be paired off. However, a common rival ship for Charcoal is Charmelia, particularly from people who headcanon Charlotte as a lesbian. Candymold is also a semi-common rival ship. However, sometimes people will combine Charcoal with either Charmelia, Candymold or even both to create a polyship.
The fandom seems to prefer them as friends rather than romantic partners, given that there are currently only 2 romantic works written with them on AO3, but 7 with the platonic tag.
