As children of the business partners who created Freddy's, Vanessa and Charlotte spent a lot of time in the original pizzeria. Henry mentions that the two were best friends. Charlotte felt that she didn't fit in with the kids, and was neglected by the adults around her, so she spent her time waiting for the Marionette, who Charlotte felt truly understood her. One day, Vanessa encourages Charlotte to join the other kids and assures her that she can still watch the Marionette even if she leaves her spot. Charlotte relents and joins the birthday party, but she notices the Yellow Rabbit luring a child to the back. With no adults willing to listen to her, Charlotte goes to save the boy on her own. Vanessa grabs her arm and attempts to stop Charlotte from going further, but Charlotte wordlessly continues on. The incident results in Charlotte's murder, and the guilt haunts Vanessa in the form of nightmares for years.
After the closing of the original pizzeria, Vanessa visits Charlotte's ghost and gives her a music box, which calms Charlotte's spirit into a slumber. However, years later, Michael arranges to have the music box broken, awakening the Marionette, who wishes to take revenge on all adults. Vanessa visits the original pizzeria out of concern for Abby, but the Marionette captures her. The Marionette tells Vanessa she doesn't hate her, but Vanessa needs to stay out of her way. She hangs Vanessa from the neck and forces her to give Abby the code to set the Toy animatronics free.
Vanessa and Mike work together to deactivate the Toy animatronics, but Toy Chica remained active at Abby's house, hiding the Marionette within her. By the time Vanessa arrives to the house, the Marionette had possessed Abby, who chases her around the house. The Marionette overpowers Vanessa and prepares to kill her, saying she wants to know what goes on inside her head, but Mike arrives with Henry's music box to put the Marionette back to sleep. At the end of the film, Mike tells Vanessa to stay away from him and Abby, no longer trusting her after the secrets she kept. As Vanessa cries, the Marionette sneaks up behind her and possesses Vanessa.

Charlessa is a rarepair that first started with shipping Vanessa A. from the games with Charlotte, based on her portrayal in The Silver Eyes trilogy. The earliest mention of the ship can be found from November 2023 with the Vanessa A./Charlotte Emily tag on AO3, though the main creator of Charlessa is @j3se3.
After the release of the first movie, many fans were interested about Vanessa's potential relationship with Charlotte due to Vanessa's role in covering up her father's crimes.
